The Hindu : Cities / Chennai : Chennai bank robbers killed in encounter

Five persons suspected to be involved in the armed bank robberies that recently rocked the city were killed here in a police encounter early on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off from a person, who had seen the CCTV camera grab of one of the suspects that was released on Wednesday, the police raided a Housing Board colony on Nethaji Road in Velachery around 1 a.m. on Thursday.

Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Shanmugarajeshwaran said that there was a brief exchange of fire. A 14-member police team spilt into two groups and fired through the windows of the one-bedroom apartment, he said.

The police eventually managed to break-in through the main door. Two policemen, Ravi and Christian Jayasil, were injured in the crossfire.

All the five suspects, estimated to be around 30-35 years old, were killed. They are all believed to be from Bihar. A West Bengal driving licence was recovered. The victims have been identified as Vinod Kumar, Chandri Khare, Vinay Prasad, Abhay Kumar, and Harish Kumar.

Inside their room, two bags containing wads of cash were found. The bags also contained five pistols and two revolvers, police said.

Though the men had been living in the colony for at least the last three months, neighbours said that they never noticed anything unusual. None of them were also aware of the gunfight. They all slept peacefully and woke up on Thursday morning to find their neighbourhood teeming with police personnel.

The injured police inspectors were admitted to the Royapettah Government Hospital. The victims were taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem.

Residents shocked

Residents of Tamil Nadu Housing Board colony in Velachery woke up to a shock on Thursday morning. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board Colony, located on the Adambakkam–Velachery border, was created 25 years and has nearly 1,000 plots. A bunch of tenements stand out among independent houses, constructed by the plot owners.

It was in Plot No. 335 that the encounter took place between midnight on Wednesday and 1 a.m. on Thursday. While those living in flats and independent houses very close to the scene of the encounter heard noises, some of them identifying it clearly as gunfire, some others had no clue about the encounter until early morning on Thursday.

"A team of policemen arrived at 10 p.m. immediately, the men inside the house closed the windows and switched off the light," recalled Yesodha Nagappan, living in a house opposite to the flat, in which the encounter took place.

According to her, the policemen spent nearly two hours trying to bring the men outside their flat. "We did not know what happened after that. We were instructed not to come out of our house. We were watching through the grille gate and later went inside the house," she said, adding that minutes later, they heard loud noises. Her elder daughter, a college student, said it was clear that noise was gunfire.

A policeman, whose hand was soaked in blood passed by her house. The family helped the police team by providing drinking water and also 'dupattas', shawls and towels to the policemen while taking away the bodies of the suspects. A cook, Ms. Yesodha was unable to go her employer's house on Thursday.

According to them, the young men had moved into the flat only recently. The flat owner lived in the same block on the second floor. L. Mahesh, living in flat in the same block, said around midnight he heard loud noises. Fearing that culprits were trying to break into their house, he rushed to the door and went back to bed after he found that it was safe. The noises continued for a brief while before subsiding. Working in a real estate company, Mahesh had moved into the flat with his parents only four months ago.

M. Gnanamurthy, living in an independent house on A.L. Muthali Second Street – the link to the TNHB flats from Nethaji Road, said he returned from work on his Honda Activa scooter around 11.30 p.m. As police had cordoned off the entire area, he took another route to reach his house. An electrician, he said he went to bed immediately after reaching home, only to be woken up by loud noises.

Another resident living near the flat of the young men, said they did just not have any idea about the incident till they were woken up by the hustle caused by policemen and media early on Thursday. A staff of a Children's Centre of Integrated Child Development Services in Guindy, she said the family did not hear any sound in the night. As news about the incident flashed on television channels, residents from different areas of Adambakkam and Velachery visited TNHB Colony.

Hats off to the Tamil Nadu police.... Go police Go......:hail::hail:

They where checking all the cars at night that day.

I told them thanks for doing a good job! :D

But some how i feel something is fishy, did they recover all the money or is this simply an encounter to get a medal?

I am really irritated by the remarks of Human rights commission... Those crackbots are criticizing the police for not catching the culprits alive and are condemning the shooting by the police..... Idiots did they even realize that two police men have been injured by the shooting and are admitted into the hospital...

Next time we should ask the HRC to handle the situation.... Crackpots, will say anything for appearing on screen...

In Vizag today they caught a Bihari ganag robbing ATM's
Also there have neen severalother parallel incidents here in TN(several other robberies), all alleged to have been done by the Biharis...

This is the reason we should not become like USA- No gun licenses for all.... we will end up like Brasil.....

There was a similar incident before. Couple of armed robbers broke into a house of an affluent/influential persons home (this happened in 98~99), and got away with all the valuables. The police arrested some laymen and made them the culprits. A few months later the stolen property and the robbers were eventually caught in another state. Incidentally they were also migrants

Thug...thuskaran -the word itself came from Hindi! Look at the explanation. this means, there are tribals and other groups whose "job" is to loot.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thuggee (Hindi: ठग्गी or ṭhagī; Urdu: ٹھگ; Sanskrit: sthaga), also known as tuggee or simply thugs, was a religious cult and an organized gang of professional assassins who traveled in groups across India for several hundred years. They were first mentioned in the Ẓiyāʾ-ud-Dīn Baranī (English: History of Fīrūz Shāh) dated around 1356.[1] In the 1830s they were targeted by William Bentinck, along with his chief captain William Henry Sleeman, for eradication. They were seemingly destroyed by this effort.[2]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuggee
The Thuggee would join travellers and gain their confidence. This would allow them to then surprise and strangle them by tossing a handkerchief or noose around their necks. The killings were performed in honour of the goddess Kali and were very ritualistic.[2] They would then rob the bodies of valuables and bury them. This led them to also be called Phansigar (English: utilizing a noose) a term more commonly used in southern India.[3]
There are two villages/colonies(Raamji nagar,Trichnapally and Panavadalichatram,Trinaveli) which are often accused for organized thuggery through out Kerala. Last Year, A tribal group as far from Madhya Pradesh was arrested for planned looting in Cochin. Kerala Police who went to raid these colonies were shocked to see Local Police and Officials are actually supporting these thug groups.

Village of Thieves - Panavadali Chatram at Tirunelveli District of Tamilnadu

A news about "Village of Thieves". Don't get panic of hearing the statement the name absolutely meaningful for that place. The place is known as Panavadali Chatram and is situated at Tiruneveli district of Tamil Nadu. Agriculture is only thing that villagers can earn money. The place looks like a residential area about 1000 houses built in kerala style. Crystal clearly we can say it resembles the same as houses in our cultural capital Thrissur i.e every house are furnished with top class marble and wood works. Each of them have coconut palms in the front area. Another peculiarity is there will be two stair cases in which one will be inside and latter through outside. These are the introduction and the central part is "From where they got so much money to live in middle class grade?" The answer is most of them coming to kerala especially to Thrissur district for collecting dumped items and do some robberies. As the people coming from there increased enormously number of robbery increase and it become head ache for Kerala police. The recent updates were master brain behind North Malabar Gramin bank robbery is from panavadali chtram. Our police are incapable of catching them at their premises with out help of Tamil Nadu police and when the issue become serious the tamil nadu police arranged a meeting at the village presided over by DIG-Kannappan , about 600 people took part and arranged two sub inspector to enquire the case on each police station of kerala.

In South India armed robbery doesn't work because there is a very good chance of getting caught and even worse dieing in an encounter due to better law&Order and rule of law.A few years back they robbed the bank in Vizag at Visalakshinagar.Immediately the whole city routes were closed ,and they found the culprits and Bingo

Ya... But, we cant risk it... we should not be legally allowed to carry fire arms... If every Indian is allowed to carry fire arms then.....

Something similar to this. I said the police did apprehend the perpetrators, how they did is another story.

In TN our police act tough against any law and order situation only when the politics enter the acts as fools like the law college incident. If Police is kept out of CM or even like EC answerable to court hell the child rapers and murders will wet their pants lol.

No,

most of the prisoners enjoy with drugs, cell phones, cigarettes, good food with mineral water. only thing is they are out of their home, that's it.

so, in some cases TN police use .45 to close the case. just like, coimbatore incident (a girl child was raped and killed by a man and body was found after two days with her brother's body). in that case, no human right activists raised too much voice. maybe they accepted cop's verdict.
