With this India joins the growing number of nations with C-130J fleets including the US, Australia, Canada, Italy, Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom. The C-130J carries eight 463L pallets, 97 medical litters, 24 CDS bundles, 128 combat troops and 92 paratroops.

6th c-130j leaves for India

Number six of the six C-130J Super Hercules ordered by India, under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program, departed Marietta on December 15. This aircraft, like its five predecessors, was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget.

The Indian Air Force is in the process of finalising a contract for six more C-130Js, taking its total order of the aircraft to twelve. The IAF's Hercs are part of 77 Squadron Veiled Vipers, based at Hindon Air Force Station on the outskirts of Delhi.

How things change. Today is Vijay Diwas (Victory Day), the 40th anniversary of India's victory in the 1971 war. It was during this war that Indian pilots shot up American aircraft in Pakistan, including, in fact, a C-130 Hercules at Chaklala base by Admiral Arun Prakash (then a young navy pilot on deputation to the IAF).

Other than USAF, No other airforce needs Gunships like those.

They proved very deadly in Vietnam War, They destroyed thousands of enemy vehicles and repelled any attack on US Army base.

Its an Artillery in the sky!!!!

There are too few countries that have that a requirement of heavy CAS platforms with a large loiter. Out of those there are even fewer that can achieve the air dominance necessary to protect a slow moving large target like the Hercules gunship in a contested air space.

UAV's can achieve that much loiter with much lower cost of operation and fast moving assets can be called in when necessary. But yes, the psy ops advantage of a flying gunship raining fire over the enemy is undeniable :)

Those heavy gunship have to come down so that their 105mm can do precious impacts..

MANPADs like SA-7 can be fatal..

UAVs have their limitations, One is huge number of man power other is Expensive unit costs..

Best is a dedicated CAS turboprop or a Jet for CAS..

IAF practices a long range Special Forces deployment to Andamans

The IAF's C-130J Hercules aircraft. The IAF will have 12 such aircraft, kitted for Special Forces operations.

Pasted below is the official PRO Defence account of the practice mission. It must be noted that this mission did not actually carry any Special Forces soldiers... it was more a test of mobilisation, preparation, navigation and tactical flight procedures. It is noteworthy that the 12-hour flight required no en-route refuelling!

IAF SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED LONG RANGE SPECIAL OPERATIONS MISSION

New Delhi – December 20th , 2011

On Monday, 12 December 2011, IAF simulated a piracy contingency at Campbell Bay in Nicobar Islands (the furthermost Island territory of India) based on an intelligence input that an Indian merchant ship had been hijacked with hostages. The mission simulated launching of a Para Special Forces team into the objective area using C-130J as airborne platform.

Planning revealed that the objective was about 3500 Nautical Miles away. The route was via Kolkata and Port Blair to the simulated Drop Zone over Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Islands. The round trip would require a staggering 12 hours of flying time.

The ground crew prepared the aircraft in the early hours of the Monday morning while the air crew finished pre flight briefing procedures. After the walk around at 0430 hours, the four mighty engines roared to life. The aircraft took off at 0500 hrs and the crew commenced the 3500 Nautical Miles trip. Despite encountering inclement weather over the Bay of Bengal, the crew flew C-130J to Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar Islands and achieved the planned objective. The aircraft returned to Air Force Station Hindon after a non-stop mission of 12 hours 03 minutes without refueling enroute. The simulated launch of long range special operation mission was successfully accomplished.

India Buys C-130J-30 Hercules for Special Forces
Dec 26, 2011 13:29 EST .

In May 2006, India Defence quoted Air Chief S.P. Tyagi saying that "the IAF is planning to buy C-130J planes" for its special forces and Border Security Forces. Reports indicate that the IAF is particularly attracted to the C-130J's ability to land and take off even in improvised or short airfields, and without lights. Those characteristics have served the Hercules well in other anti-terrorism scenarios like Operation Yonatan in Entebbe, and are now more routine maneuvers thanks to the C-130J Hercules' modern avionics and increased engine power. That extra power also means that the 'J' model performs well in "hot and high" conditions, which can reduce the useful load of older Hercules or similar transport aircraft by 50-60%.

The new C-130J-30 planes will be bracketed by India's larger Ilyushin IL-76 jet transports on the high end, and on the lower end by twin-engine Antonov AN-32 turboprops. India's interest in the Hercules is quite specific to the Special Forces at the moment; but the plane's capacity for additional specialty operations like aerial refueling enhances those operations, and gives the IAF a number of additional employment options. The AN-32s are currently undergoing mid-life refurbishment, and a joint project with Russia's Irkut looks set to develop a Hercules competitor in time for the AN-32's replacement cycle. Nevertheless, this deal is still a major inroad into the Indian market for Lockheed Martin – and is developing further

Contracts & Key Events :

Dec 23/11: Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA receives a $38.4 million firm-fixed-price contract "for the government's intent to award a contract modification to support the C-130J India FMS Program." The modification includes a weapon systems trainer (WST) project to include Phase I and II configuration, associated administration costs, air shipment, spares and support equipment, on-site training, and a visual display system.

Work will be performed in Marietta, GA; Orlando, FL; and Tampa, FL, and is expected to be complete by Dec 19/12. The ASC/WLNNC at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH manages the contract, as India's agent (FA8625-06-6456/P00289) .
