IMPHAL: Suspected militants triggered a powerful explosion in an area close to Raj Bhavan where President Pratibha Patil was staying, forcing the Manipur government to enhance vigil across the capital.

The bomb went off near the Ananda Singh Academy around midnight, creating a crater on the road. Though no one was injured, the roof of a nearby school was badly damaged. The place where the incident took place is only one-and-a half km from Raj Bhavan.

Police suspect that a remote control device was used for the blast. Immediately after the explosion, state police commandos launched a massive manhunt. Some dry cell batteries and a wire were found from the spot.

Before wrapping up her two-day Manipur visit, the President on Friday laid the foundation of an IT park and launched the State Wide Area Network here. She also attended a video conference session with DCP (Ukhrul) Ashok Kumar.

Addressing the gathering, Patil urged the people to maintain harmony and reject violence. Pointing out Manipur's sports potential, she said: "I congratulate Manipur for bagging the top slot at the 34th National Games. I am sure the state will continue contributing to nation-building."
