it is one of the few lines that are profitable. in remote western regions, the lines are not so profitable. they only have strategic significance. to make the frontier regions closer to the core. Xizang(Tibet) is the only province that has no high speed rail. it's technologically challenging and unsafe (4KM high plateau and extreme temperature and elevation variation)and economically infeasible (only 3 million residents) to build a high speed speed rail. the aim is to reach every provincial capital within one day(except Lhasa) not affected by weather.
I know, Lanxin and Zhengzhou-xi'an are nightmares for MoR.

CAN VIETNAM REPLACE CHINA AS A GLOBAL MANUFACTURING HUB?

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/29/tra...lace-china-as-a-global-manufacturing-hub.html

KEY POINTS

Vietnam has been a favored destination for shifts in trade flows and supply chains due to the U.S.-China trade war.

Some analysts noted that certain bottlenecks have emerged in Vietnam, which would limit how much the country could accommodate those additional flows.

In fact, no single country “can really absorb all of that production” looking to shift out of China as a result of the trade war, said Cedric Chehab, global head of country risk at Fitch Solutions.

---------
“It’s very clear that where China has lost market share in terms of U.S. exports, Vietnam has picked up the slack,” Euben Paracuelles, a senior economist from Japanese bank Nomura, told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” earlier this month.

Some trade experts suggested that Chinese goods were moved to Vietnam, repackaged as Vietnamese products and shipped to the U.S. to avoid elevated tariffs.

TikTok Under U.S. National Security Investigation, According To Reports

U.S. authorities have opened a national security investigation into TikTok and its owner, Chinese tech company ByteDance, Reuters reported Friday, another sign that lawmakers continue to worry about China’s influence on the lives of U.S. citizens as the video app surges in popularity among teens.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachel...estigation-according-to-reports/#2ce9737c62b1

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is reviewing ByteDance’s acquisition of Musical.ly, a U.S.-based app that was eventually rebranded into TikTok under ByteDance, Reuters reported.

The investigation comes after senators from both parties raised concerns about TikTok in a letter last week to the acting director of national intelligence.

The senators said they are worried Chinese law could force TikTok to hand over data on U.S. users to the Chinese government and that the company may censor videos that criticize China.

In a blog post last week, TikTok said that it stores its data on U.S. servers with backups in Singapore, and therefore that data isn’t subject to Chinese law. It also said that it doesn’t remove content based on sensitivities related to China.

A BuzzFeed News investigation found no evidence TikTok censored or removed videos in support of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, a movement that directly opposes the Chinese government and its ruling Communist party.

China issues its first euro-denominated sovereign bonds in 15 years

https://www.ft.com/content/7a4fdd8a-fbb4-11e9-a354-36acbbb0d9b6

· China is poised to raise up to €4bn from the country’s first euro-denominated sovereign bond issuance in 15 years, as Beijing seeks to take advantage of record-low interest rates to diversify away from dollar debt.

The overwhelming majority of China’s foreign-currency denominated debt, across corporates, financial institutions and government agencies, is in US dollars. Dollar bonds account for $653bn, or 77 per cent of the total of $849bn in outstanding Chinese foreign-currency bonds. Euro-denominated bonds make up less than 5 per cent of the total, according to Dealogic.

All politics aside, can we get some prayers for China? The CCP is scrubbing Weibo on reports of an outbreak of Bubonic Plague.

@Haldiram check this out. Explains why India walked away from RCEP deal.
Its not just RCEP, FTA deals in general are not India's game.
Other than US,UK and UAE, India has a trade deficit with each of its trading partner.
I'd thought it would be easy for India to replace China in a few manufacturing sectors as the low cost exporter, but it seems India's having a bad time banking on its labor pool.

Don't believe these vested interest media projections. RCEP deal can still come with our clauses.

Just take a look at what the media was saying viz the most important things and how the truth turned out? The media predicted a loss for Trump and Modi, what happened eventually? The media was virtually predicting a nuclear war with N.Korea. What happened? Murica befriended Kim Jong. They were all bearish on Aramco after the drone attack, what happened? today Aramco has put out the world's largest IPO nearing approx 2 trillion USD.

Have seen these slights of hand in 2003, 2008, 2013 when they were making doomsday predictions, then the market went 5X from there. Media walon ko kuch pata nahi hota, kuch bhi bakte rehte hai. They just want to keep the audience engaged.

RCEP is in the pipeline, pakka. All the long term policy documents from the Indian gormint bear mention of this Asian grouping (without mentioning the acronym), because the documents were written through the decade for the next 50 years. We did the same with LSA, CISMOA. We walked out, then got them to change the terms, then LSA became LEMOA and CISMOA became COMCASA and now we're in.
