Bangladesh may drop Islam as country's official religion following attacks on minorities
Religious minority bloggers and prominent figures have been killed in the past year in attacks believed to be from Islamic militants

A number of attacks on religious minority bloggers have prompted potential changes

Islam could be dropped as Bangladesh’s official religion following a number of attacks in the country against people of other faiths.

Christians, Hindus and Muslim minority Shiites have recently faced attacks that are believed to have been carried out by Islamic extremists.

The country’s Supreme Court is currently hearing arguments in favour of removing Islam as the official religion of Bangladesh, the Daily Mail reported.

Islam has been the country’s official religion since 1988, but the battle to overturn this – which is being supported by many minority religious leaders – will argue that the decision to designate Islam the official religion was illegal.

However it is unclear how much widespread the support the move would have in the country, where 90 per cent of the population is Muslim, 8 per cent are Hindu and 2 per cent is made up of other minority religions.

In the past month, a Hindu priest was hacked to death at an attack at a temple in Bangladesh’s Panchgarh district in which two Hindu followers were also injured, while in the past year several prominent religious minority bloggers have been murdered.

Islamist groups Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh and Ansarullah Bangla Team are believed to have carried out at least seven attacks on foreign and minority people in Bangladesh in the past year, and although the government denies there is an Isis presence in the country, it is believed members are increasingly being recruited from there.

Jamaatis and hardened Sunnis form over 90% of BD populations. BD can never be secular like India. After liberating BD, India should have occupied it, till all Hindu refugees were repatriated to BD and rehabilitated with honor. India's bumbling foreign policy and weak stance always put her citizens in hardship & distress.

I think BG core element was the Bengali identity and nationalism. If it is the Islam, so why they seceded from the also islamic Pakistan?

There are number of sovereign Muslim nations. Islam was not the consideration for separating from (W) Pakistan. It's a long history and you should look that up. Of course we are Bengalis, but we are Muslims also. That is the difference we have from Indian Bengalis. Should we allow snapping of our Islamic identity, there will be little reason for us to remain sovereign. This will only facilitate an absorption into India.

For BD it's Islamic ideology is the core element in national identity.
Exactly, after going through all the trouble of dividing India, countless people killed, now they say they want to be secular, might as well join back to India.
millions of innocent people raped and killed for glory of islam and now bangladeshi want to sh*t on that scared work of jihad and become secular,

bangladeshi fight for islam, fight for glory and hacked the hindus to death,

go bangladeshi go,jihad should not be stopped until isis rule on bagladeshi country.

BD Muslims are one of a kind. They embraced Arabian Cult but not their language or any of its numerous dialects. Bangladeshis doggedly hold on to Bengali, a derived language of Sanskrit. And what is Sanskrit? It is Hindu civilisation itself.

I have to agree with @Kshatriya87. Already there is a popular sentiment in Bangladesh that Hasina is an Indian stooge and therefore does not have Bangladesh's best interests in mind. If secularism is imposed on this unevolved group of people who have been fed a medieval ideology for centuries, it will only bolster the Islamist opposition's theory about there being a conspiracy to sell out Bangladesh. I reckon there will be a violent coup just a couple of years after Bangladesh becomes secular. Hasina will not risk this. She is herself following a policy of soft jihad which allows her to strike a delicate balance between Islamists on one hand and India on the other. If she leans away from the Islamists any further, they will topple her.

It is irrational on our part to expect Bengali muslims to give up fanaticism and become secular. The possibility is only being evaluated by their court, it will not be supported by their legislature.

Even a rickshaw-puller on the street understands secularism or giving up Islamic ideology will be suicidal.

Thank you. We know what is good for us, and more, we know what is dangerous for us. A secular BD would be easy prey for those who pursue Akhand Bharat. Sorry, we don't want to be in Hindu India.

Lol, there are some right wing Hindus in this forum, and as much crazy as i think they are, nobody is that crazy who want to have BD join back to India. The Akhand Bharat kind of people are oldies in RSS who will die off in few years.

Don't want to live in Secular India? I wished that the pole vaulters thinked like you, then we would have much problem of illegal Bangladeshis lining up for Aadhar cards, but Alhas!!

It doesn't make sense for BD to remove Islam as official religion as it is one of the pillars of their identity as a separate state.

Also I read the Heading in the OP from Independent.co.uk.
Strange, I do not find any reason shown in the article that indicates that BD "may drop Islam as country's official religion"
I wonder why Independent issued such a heading? :hmm: :D

Same here. It's just some plea made by unknown individual/organization, which their courts are reading. Merely reading, nothing more. Not just that, the photo used in the report is actually from a protest in Waste Bengal, not Bangladesh. The last two people on that banner (Kalburgi, Dabholkar) are Indian commies terminated for, well, being deserving candidates.

Britain has lost its marbles due to the dismantling of their global influence. They are shooting arrows in the dark, hoping that at least one arrow will hit somewhere.
