The Mutual Defense Treaty Between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States of America was signed on August 30, 1951 in Washington, D.C. between representatives of the Philippines and the United States. The overall accord contained eight articles and dictated that both nations would support each other if either the Philippines or the United States were to be attacked by an external party.

China is a rogue nation. It has made its citizens slave and now they want to control more and more geographical location to exploit it to become more mightier. So tribunal has only said what was known to everybody and which is a fact. However, the downfall of china has started. It is very much necessary that whole world should boycott china and chinese goods. Their export dependent economy will start shrinking. It is very much necessary to make china shrink economically because they are converting their economic power into military power rapidly. The best way for India is to emerge as the option of china so that world may get an alternate and they may dump china.China LOSES Claim On South China Sea At UN-Backed Tribunal, threatens WAR
China has 'no historic rights' in South China Sea, rules tribunal
BEIJING — An international tribunal in The Hague delivered a sweeping rebuke on Tuesday of China’s behavior in the South China Sea, including its construction of artificial islands, and found that its expansive claim to sovereignty over the waters had no legal basis.
The landmark case, brought by the Philippines, was seen as an important crossroads in China’s rise as a global power and in its rivalry with the United States, and it could force Beijing to reconsider its assertive tactics in the region or risk being labeled an international outlaw. It was the first time the Chinese government had been summoned before the international justice system.
In its most significant finding, the tribunal rejected China’s argument that it enjoys historic rights over most of the South China Sea. That could give the governments of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam more leverage in their own maritime disputes with Beijing.
The tribunal also said that China had violated international law by causing “irreparable harm” to the marine environment, endangering Philippine ships and interfering with Philippine fishing and oil exploration.
“It’s an overwhelming victory. We won on every significant point,” said the Philippines’ chief counsel in the case, Paul S. Reichler.
But while the decision is legally binding, there is no mechanism for enforcing it, and China, which refused to participate in the tribunal’s proceedings, reiterated on Tuesday that it would not abide by it.
Speaking at a meeting with European leaders, President Xi Jinping was defiant, reasserting China’s claim to sovereignty over the South China Sea “since ancient times,” the state-run People’s Daily reported. His remarks echoed a statement from the Foreign Ministry. The tribunal’s decision “is invalid and has no binding force,” the ministry said. “China does not accept or recognize it.”

Nah Never shall one have too much faith in that "mutual defence" treaty. Time and again proxies have to prove its own worth to patrons otherwise can't escape the fate of being dumped not the vice versa. The most immediate consequence of this ruling is on the applicability of the US-Phil Mutual Defense Treaty. Since the UNLCOS Tribunal ruled that none of the artificial islands or islands occupied by China in the disputed area are capable of generating its own EEZ, this area is within the Philippines' EEZ. Now, if China attacks any Philippine military asset within the EEZ of the Philippines then it will automatically trigger the US-Phil MDT because legally the Philippines has every right to be there and the Philippines will not be provoking China (since that area is within its EEZ).
Things are becoming very interesting indeed in the South Philippine Sea. Overall, tiny Philippines has dealt a massive Davidisque blow to Goliath China. Hurrah!
BTW, both Spratlys and Scarborough Shoals are within range of HIMARS from mainland (and the US has already prepositioned HIMARS on the Philippines with the Philippines intending to buy its own HIMARS). The Philippines is the battle group in the South China Sea against China.

Chinese paper shows India among nations supporting it on South China Sea
There might be some truth to that. We don't know what agreement Doval and Parrikar made during their respective visits but I remember that China had said in official state media last week that India is trying to milk both China and US, or something to that effect. So, it seems India has made some formal commitments to China (which only the establishment knows about) maybe about not indulging in an active war against China over SCS but restricting our participation to just doing joint patrols (maybe in exchange for some concessions relating to Pakistan). So China keeps reminding us through these indirect taunts to make our establishment come clean on our official stance.LOL, what the hell they are trying to prove?:biggrin2: @Akask kumar @LETHALFORCE @sayareakd @Navnit Kundu @abingdonboy

Well, it should be clear to you Chinese now that it is the US that has been the driving force behind the decision to arbitrate on UNCLOS. Note that when China forcibly took Scarborough Shoal in 2012 the Phils turned to the US. But the latter could not forcibly intervene without a clear legal basis that that area is indeed Philippine sovereign territory. So what did the US do? Advised the Philippines to go to the Hague to seek a binding legal pronouncement that the area is indeed under Philippine sovereignty. Now that the Hague has spoken clearly in favor of the Philippines then expect a more forceful US response in that area.Nah Never shall one have too much faith in that "mutual defence" treaty. Time and again proxies have to prove its own worth to patrons otherwise can't escape the fate of being dumped not the vice versa.
Unlike Japan, there is no more "territorial dispute" to talk about in the case of the Philippines. The UNCLOS Tribunal ruling has clearly defined the full extent of Philippine sovereignty and EEZ. China's claim has been completely debunked.Just draw a parallel to the contested Diaoyu - US openly declared that the islands fell under the security treaty. Woefully what has happened when Chinese patorl waters off Diaoyu repeatedly?
US asserts that it takes no side on the territorial dispute. What it is concerned is "freedom of navigation" -- See how a mature superpower plays the game?
Well, as I said, things are about to get more exciting indeed. And cry as you like, this issue has really turned into a David versus Goliath episode. Of course in our case behind David is Iron Man...What would be cards in hand if Filipina keeps on cornering China? Possibly
aa. China starts the construction on Huangyan (Scaborough)
bb. China declares ADIZ over SCS
In that case PH govmt would become very very humiliated. The escalation would expose impotence of the treaty as well as the new administration since it could do nothing in response even with HIMARS!
David could hit Goliath only in a myth. Filipina could only raise a hue and cry to no avail. UNSC P5 are the rule setters - live with this fact!

The United States government hasn't said anything about the South China Sea opinion. They're afraid of provoking China. You shouldn't expect too much from the US government. They're not willing to fight for the South China Sea. However, China is.Well, it should be clear to you Chinese now that it is the US that has been the driving force behind the decision to arbitrate on UNCLOS. The only thing that the US and the Aquino administration did not foresee is the rise of China's Manchurian candidate Duterte. But even Duterte has now very limited space to maneuver in favor of China because of the ruling. The Philippine Constitution clearly prohibits joint-sharin of sovereignty and use of Philippine territories, including EEZ. So Duterte has very real danger of impeachment if he legitimizes China's territorial grab. Moreover, the Philippine publis is overwhelmingly in support of Aquino's handling of this crisis.
Unlike Japan, there is no more "territorial dispute" to talk about anymore in the case of the Philippines. The UNCLOS Tribunal ruling has clearly defined the full extent of Philippine sovereignty and EEZ. China's claim has been completely debunked.
The US can openly challenge China now in the SOuth Philippine Sea in the guise of aiding the Philippines.

Why would the US government leave HIMARS in Palawan, which is the closest Philippine island to the Spratlys, and in Tarlac, close to Scarborough Shore? The US has also stationed Growlers and and rotating other assets in Subic. Since China forcibly took Scarborough Shoal the US has been slowly building capabilities in the Philippines through a new bases agreement (which is more sweeping that the old Subic base agreement since the US military can now operate in any of the Philippine military facilities it deem fit). The United States government hasn't said anything about the South China Sea opinion. They're afraid of provoking China. You shouldn't expect too much from the US government. They're not willing to fight for the South China Sea. However, China is.
You know that nothing has changed, right? Why would the US government leave HIMARS in Palawan, which is the closest Philippine island to the Spratlys, and in Tarlac, close to Scarborough Shore? The only depressing weak link here now is on the Philippine side, in the form of China's idiot in Malacanang, Duterte.
Oh please. A tectonic plate has just shifted and swallowed whole China's nine-dash line fantasy in the entire West Philippine Sea a.k.a. South China Sea. Everybody is celebrating this momentous Hague ruling from Tokyo to Jakarta (most are celebrating silently like the Philippines to avoid appearing to taunt China which is the whole neighborhood's biggest trading partner). You know that nothing has changed, right?
You Filipinos still can't fish in the South China Sea.
The PLA Navy is out there.

China's UNSC permanent veto means the UNCLOS opinion will never become international law. It's worth nothing.
The PLA Navy is still out there controlling the waters of the South China Sea.
You Filipinos still can't fish inside the nine-dash-lines.
