On Friday, the Adastra Superyacht was launched in China's Pearl River. The $15 million, 140-foot vessel floated majestically above the river, looking more like a spacecraft than an actual vehicle.

Five years ago, Hong Kong shipping industry billionaire Anto Marden commissioned Chinese boat engineer, John Shuttleworth Yacht Desgins, to craft a yacht unlike anything the world has ever seen, says Yahoo.com. Now Marden's dream has come to fruition.

The Adastra features a luxurious interior, complete with dinning area, sleeping spaces, and a full bathroom and shower. The ship can comfortably house nine guests in two guest cabins and a large master cabin. There are also crew quarters for up to six crew members. Even when there's no crew to steer the ship, the yacht can be controlled with an iPad from a range of 164ft. The Adastra is said to be used by the owners to travel between two Indonesian islands that they allegedly own.

Don't get too excited about this recent innovation in boating. Even if you can afford the $15 million yacht, there's no way you can get one. There's only of these space age vessels in the world and it's already spoken for.

Futuristic trimaran Adastra launches in China

After a four year build at McConaghy Boats in Zhu Hai, China, the fuel efficient 42.5m trimaran Adastra has been launched into the Pearl River.Designed by UK-based John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs, Adastra is the second largest trimaran yacht ever built (the 61m White Rabbit being the biggest), and is the fourth largest powered multihull in the world.

With full ocean-going performance, the yacht was originally conceived as a stripped-out cruising yacht for Hong Kong owners Anto and Elaine Marden, who wanted to undertake long-range cruising, but once the requirement for luxury accommodation was added into the equation the weight went up and the design changed to compensate.

'It takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted before,' says Shuttleworth. 'The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has taken us to further research and to develop new thinking on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft.'

McConaghy Boats was chosen for the construction of this revolutionary design because of its proximity to Hong Kong and its experience with advanced composite construction. The Chinese yard is a subsidiary of the Australian builder – renowned for its race-winning sailing yachts – and the Zhu Hai facility specialises in high quality carbon structures.

The hull of Adastra is constructed from a glass and Kevlar sandwich using Corecell foam with the superstructure moulded from a carbon fibre laminate on a Nomex honeycomb core. All the hull structures were resin infused to ensure high quality and reduce weight and virtually every part of the yacht is custom built. McConaghy has used its expertise in carbon laminates to create lightweight hatches, portholes and hinges and rather than using ceramics for the toilet bowls, these have also been moulded in carbon.

61m White Rabbit being the biggest trimaran design yacht..

Its a medium size yacht by yacht size category, that means at 42m Adastra is a small class yacht..
