Dhaka: Bangladesh will seek around USD 4.68 billion in assistance from China for its infrastructure projects when the two nations hold talks to enhance bilateral ties as part of Dhaka's "Look East" policy.
During the three-day Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting, Bangladesh will seek assistance for its 28 projects in telecommunication, communication, energy and health sectors.
Bangladesh's Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan will lead a seven-member delegation while Vice-minister Chen Jian will lead a nine-member Chinese delegation to the 12th JEC meeting, beginning in Beijing tomorrow, The Daily Star newspaper reported.
The last JEC meeting was held in Dhaka in May 2005. Talking to PTI ahead of the delegation's departure for Beijing, an ERD official said a USD 3.68 billion financial assistance will be sought as grant, soft loan, and supplier's credit under relaxed terms as Bangladesh earlier found the supplier's credit conditions unfavourable.
He said Bangladesh will seek USD 1.4 billion to implement the Ganges Barrage Project, and USD 88.12 million for restoration of the flow of Buriganga river and for a project for prevention of river pollution.
