CURFEW IN WESTERN SICHUAN: 11 TIBETANS DIE IN POLICE FIRING

B.RAMAN

A curfew has been imposed and a shoot-at-sight order has been given to the police following two days of violent protests by Tibetans in certain parts of Western Sichuan, which has seen 14 instances of self-immolation since March last year following the arrests of a large number of Tibetan monks of the well-known Kirti monastery and their forcible detention in a military camp.

2.The protests by the monks of the Kirti monastery started in support of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and in opposition to the suppression of the Tibetans by the Chinese authorities. It has since spread to the general population of the area in protest against the arrest and prosecution of many bystanders, who were present at the scenes of self-immolation, on charges of abetment of suicide.

3. The anger has been aggravated by the refusal of the Chinese authorities to hand over the bodies of those who committed self-immolation to their relatives for funeral ceremonies in accordance with Tibetan traditions and by the disposal of the dead bodies by the police without allowing the relatives to be present.

4.The protests, which were peaceful till December, have since assumed a violent form with at least two attacks on police stations where, the local residents suspected, the dead bodies were kept.

5.An outbreak of widespread violence involving about 6000 Tibetans was reported on January 23,2012, from the Draggo county in Sichuan province's Kardze prefecture . According to reliable sources, the local police opened fire on the protesting Tibetans, resulting in the death of five Tibetans and injuries to 40 others.

6. The news of deaths in the police firings led to the spread of the violence the next day to the Serthar (in Chinese Seda) area of the same prefecture. The police again opened fire resulting in six more deaths.

7. Reports of demonstrations have also been received from the Ngaba (in Chinese, Aba prefecture) area where several thousand Tibetans have reportedly blocked a local road. The police forcibly dispersed Tibetans who tried to hold a special prayer meeting in the Kirti monastery in homage to those who died in the police firings.

8.It is reliably learnt that the latest violence started when the police beat up and arrested Tibetans in the affected areas who refused to celebrate the Chinese New Year's Day in protest against the Chinese suppression. They also observed the Chinese New Year's Day as a day of mourning in memory of all those who have committed self-immolation since March last.

9. The US , which will be hosting China's Vice President Xi Jinping at the White House next month, has expressed grave concern over the latest violence, and called upon Beijing to review its "counterproductive policies" in Tibetan areas that have created tensions and threatened Tibetans' religious, cultural and linguistic identity.

10.A statement issued by Maria Otero, US Special Co-ordinator for Tibetan issues, said: "China should resume talks with the Dalai Lama or his representatives over Tibetan grievances. We urge Chinese security forces to exercise restraint, and we renew our call to allow access to Tibetan areas of China for journalists, diplomats and other observers." (25-1-12)

The Tibetans are getting very restive of late.

China will have to redraw its policies for Tibet.

If Tibetans don't like their lives right now, they can burn themselves (or win the fight with Hans).

If the Tibetans don't like their lives and prefer to burn themselves, are you suggesting that the Chinese Govt is not concerned about the why the Tibetans are doing so and is the Chinese Govt not going to address the issue?

Until there is a Democratic govt in china , there won't be any change in "China's Tibet policy "

Those commies don't care about Tibetans , off late they are ready to settle with full administrative autonomy

They like their lives but do not like living under 'BARBARIANS' regime. Just the way Chinese didd not like living under Japan's rule pre second world war. Try to think of some sensible thing before posting. You tend to be very rude in your posts.

Nanking is a black period of Chinese history.

The Chinese were brutalised in their own homeland, while Japan thinks otherwise!

They feel it was well deserved!

Some dismiss that history as a Western backed Chinese propaganda!

Opinions!

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), also known as the Tokyo Trials, the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, or simply the Tribunal, was convened on April 29, 1946, had Judges appointed by Gen MacArthur and so many feel that there was an axe to grind to demonise the Japanese, since they had lost the war and had no option to accept the verdict of the victor!

There must been something wrong with CCP's ethnic / religious / education policies since 1980's. Since then many temples / mosques have been erected while science / multi ethnic unity doesn't take its due priority at school

China has concentrated on the material benefits across China without realising that some segments of the population hold religion, culture and language important for self realisation.

In fact, it is a telling tale that there has been a spate of atheist Chinese converting to Christianity!

The roots of the problem is the premium on the strategic compulsion of homogenisation rather than cherishing the given diversity or atleast providing status quo to the existing diversity. At this rate Xianjiang must be in embers if this is the case with tibet

Nice guy, I'm just curious? You put your flag as Chinese. However, you never reference any chinese source and you did not response to any Chinese language message I send you. I renew my suspicion that you are an Indian that pretending yourself as Chinese.

Power is always the main scheme, but life will be very uncomfortable if this world is only about power.

Incident of the conflict begins with groups of "protestor" attack polices who is trying to arrest a young man who is spreading pamphlet that called for independence and expel all the Han who also live in the lands for years. Well, most country do not tolerate those type of behavior. It make sense to self-defend.

If you dont know the difference between self-immolation and mass murder then you better not call other people for hypocrite. Learn about what happend at Nanjing first.

China was not the only victim of the japanese aggression during the ww2. Many countries including South-Korea still have issues with Japan.

Consider the chinese contribution during the burma compaign , it is laughable how some people try to score a cheap point. Have some decensy.

Japanese feel it was well deserved? Now you are playing your favourit game again. Put words in other peoples mouth.

Give me one source where the japanese stated that. I will like to see one japanse politician who dare to say this today.

Opinions? right. there are people still denying the existance of the Holocaust. Like you said, it is just opinions.
