KARACHI: An attack on Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader on Tuesday sparked violent protests in several areas of Karachi, reported Express News.
Protesters pelted stones and burnt tyres and vehicles in various areas including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nagan Chowrangi, Waterpump, Lasbela, Patel Para and Korangi Expressway.
ASWJ leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui was attacked by unidentified gunmen earlier during the day outside a madrassah in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. The attack left six others dead, including four police officials.
According to ASWJ spokesperson Akbar Saeed Farooqui, the injured leader was now out of danger after being treated at the Liaquat National hospital.
Following the incident, the party had urged workers and supporters to remain calm and not stage violent protests.

Sunni Tehreek is Barelvi. and ASWJ is S-e-S. Both are enemies of each other
@KS - Its a religious fight, MQM not involved.

From my understanding ASWJ is the front of banned SeS. Maulana Farooqui survived an assassination attempt a few months back too.

SeS + LeJ + ASWJ vs Sunni Tehreek !

Why aren't Shiites forming militias like in the 80s and 90s ?

Because successive governments of Pakistan have managed to ban and declared these organizations terrorist entities, even prosecuting intense covert action against them. Musharraf even got the U.S. Govt to declare the Sipah-e-Mohammad a Foreign Terrorist Organization, blocking their finances worldwide in return for cooperation in the War on Terror. While the Sipah-e-Sahiba, its Sunni counterpart, has been allowed to metamorphose after (insipid) bans into a variety of splinter groups, including the ASWJ. Some Shia groups, tho, have fought back: like the Tehreek-e-Jafaria which shot dead Maulana Ali Sher Hyderi (ironic?), the fourth chief of the S-S-P, in August 2009.

I doubt they are even breathing with full breaths.

They have been systematically compressed. Remember agencies having comprehensive lists and whereabouts of Shiites and Ahmadiyahs.

Also a lot to do with waning power of Iran. Ahmedi never had militia.
