This is the same second lot of 6. GoI was dragging feet as usual to finalize contract.

But this below article claims that India has ordered 6 in 2007 and 6 in 2012..

so does this means now MOD has cleared the purchase of 13-18 aircrafts??

12 confirmed as of now. No news about more orders. Probably it is now or never as IIRC, C-130 assembly lines are scheduled to wind down soon.

Ok...

But we are likely to end up with 18 planes? or 12 is the cap??

C-130 production is on track, but its C-17 Globemaster whose production in ending soon, if we need to increase the number its now or max by 2014 that we should make a request for them, i believe we need a max of 20 C-17 and 30-40 C-130Js, after this order it will be good if Tata's can make C-130s in india as we are hearing, but we would need more of these, navy and coast guards can also order these.

Iraq Orders C-130Js

iraq orders c-130j-30

The stretched C-130J-30 is 15 feet longer than its C-130J counterpart, with most of the added fuselage length placed forward of the wing. C-130J-30s can carry 33% more pallets of equipment or supplies, 39% more combat troops, 31% more paratroopers, or 44% more aeromedical evacuation litters than previous unstretched Hercules versions like the IqAF's C-130Es. The stretched C-130J-30 also shares the redesigned C-130J's ability to use much more of its theoretical cargo capacity in hot or high altitude environments, a feature that will see a great deal of use in Iraq.

why didnt india order these??

Six Additional C-130J Super Hercules for the Indian Air Force

C130J Super Hercules

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of the Indian Ministry of Defence cleared the purchase of six more Lockheed-Martin C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft from the US under its Foreign Military Sale (FMS) programme. The deal is subject to final clearance by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) before a contract is signed with the US government. The C-130 Super Hercules aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are operated by Number 77 Squadron. This newly acquired fleet of the IAF has been in the headlines in the recent past for its highly effective and praiseworthy role in the relief operations in the wake of the natural calamity in Uttarakhand. The Super Hercules did also make waves when it carried out a historical landing at Daulat Beg Oldie, the world's highest airstrip located in Ladakh in proximity to the volatile Sino-Indian border.

US bags key aircraft deal

India will be procuring six more C-130J Super Hercules Special Operations aircraft from the US, a decision significantly taken in the midst of a diplomatic row between the two countries over the arrest of Devyani Khobragade.

The proposal to procure the six C-130J Super Hercules special operations transport aircraft from the US in a deal worth over Rs 4,000 crore was taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, sources said here.

The IAF already has a fleet of six similar planes which are deployed at the Hindan air base near here and the force uses it for carrying out special operations including landing at the inhospitable air strips in the Ladakh area.

The IAF had acquired the first lot of six aircraft at a cost of around Rs 5,500 crore.

The new lot of six planes will be located at Panagarh in West Bengal, which would be headquarters of the proposed Mountain Strike Corps of the army along the China border.

Like the first lot, the purchase of six additional aircraft will be through the foreign military sales route between India and the US governments.

The aircraft is capable of airdropping commandos and material in darkness due to its night-vision imaging. It can prove very handy in wartime due to its ability for special air operations and transport of material and supplies.

It can be used in mountainous terrain in hostile circumstances. The four-engine plane with Rolls Royce engines has the technology and configuration to perform low-level precision flying.

Now that Indian Air Force has ordered six more C-130J Super Hercules, the Indian navy should also look into this type of aircraft (Lockheed Martin Sea Hercules) for its nine medium-range maritime reconnaissance (MRMR) aircraft tender. Air Force personnel can share their work & experience with their Naval counterparts in terms of logistics & spare parts.

BTW, when are we replacing those God-awful HS 748 Avros? There doesn't seem to be any plan forthcoming in this regard. Any updates on this front?

True, Navy should acquire 9 C-130Js as well, they are all weather capable and can fly even in very adverse stormy conditions, the joint experience of operating them would be very useful. Also IN should order 24 more P-8Is
