China has 1.48 mn troops minus missile forces: white paper | idrw.org

Disclosing its strength for the first time, China's People's Liberation Army (PLA), the world's largest active military, today said its troops totalled 1.483 million, excluding its missiles division.

An annual white paper revealing the details of the 2.3 million strong PLA's actual number of troops in the army, navy and air force, omitted the number of personnel in its Strategic Command Division, the Second Artillery Force, which handled its nuclear and ballistic missiles.

Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujin who released the white paper on Diversified Employment of China's Armed Forces at a media briefing skirted the question about the PLA's strength estimated to be about 2.3 million.

Defence analysts who scrutinised the document said here that 2.3 million is stated to be a realistic figure as the paper did not include the numbers of PLA's Second Artillery, the main missile unit of the Chinese military that comprises of large personnel and mobile missile units.

"These are highlights. The paper not only released certain figures of the strength of the mobile units of the army, navy and air force, it also provided in detail, policy and principles adhered to diversified employment which is not covered by previous white papers. "This will help media to understand armed forces," Yang said.

According to the white paper, the eighth of its kind issued by the Chinese government since 1998, China now has about 8.5 lakh army servicemen in 18 combined corps and additional independent combined operational divisions (brigades).

The combined corps are composed of divisions and brigades which operate under seven Military Area Commands (MACs). The PLA Navy has a total strength of 2.35 lakh and commands three fleets the Beihai Fleet, the Donghai Fleet and the Nanhai Fleet

The PLA Air Force has about 3.98 lakh officers and men and an air command in each of the seven military area commands of Shenyang, Beijing, Lanzhou, Jinan, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Chengdu. In addition, it boasts of one airborne corps.

The PLA Second Artillery Force, the country's core force for strategic deterrence, is composed of nuclear and conventional missile forces and operational support units, the paper said, without disclosing the numbers.

It is equipped with a series of 'Dong Feng' ballistic missiles and 'Chang Jian' cruise missiles, both long, medium and short range. It also has under its command missile bases, training bases, specialised support units, academies and research institutions.

According to the document, China will build a strong national defence and powerful armed forces which are "commensurate with China's international standing and meet the needs of its security and development interests".

The paper also said China still faces multiple and complicated security threats and challenges. Chinese armed forces are employed to safeguard borders, coastal and territorial air security and they will strengthen combat-readiness and combat-oriented exercises and drills, it said.

And they will readily respond to and resolutely deter any provocative action which undermines China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, it said.

So 800,000 are in the Strategic missile forces? That seems a bit much.

not that much, 700,000 is cyber solders, 50 cents, doctors , nurses, singers.
our first lady is an example.
1.48m troops is still not enough, we have so many enemies,
only a few brigades to count India although India is pretty touch opponent, situation is not good at all.

China's military white paper plays down dispute with India - The Times of India

BEIJING: China's military has issued a white paper blaming the US for causing tension in the Asia-Pacific region and naming Japan as a troublemaker. But the paper plays down the country's troubled relationship with India over boundary claims. It also reveals details of China's enormous military structure, with some of the information being released for the first time.

The report issued by the People's Liberation Army on Tuesday complained about "neighbouring countries" complicating and exacerbating tensions. Especially targeted were China's sea neighbours, including Japan, which the report accused of "making trouble over the Diaoyu islands".

"China still faces multiple and complicated security threats and challenges," said the white paper on 'The Diversified Employment of China's Armed Forces'.

There is little discussion about India in the paper and even joint exercises conducted between the military of the two countries have not been discussed in any detail. Military exchanges with China's neighbours such as Vietnam, South Korea and Pakistan are specifically mentioned.

"Some countries are strengthening their Asia-Pacific military alliances, expanding military presence in the region, and frequently making the situation there tenser," the paper said without taking any names. The obvious reference was to the expansion of US presence in the seas near South Korea, Vietnam and Japan.

Replying to a question about the US presence in Asia-Pacific, defence ministry spokesman Colonel Yang Yujun told a press conference: "Certain efforts made to highlight a military agenda and enhance military deployment and also strengthen military alliances in the region are not in line with the common interest." Such actions "were not conducive to upholding peace and stability in the region", he said.

About China's military structure, the paper said the army had 850,000 officers, while the navy and air force had a strength of 235,000 and 398,000. The air force has 398,000 officers and an air command in seven military areas, while the navy commands three fleets: the Beihai, the Donghai and the Nanhai. China's defence budget rose by 11.2% in 2012, exceeding $100 billion.

The white paper mentioned the role of China's second artillery force, which contains its nuclear and conventional missile forces. The force is crucial to China's "strategic deterrence" and is "primarily responsible for deterring other countries from using nuclear weapons against China, and carrying out nuclear counterattacks and precision strikes with conventional missiles", the paper said.

no....
the border guard force is included in the rest of 2.3 million total PLA number(2.3-1.48=0.82 million)
the Chinese People's Armed Police Force(CPAF, not plaap) is not in the PLA formation and has a total strength of 0.66 million person(figure of 2006).

so PLA has 2.3 million person, including:
1.Army( feild forces only): 0.85 million
2.Air force: 0.398 million
3.Navy: 0.235 million
----------the total number of above parts is 1.48 million in total
4.Second Artillery Force
5.border guard force
6.Headquarters and Administration
7.Local force
8.Special force
9.Military academies
10. logistics unit
11.
12.

Let the economic development slow down a bit and they would need all the soldiers to control their own people.

Indeed, like in the world largest democratic country no HM jawans are needed to control their own people, but they could not control that much anyways or could they? after they are humanely assisted to repose, mines and bombs are planted in their corpses to apply a final embalm of democracy. How touching...
May India's economy recover in full speed, may five years girls in Delhi all chant long live Baharat Mata.

Aww, Whine a bit more and you would be as good as a Pakistani. However it's a real possibility that the Chinese government would have to use the army to kill it's own people as they did in the past. A little bit of economical slowdown and all the facade of order would go to piece. There might be armies of thug torturing people who speak against the government, like the armies of Mao's baboons hunting 'rightists', waving worthless little red book like brain dead Jihadis and chanting slogans of the greatness of the fat toad of a chairman.

So, on papers we have more troops than the chinese, but then why they say that china has the world's largest army?

IA = 2 million troops

PLA = 1.48 million troops

What is the fact behind these numbers and who has the largest army?
