Notice all territories, when separated from the state are worse off than before.

Catalans Vote as Secession Push Piles Strain on Rajoy

Catalans began voting for a regional government, driving a push for independence that may weaken Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
---

Catalans are set to hand nationalist parties a majority in the regional parliament, putting them on a collision course with Rajoy's national government in Madrid, which has held that a referendum on secession would be unconstitutional. Mas was on track to claim 62 seats and the separatist Catalan Republican Left another 18, according to a Metroscopia poll published Nov. 18 before the pre-election blackout period.

"The Catalan government is likely to push for a legal referendum to be held within the next two years," Antonio Barroso, a political analyst at Eurasia in London and a former Spanish government pollster, said in a Nov. 20 research note. Mas "cannot backtrack once he is re-elected," he said.

From windows and balconies around the regional capital of Barcelona, nationalist supporters hung the flag of Catalan independence while tourists at the stalls along the main boulevard, Las Ramblas, bought canaries and guinea pigs as well as shirts of the city's iconic soccer club.

Catalonia election: Separatists win majority

Catalan President Artur Mas says he will consult the people on independence within four years

Voters in Spain's Catalonia region have given a majority to parties seeking Catalan independence.

However, Catalan President Artur Mas, who called the early election and pushed for independence, lost seats.

His centre-right CiU remains the largest bloc, winning 50 seats out of 135, down from 62 last time.

The left-wing separatist ERC won 21 seats. But a BBC correspondent says despite their combined majority, the parties may be unable to work together.

Both the CiU and ERC want to hold a referendum on independence from Spain.
Mr Mas told the BBC he would consult the people on independence within the next four years.

In that case, I would definitely miss the Real Madrid - Barcelona hardcore rivalry matches.

But key questions remain for football-mad Catalans who support independence, What would happen to thier Barcelona FC after Catalans Independence

Should their team drop out of the Spanish league? And if so, would the club – whose current squad is considered among the finest ever assembled – be content to play against the poorer competitors of a new Catalan league?

During the El Classico match they were huge Catalans flags waving

it's reported Catalonia contributes 20% of GDP while holding 10% of Spaniards. no wonder their grumbling and posturing regains momentum in recession and austerity.
