BSF jawan held for helping smugglers
India - 11 april 2011
AMRITSAR: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a Border Security Force (BSF) constable Gurcharan Singh posted at Daoke for allegedly facilitating the smuggling of 75 kg of heroin into the Indian territory from the India-Pak border in Punjab. DRI sleuths on April 6 had confiscated 75 kg of heroin from smugglers on the India-Pak border in the district.
DRI sources on condition of anonymity said that under normal circumstances, one BSF constable guards around 500 meters of area and can help smugglers to smuggle contraband in the area under his watch. "In this case he told his handlers about his duty and facilitated the smugglers," the sources said.
The arrest of the BSF jawan has put a question mark on the functioning of the BSF that claims to take all precautionary measures to prevent smuggling. It may be mentioned that recently there have been an increased number of infiltration bids by smugglers.
