We shouldn't look to videos from Sun TV as being the mainstream views in Canadian society about India. They are in fact fringe views, driven largely by neo-conservative thinking which contrasts India with the Muslim-majority ME and authoritarian China for the purposes of seeking future friends/partners for Canada. Not that the Canadian mainstream is anti-India, but it is just not as "enthralled" or "pro-India" as the right-wing, ultraconservative media like Sun TV makes it seem.

Sun News viewers are usually racist xenophobes analogous to extreme Republicans in the US. They form a small minority of public opinion......just something to keep in mind, since many such Sun News videos have been showing up on Youtube extolling the virtues of an alliance with India.

While I like all the statements made in the video, a point that was made in it that meant that they were hoping that India would be part of the solution to some of the problems that plagues this world. There is one thing that others should have realised about India by now. This elephant doesn't necessarily move if it sees a farm full of sugarcanes or a swarm of ants. It moves only if it is mortally endangered. So better not have much hopes about India "contributing" to the solution in the way that they expect, atleast in the near future. India has for long, lost touch with its Chanakyan roots.

My view is, something is better than nothing given how India has behaved like a strategic 'Kumbhkarna''.

NOT TRUE! I watch Sun TV.To describe Sun TV's viewers as racist xenophobes is like describing all BJP supporters as anti-Muslim fascists.True there are some bad apples. But that is true with every political movement. What we Indians should realise is that there is a great oppurtunity for us in making common cause with those whose interests converge with that of ours.Middle Easterners,Russians and Chinese are not our friends. The left in North America and Europe are hostile towards India.Right of centre political movements are reaching out to India.Sad to say our leaders have chosen to ignore them.George Bush is a good example of a most pro India western politician. Its mind bogling to see our leaders attending a ridiculous non-align summit in pro-Pakistan mullah controlled Iran!!Time to break with Nehruvian distortion of the world.Put India ahead of socialist ideology and political expediency.

Then you're the only Indian I know that watches Sun TV.

The problem with making common cause with right wing ideologues in other countries is that by their very nature, they are predisposed towards xenophobia and picking fights with others. Their thought process is structured in such a way that they assign blame on anyone and everyone whom they perceive is not like themselves. Their world view is based on dislike and often rabid hate of "the other". Today, that "Other" is the Muslim world. During the Cold War, that "other" were all socialist countries (and if you remember, socialist India became the target of the nuclear armed USS Enterprise in 1971). Tomorrow, it will be China, which is neither socialist nor Islamist, but nevertheless it is not sufficiently "western" and neither does it kowtow to the west.

Day after tomorrow, that "other" may be India.

I am reminded of the famous verses by Martin Niemoller in reference to Nazi persecution:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

The western right wing ideologues may use India today as a pawn in their fights against the Islamic world or against China, and tomorrow they will use Pakistan or some other country to fight India and cut us down to size. Their objective is to maintain the global hegemony of the west at all costs. We need to realise this simple fact and chart our own course.

What we need to do is build alliances with the progressive elements in all countries-elements who are against war, in favour of equity and global sustainable development. They can be our only true allies, not these Sun TV presenters or those who think like them.
