^^ The Js were excellent in rescue operations in Sikkim. Their ability to land in unprepared land enabled rapid deployment of rescue operations. The ability to evacuate 100s of people from the area to nearby bigger hospitals with better life saving equipment really scored big points in IAF. That's the reason more Js are joining us.

I personally like this aircraft a lot. One masterpiece USA developed. Wonder how would A400M compete with this.

Deals for Acquisition of C-130 J Super Hercules

Government has not inked any follow-on deal for acquiring nine additional C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft with the US. However, a Letter of Request (LoR) has been issued to the U.S. Government for the procurement of the additional aircraft. Besides, proposal for the procurement of 75 Basic Trainer Aircrafts (BTA) is being progressed. No Contract has been signed so far.

The cost of the procurements will be known once the Contracts are finalised and signed.

Capability building of the Indian Air Force (IAF) is undertaken on a continuous basis to meet the security challenges facing the country.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Ranjitsinh Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil in Rajya Sabha today.

India Issues Letter Of Request For 9 More C-130s

Dec 7, 2011

India has issued a letter of request to buy an additional nine more C-130J transport aircraft, Defense Minister A.K. Antony told parliament Dec. 7.

On Oct. 26, the Pentagon notified the U.S. Congress of a possible sale to India of six Lockheed Martin C-130Js, plus associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support, for an estimated $1.2 billion, on top of six of the airlifters ordered for the same price in 2008.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress that in addition to the six aircraft, the deal would include "six Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 spare engines, eight AN/AAR-47 missile warning systems (two of them spares), eight AN/ALR-56M advanced radar warning receivers (two of them spares), eight AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispensing systems (two of them spares), eight AAQ-22 Star Safire III special operations suites (two of them spares), eight ARC-210 radios (non-comsec) and 3,200 flare cartridges."

Antony says a proposal for the procurement of 75 basic trainer aircraft is progressing, though no contract has been signed so far.

"The cost of the procurements will be known once the contracts are finalized and signed," he says.

Lockheed Updating Roll-on/Roll-off ISR for C-130 - Defense News

By DAVE MAJUMDAR
Published: 7 Dec 2011 17:34

Even as the U.S. Air Force starts flight-testing next week of a new version of its Senior Scout payload for the C-130J Hercules cargo plane, Lockheed Martin is working to add an electro-optical/infrared camera to the roll-on/roll-off signals intelligence package, company officials said.

"In 2012, it will also have imagery capability," said Tom Boyce, Lockheed's manager for airborne collection and exploitation systems.
The capability will be "an enhanced version" of those aboard the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency's Shadow Harvest program or the U.S. Marine Corps Harvest Hawk, which puts an infrared sensor ball and weapons kit on a KC-130J tanker, Boyce said.

Unlike Harvest Hawk, Senior Scout won't carry weapons, he said.

Lockheed can develop such ISR packages quickly and at lower cost because it uses the technology in multiple packages, said Charles Gulledge, head of business development for airborne reconnaissance systems.

A lot of the technology is common to the company's entire Dragon family of ISR systems, he said. The new Senior Scout variant is slated to become operational next spring.

Development work is well underway, with the EO/IR camera being built and slated to hit the lab for tests in February, Boyce said. If everything goes as planned, the camera will be mounted on a C-130 next autumn for flight testing, and become operational the following year.

"We should expect the first use of that in 2013," Boyce said.

Originally developed in 1991 by the Air Force's Big Safari office, the venerable Senior Scout package is being upgraded to work with the airlifter's J variant as well as with older planes, Boyce said.

While the Senior Scout program is strictly for the U.S. government, the actual pallet housing the new sensor package could be exported to foreign customers.

So, that's 6(being delivered) + 6(ordered) + 9(yet to order) = 21. That will effectively replace our IL-76s meant for transport.

24 C-130s looks more like a over shot to me, Considering we are spending a 1+ Billion for 6 Aircrafts only.

We already have An-12s which can last for another decade or minimum and in future MTA has replacements. The first prototype is expected to fly by 2014 and enter operational service by 2017.

We actually acquiring more aircrafts than our requirement.

No.

AFAIK, 6 delivered + 9 to be ordered soon in this FY11-12. So, 15 and most likely these 9 will be operational by any time in 2014.

We were planning to order 6 but now we might order 9 as per news. The deal has not yet signed.

Hmm... my bad. Then that's 6 + 9. Still a good number to have.

That's apart from the 16 C-17s and upto 8 more potential orders. These may replace the IL-76s then.

I think we should order 6 C-130 for special forces and go for C-130XL. C-130XL can easily do what IL-76 can do.

C-130J creates record by undertaking longest flight in IAF

NEW DELHI: The C-130J Super Hercules aircraft of the Indian Air Force has set the record for the longest ever flight undertaken by a military aircraft in the country without refuelling.

"Two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft successfully flew non-stop for 9 hours and 45 minutes from Rome in Italy to Muscat in Oman in June this year setting a record for longest flight without refuelling by any IAF aircraft," IAF officials said here.

IAF's fighter aircraft such as the Su-30MKI are learnt to have registered flights of longer duration but they are refuelled in the air by oil tanker aircraft which help in extending their ranges.

"The sortie was preceded by meticulous pre-flight planning and was undertaken after arriving at the optimum value of fuel consumption to successfully accomplish the mission within the flight safety ambit," they said.

The C-130J was procured from the US under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route in a USD one billion deal and was inducted into the IAF in February this year.

All the six aircraft have arrived in India and have been deployed at the Hindon air base near here under IAF's 77 Squadron.

India is planning to procure six more such aircraft and will deploy them at the Charbetia airbase in Odisha from where it will look after requirements of the Andaman and Nicobar Island territories and the Northeastern states.

The sixth and final C-130J for IAF is due to depart Marietta, GA either ON the 15 th or 16th of December. The aircraft was earlier scheduled to be delivered in October. All 6 C-130J will be stationed at Hindon Airbase (near Delhi).

Next 6 C-130J in Charbetia (Odisha) for North-East and A&N Islands.

AN-12 has been long retired from IAF i believe you are referring to the IL-76 and a good upgrade to this plane can keep it in service for another 2 decade after all its only transport...
