Reading this thread, I start to have doubts whether we can give the world to your hands in the future as two global superpowers. Maybe it is better that "the west" is in charge few centuries more ;)
As a matter of fact I support u. If u cannot beat it join it ~ let China join the west !😁

The China and the india cannot be the leaders in the foreseeable future. The power of the China and the India are both from the huge populaition. In other aspects, such as the science, the education, etc, are still much worse than the western world and the Japan. The USA will still be the leader of the world at least before the 2050.

Just interested, how do you feel about the west? As I have understood India has doubts because of colonial past and Russia because of post cold war anxieties. How do you Chinese feel? Can you welcome us with open arms? ( coming from small country I really do not feel like "the west" but anyhow I am interested about your view of the world.) also @amoy, sir

My world view is simple, @jouni as expressed repeatedly ~

There has always been competition ongoing from time immemorial, btwn tribes, countries, cultures, religions... so on and so forth. However Chinese shall never be tempted into any confrontation with the west, or the Islam, or any others. There's no dichotomy such as either black or white, either friend or enemy. Instead China shall be open to anything advanced and change with times ~ ~ one day to be on par with human development level of the west , plus democracy, living standard etc. etc. (join the "west" in short).

That being said there will never be two leaves entirely identical, or "blind worshipping" of the east or the west.

China had a cold war past too ~ the Korean war , Vietnam War. Meanwhile China also had hot clashes with Soviet Union. But Chinese are a pragmatic lot ~ that's why our civilization has outlived most of other ancient peers ☺

The Chinese also have the doubts about the west because China had been aggressed by nearly all the west countrys and the Japan from 1840 to 1949.The Chinese young men are very interseted in the western culture such as the Hollywood moives and the computer games, millions of Chinses young men learn or work in the west. They admire the USA,want to live in the USA,but they also want to have a war with the USA and the Japan about the dispute of Diaoyu Island. It is very contradictory. In general,Chinese people are friendly to the west, but show more aggressive to their neighborhood. The HongKanger ,Taiwaner and Japanese,Koeran.

I think it's true universally ~ it's harder to get well along with immediate neighbors due to geopolitical imbroglios. but a lot easier to cozy up with those far away.

one of reasons that China went sour with Soviet Union was it backed India in the Sino India rivalry under Khruschev. it was actually a blessing in disguise to break up with these two neighbors.

Chinese certainly don't buy in America's pivot to Asia meddling with dispats over China Seas. but none believe either side would be headlong enough to instigate a direct clash.

China is fundamentally okay with the West. even CCP's orthodox ideology Marxism is from the West :D ~ Karl Marx, Engels, Berstein ~ capitalism, socialism ~ all imported from the West.

and talk to any Chinese anywhere ~ honestly most of them (esp. the young) would nod to Christianity but very likely have no idea or #%^*abt Hinduism or Islam

seeing is believing.

Chinese has the same doubt even today, but lot slighter. Thanks to Korean war, Chinese gets more confidence in dealing with the west (forgive me using this again).

What do you think we are doing now? We are welcome the west with open arms. The question is whether the west can welcome us with open arms.

That is rich.

Come again, please.

Forget Japan. Vietnam loves you. Philippines loves you. All around the South China Sea loves you.

India loves you. Myanmar loves you even though you are causing rebellion with the Han Burmese in the area next to China.

We all love you and your hegemonic adventures.

Such fun!

That is all you can think about = Money.

Trade.

Trade vs Liberty?

Think again.

Remember Opium in China"

Trade.

And what happened to China?

Enjoy but at the risk of becoming a total disaster.

Yes, where is Sikkim?

PRC tryst with the democracy continues:

Hong Kong opens new chapter in pro-democracy fight - tidewaterreview.com

The rules would allow a 1,200-member committee to vet candidates, first choosing five to 10 nominees, then whittling that down to two or three to appear on a ballot for the territory's 5 million eligible voters to decide.

The procedure would mark the first time Hong Kongers could cast ballots directly for the top official in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.

Under current rules, the chief executive is chosen directly by a 1,200-member committee.

Yet as soon as Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, the territory's No. 2 official, had finished delivering the proposal to the territory's Legislative Council, Alan Leong, the legislator who convenes the so-called pan-democratic camp, took to the floor to decry it.

"This proposal will continue to allow a clique to control the elections and condemn the public to acting as voting automatons," he declared.
Hong Kong politics: X marks the spot | The Economist

For the first time, Hong Kong residents will all be allowed to cast a vote for their leader. But the only candidates will be ones approved by a committee stacked with the party's supporters.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/23/w...ctions-offering-little-to-democrats.html?_r=0

(good article with a simple diagram to explain)

As announced last year, the government's proposed rules would give residents a direct vote for chief executive for the first time, starting in 2017, but only from among two or three candidates approved by a nomination panel dominated by people beholden to Beijing. That would effectively exclude candidates unacceptable to the Chinese government.
I think it is a good first step and is courageous of PRC to do such a measure and not try and delay but i suppose they are bound by a international treaty ... popular vote on such a large scale and important financial center with proper transparency and rules would be the first time with PRC approval even though it is happening in Taiwan. Having a choice for the people to vote is good and it is being offered. But there might be other groups wanting to make and take different positions. It might be better to take whats on the plate and one can always complain later if needed. Further the parliament still needs to be opened up to universal suffrage and the nomination committee might need to be analysed more because with the two step approach that opens up to exuberance. but it is good PRC can feel the voice of hong kong ... and it has shown in the past it would change and adjust because of that. but was this what Deng Xiao Ping had in mind when he proposed One Country Two Systems ... good stuff
