IMO Harbin the so called oriental Moscow [emoji1] is a better candidate city for winter olympiad. But did Harbin fail last time?

It may cost far less in Beijing on a positive note since most of facilities r ready made there, infra, stadiums, athlete residences etc.. Thus less investment is required supposedly.

Aside from promotion of sports and its spirit Olympics has been highly commericialized long since especially of the summer . Only that the winter ones may be a hard sale due to less popularity but things r changing.

Lots of top notched multinationals r bidding for olympic sponsorship. In the long run hosting olympics is able to break even and lucrative with the marketing of television rights, advertising and increased tourism etc. also taken into account.

Japan - hosting Olympics 4 times, 2 summer 2 winter

S. Korea - hosting 1 summer

Never take Olympics as merely fireworks for show!

Country flag
I would have preferred resort-town Zhangjiakou because Beijing becomes very inhospitable in winter when urban smog meets winter. It would have also attracted tourism to that part of the country since it's a gateway to inner-Mongolia.

Stamps for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. CHINA DAILY

Beijing offered a special New Year gift for philatelists and sports fans on Sunday with the launch of the first set of commemorative stamps for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The inaugural set of the stamps comprises two pieces featuring the emblems of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games on a white background, which designers interpreted as a symbol of the purity of ice and snow.

Each of the stamps has a face value of 1.2 yuan (about 18 cents) and is printed with anti-counterfeit watermarks and the words "Beijing 2022".

Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei offer 144-hour visa-free transit

Passengers go through the procedure of 24/144-hour International Transfer at the Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 28, 2017. (Xinhua/Luo Xiaoguang)

China extended its visa-free period for people transitting through Beijing to 144 hours Thursday, and added neighboring Hebei Province and Tianjin City to the program.

Transit air, train, and ship passengers entering either of the six border ports in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei can stay in the region for six days before heading for another destination, according to Beijing's Port Office. A valid travel document and a connecting ticket are required.

People from the 53 nationalities that previously benefited from Beijing's 72-hour visa-free transit policy are eligible for the new policy.

Beijing offered 72-hour visa-free transit from 2013. In 2016, the border office logged more than 26,000 such visits, up 32 percent from a year earlier.
