What is our idiot govt doing about this ? Are they even aware ? With satellite imagery and other technical advances they should be able to pinpoint what is happening here.

Brahmaputra river dries up in Arunachal
Itanagar, Feb 29, 2012, (PTI)

The Siang (Brahmaputra) river originating from Tibet was suddenly found to have almost dried up at a town in Arunachal Pradesh, a state government spokesman said on Wednesday night.

People of century-old Pasighat town in East Siang district found that the water level of the river receded so much this evening that it almost dried, Tako Dabi said.

Dabi, also the political advisor to Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, expressed apprehension that China could have diverted the water of the river, which is known as Yarlong Tsangpo in Tibet, or there could be some artificial blockade due to which this has happened.

On June 9, 2000, the water level of Siang rose suddenly by 30 m and inundated almost the entire township causing widespread destruction to property besides claiming seven lives following the collapse of a hydropower dam in Tibet, said Dabi, who himself inspected the dried bed of the river.

The most uprising thing is, The Bangladesh gives a blind eye over this issue even when they are the one who are mostly affected by this.

Brahmaputra dries up in Arunachal Pradesh; China's hand suspected - iSikkim

Itanagar: March 1, 2012

The Siang ( Brahmaputra) river originating from Tibet was suddenly found to have almost dried up in Pasighat in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, a state government spokesman said on Wednesday night.

People of Pasighat town in East Siang district found the water level of the river receded so much on Wednesday that it almost dried, Tako Dabi said. Dabi, also the political adviser to CM Nabam Tuki, expressed apprehension that China could have diverted the water of the river, which is known as Yarlong Tsangpo in Tibet, or there could be some artificial blockade due to which this has happened.

On June 9, 2000, the water level of Siang rose suddenly by 30 metre and inundated almost the entire township causing widespread destruction to property besides claiming seven lives following the collapse of a hydropower dam in Tibet, said Dabi, who himself inspected the dried bed of the river. Dabi suggested that the Centre and its agencies should immediately conduct a study to find the problem.

Video footage from the scene shows the Siang — which is several kilometres (miles) wide at Pasighat, according to Dabi — reduced to flowing in several narrow channels in the large sandy riverbed.

The panic of the people can't be brushed off, he said. Yarlung Tsangpo, the highest river in the world, is a water course that originates at Tamlung Tso Lake in western Tibet, southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. It later forms South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, before entering India at Tuting in Arunachal.

Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh is a part of the great Brahmaputra. Siang River enters India in the Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. The River is known to have its origin in China and offers one of the premium wilderness expeditions in the world.

Siang River valleys and tributaries are the home of the Adi people of Arunachal Pradesh. The Siang River offers ample opportunities for adventure sports like river rafting, angling, and trekking. A hanging bridge on the Siang River is an interesting sight to be seen. The bridge made of cane and bamboo is around 60 to 70m long, connecting the hill tribal settlements. The river Siang is known as Brahmaputra in Assam. The Brahmaputra is the confluence of Siang and Lohit rivers of Arunachal Pradesh.

It later forms the South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, before entering India at Tuting in Arunachal as Siang, takes the name of Brahmaputra in Assam and enters Bangladesh and is known as Megna.

In the Upper Mekong Basin in Yunnan Province, China has planned to construct eight cascade hydropower dams, the first of which, the Manwan Dam, was completed in 1996.

Chinese activities drying up Brahmaputra: NGO

DNMUM213692 | 6/18/2011 | Author : Prasanta Mazumdar | WC :304

Social organisation Jana Jagriti on Friday claimed that the Brahmaputra was getting dried up in the wake of 'Chinese activities' on the Yarlung Zangbo river.
"We have observed that the water in the Brahmaputra and floods caused by the river decreased alarmingly in the past two years or so causing an increase in sand cover.

In fact, we are having floods in seasons when there shouldn't be any flood," Jana Jagriti president Ashokanand Singhal said in Guwahati.
He claimed that China was constructing a number of tunnels and reservoirs to divert the water of Yarlung Zangbo to its north. The process began in 2002 but China is disclosing the projects in a phased manner, he said.

"China is facing a serious water and power crisis. So, it is diverting the water of Yarlung Zangbo and a number of other rivers in Tibetan plateau to its north," he claimed.
Singhal said on June 6 this year, the Xinhua News Agency filed a report highlighting Chinese work to take water from the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra to the country's north.

"The report only substantiated what he had said last year. We showed through satellite imageries and maps how China was constructing a number of projects on the Yarlung Zangbo river to divert water," Singhal said.
He asked external affairs minister SM Krishna if his assertion to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi that the course of the Brahmaputra was not being diverted was based on Beijing's assurances or New Delhi's own findings.

"If what China is saying is true, let the country allow a team of Indian experts to visit the sites. Let China share its water data with India. Everything will then come to light," he said.
Singhal urged the Assam chief minister not to buy Krishna's assertion if it was based on Chinese assurances.

Satellites to verify China's claim on Brahmaputra: India`
Jun 17, 2011 |

IANS

India on Thursday said it has satellite imagery proof that China was building only a run-of-the-river dam for power projects on the Brahmaputra river and that it posed no threat to Assam or Arunachal Pradesh.

"India today has assets and satellites that produce superb, high-calibre imagery and we have ascertained from our own sources of information and imagery that China is only building a run-of-the-river dam at Zangmu in middle reaches of Yarlung Tsango (as the Brahmaputra is called in Tibet)," a top government official said.

Stressing that the clarification this time on the Chinese dam was different, the sources pointed out that all along India had only quoted Chinese foreign minister or the prime minister's assurances in this regard to state that there was no danger of diversion of the Brahmaputra's waters.

"We don't just discuss or just trust...we also verify," the official said, noting that India had the satellite capability for the last three years now. India launched Cartosat-2 satellite, having a very high resolution, in 2007.

China is likely to complete the work on the dam by July 2012 after which the water will flow through the dam, the sources said, noting that till such time the work is complete, a temporary dam in the midstream of the river had been done to aid construction.

"However, the river channels on either side of the dam continue to flow," they said.

"The government doesn't feel concerned or alarmed over the dam. But that doesn't mean we not make noise if any diversion takes place," they added.

The clarification came even as External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told reporters after his meeting with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi earlier in the day that China has assured India it is only building a run-of-the-river power project on the Brahmaputra in Tibet and that it would not divert the river.

"As a result, the question of diversion or storage of the water doesn't arise," Krishna said, assuring that India was monitoring the development though satellites to verify reports on its own.

"So when this is the case, my earnest suggestion to the governments of Assam as also Arunachal Pradesh is they should go ahead and prepare the necessary project reports in order to utilise the Brahmaputra water to the maximum benefit of the people," he said, adding that the states should prepare a plan in consultation with the Planning Commission and other agencies.

Gogoi said there were reports of diversion of the Brahmaputra water by China, and this could have an adverse ecological impact on his state.

"I have discussed this with Krishna and he told me ... there will be no impact and there will be no shortage of water," Gogoi said.

Pointing out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had earlier announced the creation of a northeastern river water authority, Gogoi said Arunachal Pradesh had not agreed to the idea.

"The purpose (of the authority) is the full utilisation and proper management of waters, whether for irrigation or power. We (Assam) are contemplating having an (authority) of our own. We have constituted an expert committee also," he added.

Government sources pointed out that the number of catchment points for the Brahmaputra inside India was huge and that the quantum of water that flows into India from China was 'much, much lower' than the outflow from India to Bangladesh.

"We have enough water for all our development works and for the future too. Harnessing the water resources is in our hands. We have to do it for irrigation, power and flood control," the source said.

Another news saying water level is rising..

Brahmaputra water level rises marginally
PTI | 02:03 PM,Mar 01,2012

Itanagar, Mar 1 (PTI) A day after the Siang (Brahmaputra) river originating from Tibet was found almost dried up at Pasigha town in Arunachal Pradesh, the water level of the river rose slightly today. Though Pasighat deputy commissioner Talem Tapok said the rise in the water level could be because of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas last night, government officials said they would request the Centre to investigate the cause.

A government spokesman, Tako Dabi, had said last night that people of the century-old Pasighat town in East Siang district had found that the water level of the river, known as the Brahmaputra in Assam and the Meghna in Bangladesh, receded so much that it almost dried. Dabi, who had inspected the spot last night, had expressed apprehension that China could have diverted the water of the river, which is known as Yarlong Tsangpo in Tibet, or there could be some artificial blockade due to which the water level had receded.

The chief engineer of the Water Resources Development Department WRD), L Angu, told PTI this morning that there was nothing to worry about since for the last several years there was no consistency in the water flow in the river. Rajya Sabha Member from the state Mukut Mithi said all rivers in the state, including the Siang, recorded extremely low water level because of scanty rainfall this monsoon. WRD minister Newlai Tingkhatra said that he had alerted the district administration and the disaster management department to be in vigil for any eventuality.

Yarlung Tsangpo, the highest river in the world, is a watercourse that originates at Tamlung Tso Lake in western Tibet, southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Why is everyone jumping on the china train first chance they get ?

Without any proper information , why blame China ?

When they were building dams , it was said since there are tributaries on our side of the border that feed the river it would not be a problem.
now we get one report from a single town that its water is low and all of sudden , that reasoning is tossed out the window.
In favor of the lynch China mod.

UN and international laws states that waters shared by many nations should not be stolen by one,
Stealing water is an act of war. There must have been important reasons for laws like this? But maybe we
are just being paranoid and trust the chinese they would not lie(like they did in 1962) or do anything against
Indian interests (like help Pakistan).

Only a mere 20 % water comes from YarlungTsangpo section to Brahmaputra. Most of the water in Brahmaputra are from rain waters of the himalayan range on this side of the Chinese dam.

This water of brahmaputra every year causes massive floods and gets lost in the bay of bengal.

The water shortage must be due to some blockage which is happening during construction of numerous hydro power projects in Arunachal... (from OM)
