There is more pressure in playing for India: Somdev

STAFF WRITER 20:44 HRS IST

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) In the limelight after steering India to the Davis Cup World Group stage after 11 years, a relaxed Somdev Devvarman today said there is always more pressure on a tennis player when it comes to representing the country at the world team event.

Somdev last night became toast of the nation when he pulled off a sensational comeback win in the play-off tie against South Africa. He overcame a two-set deficit to beat Rik de Voest 3-6 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 6-2 6-4 to give India an unassailable 3-1 lead.

"I did well to fight back. I stayed focused and got motivation from the team. I knew the match was getting physical. I was creating opportunities but I was missing them.

Ramesh Kumar bags bronze in World Wrestling

New Delhi, Sep 24 (PTI) India's Ramesh Kumar created history by winning the bronze medal in the freestyle 74kg category at the World Wrestling Championship in Herning, Denmark.

The Uttar Pradesh wrestler did what Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar failed to achieve, clinching India's first medal in the prestigious event after a gap of 32 years.

Kumar defeated Alexandr Burca of Moldova on technical points after the repechage round ended with both the wrestlers tied at the score of 7-7 last night.

Kumar, however, started the bout on a disappointing note, trailing 0-3 after the first period.

He then came back strongly in the second session to score two points and then finished off the final period picking up five points as against his opponent's four to finally come out victorious on technical points.

Kumar had earlier defeated Dustin Schlatter of the US 3-2 in the opening round.

Vijender becomes world number one

NEW DELHI: Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist Vijender Singh has achieved yet another first for Indian boxing by becoming the world's top-ranked pugilist in the middle weight (75kg) category. The 23-year-old Bhiwani boxer, who won India's maiden World Championships medal in Milan earlier this month, has 200 points and is ranked higher than the reigning champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.

Atoev, to whom Vijender lost in the World Championship semifinals, is third in the list with 2100 points and Olympic silver medallist Emilio Correa Bayeux (2500) of Cuba occupies the second spot in the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) list updated after the Milan event.

"I am obviously elated at being ranked the highest in the world. It's a fantastic feeling and would motivate me to do better in future events," Vijender, who broke India's Olympic jinx with his bronze in the Beijing Olympics, said. Among the other Indians, former world youth champion Thokchom Nanao Singh has slipped three places to eighth with 1400 points in the light fly weight (48kg) category.

Vijender Singh

New Delhi: Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh on Tuesday became the first Indian to be ranked the No. 1 middleweight pugilist in the world by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

Vijender, who recently won the country’s first bronze medal in the World Championships in Milan, has topped the points tally in the 75 kg section with 2700 points, followed Emillo Correa Bayeux of Cuba, who has 2500 points. Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan , who defeated Vijender in Milan , is in the third position with 2100 points.

Vijender was No. 2 in the chart when the AIBA launched the official world rankings for the first time last month in an effort to determine seedings, which was also used during the recent World meet.

The lists are compiled according to the number of points won by boxers in different ranking events like the Olympics, the World Championships, the Youth World Championships and the continental meets. Since more points are awarded in the Olympics and the World Championships, Vijender has found a place ahead of many of his fancied rivals.

“This honour is like winning another international medal,” said Vijender. “The No. 1 ranking is the recognition of my continuous hard work and consistency at the top level. Now, the most important task is to maintain my position at the top,” he added.

Vijender said he was now motivated to perform better in future. “I am not a person who takes things lightly in the ring. Now that I have been clubbed with the best, my effort would be to do better in international tournaments,” Vijender commented.

National coach G.S. Sandhu said Vijender’s elevation to the top spot was the result of his dedication to the sport. “During practice sessions, Vijender would carefully listen to every instruction of his coach. Other boxers sometime tend to forget the advice, but Vijender would never do the same mistake twice,” Sandhu said.

The Olympic medal, Sandhu felt, made Vijender a hugely confident boxer. “In the Milan World meet, after Vijender had a look at the draw, he declared he was going to win a medal. I have never seen an Indian boxer expressing such confidence in an international meet,” said Sandhu.

Former world youth champion Thokchom Nanao Singh has lost three places to grab the eighth position with 1400 points in the light flyweight (48kg) category. Olympian Akhil Kumar has gone down a rung to 10th spot in the featherweight (57kg) category with 1050 points while Suranjoy Singh was 17th in the flyweight (51kg) category.

World Championships quarter finalist Dinesh Kumar has retained the sixth spot with 1550 points in the light weight (81kg) category.

Bagan shoots off letter to AIFF on Bhutia issue

STAFF WRITER 21:17 HRS IST

Kolkata, Oct 1 (PTI) Mohun Bagan today shot off a letter to the All India Football Federation, asking it to reply within seven days on the interim reprieve given to Bhaichung Bhutia and said they are open to alternative legal options and might even approach the world governing body FIFA.

In a six-page missive to AIFF President Praful Patel, Bagan General Secretary Anjan Mintra questioned the move by AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco to refer the matter to arbitrator Amarendra Sharan, who had declared Bhutia a free player, thus giving him interim relief till a final decision is taken to resolve the suspension row.

"It is really hard to understand how by-passing both the governing body of the local committee and the players' status committee the matter has been sent to Mr Sharan," Mitra wrote in the letter.

F1 ace Coulthard to drive on Bandra-Worli Sea Link

Mumbai, Oct 5 (PTI) Mumbai's Formula One fans would have a feast to look forward to when David Coulthard would drive down the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli Sea Link at blinding speeds in a Red Bull racing car on October 11.

The former F1 British driver was originally scheduled to perform innovative F1 show runs, including revving up to speeds of 320 kmph and doing 360 degree spins, in the "Red Bull Speed Link" last month before it got postponed due to the swine flu epidemic, a media release said today.

The 38-year-old Scot, a consultant this year with Red Bull after 14 active years on the F1 circuit, has won 13 Grand Prix races and finished on the podium on 62 occasions while representing Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.

Coulthard is the leading British driver, in terms of points scored (535 from 247 races starting 1994), in F1 history

East Bengal go down fighting to Mahindra

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Wednesday. (PTI)

Mumbai: East Bengal put up a brave challenge before going down to hosts Mahindra United 2-3 in their I-League football second round match here on Wednesday.

The former champions shrugged off a damp pitch and lack of training in the lead up to the match to produce a strong showing but in the end a few defensive errors proved costly.

Mahindra were the superior team, though, and deserved to win despite allowing the visitors to dictate terms for a fair part of the game.

Subhas Bhowmick’s men took the lead in the 29th minute through Alvito D’Cunha who slotted home from close range, the move coming from a quick counter after Mohammed Rafi’s bicycle kick at the other end hit the crossbar.

Subair Murithala Ali, Man of the Match, then came up with two opportunistic headers in the 34th and 43rd minutes to put Mahindra ahead 2-1 at half-time. Steven Dias provided the ball on the first occasion and NP Pradeep on the second.

Yusif Yakubu, coming on for Alvito after the break, had an immediate impact and got the equaliser for East Bengal as he tapped in a cross from Nirmal Chetri.

Things seemed to be going well for Bhowmick’s men when a poor clearance by Mehrajuddin Wadoo left a loose ball outside the box and NP Pradeep blasted it into the net with a snap shot.

Notwithstanding the loss, East Bengal would go home with a mixed heart.

That they were able to match Mahindra despite going into the game with no proper practice since arriving in the city was creditable in itself.

Besides, Yakubu, who joined the team only two days back, displayed his class as he split the Mahindra defence time and again. Bhaichung Bhutia though was a shadow of his own.

The defence still remains a concern for Bhowmick.

That Murithala and Rafi were repeatedly able to find space in their box was a testimony in itself.

The hosts would be happy to have registered their first win of the season although they would be aware that the margin could have been bigger.

The heavy under-foot conditions, thanks to the rain of the previous two days, and the humidity tested the fitness of the players.

Mahindra’s Svetozar Mijin came off even before the end of first half and later Ali had to be stretchered off due to cramps. Similar was the case of Alvito.

Teams

Mahindra United: Subashish Roy Chowdhary, Debabrata Roy, Kalialaudeen Nisthar, D Ravanan, Denzil Franco, Steven Dias, Svetozar Mijin (Paresh Shivalkar, 43), K Ajayan, NP Pradeep, Subair Muritala Ali (Thoi Singh 79) and Mohd Rafi.

East Bengal: Abhra Mondal; Nirmal Chetri, Mehrajuddin Wadoo, Govin Singh, Saumik Dey; Mehtab Hossain, Riston Rodrigues (Harmanjot Singh Khabra 70'), Rennedy Singh, Alvito D'Cunha (Yusif Yakubu 46'), Bhaichung Bhutia, Sanju Pradhan (Subhash Singh 80').

Mohun Bagan register first win in I-League

STAFF WRITER 20:28 HRS IST

Kolkata, Oct 12 (PTI) Goals from Snehashish Chakraborty and substitute Manish Mathani helped Mohun Bagan open their I-League account with a 2-0 victory over Viva Kerala at the floodlit Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today.

After playing goalless in the first 45 minutes, last year's runners-up drew first blood through Snehashish in the 51st minute.

Having done the goodwork, Snehashish was replaced by 22-year-old Mathani and the Dehradun-born midfielder justified his selection to score the second goal in the last minute of the stoppage time.

Bagan, thus, have three points from as many matches, while Kerala are yet to open their account from two matches.

The win will definitely boost the morale of Mohun Bagan ahead of their derby clash against East Bengal on October 25.

Desperate for their first I-League victory, Bagan, however, started off on a stuttering note.

Abhinav Bindra to picture on famous Walther rifle

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) Ace shooter and Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra will be the new face to promote German-made Walther guns, made famous by James Bond movies.

"Abhinav Bindra is the new brand ambassador of Carl Walther Ltd in the country and his company Abhinav Futuristic Ltd will be in-charge of the guns' sales and marketing in India," Bindra's spokesperson Vivek Nigam told PTI here.

As per the agreement, the two firms will also work together to promote air rifle shooting in the country, he said, adding they are planning to launch "an affordable and cheap" air rifle by next year.

"The plan is to christen the rifle 'Go for Gold', which will have Bindra's picture on its butt", the spokesperson said.

Bindra's association with Walther guns goes back to 10-15 years as he has been using them for shooting practice.

Indian eves reach Asia Cup finals, book 2010 World Cup berth

STAFF WRITER 18:30 HRS IST

K Arumugam

Bangkok, Nov 6 (PTI) It was a double delight for the Indian women's hockey team as they edged out Korea 3-2 to sail into the Asia Cup final, which also assured them a berth in the 2010 World Cup in Argentina.

Jasjeet Kaur struck twice and Rani Ramphal also found the net to put India 3-0 ahead in the semifinal before the Koreans mounted waves of attacks and twice breached the defence to inject fresh drama in the match that, at one stage, had threatened to be a lop-sided affair.

In Sunday's summit clash, India will lock horns with China, who beat Japan by a solitary goal scored by Zhou Yu Diao.

With today's win at the Queen Sikirit sports Centre, the Indian eves qualified for the 2010 World Cup to be held in Rosario, Argentina.

There is no crisis in Indian hockey: HI president - Top Stories - Hockey - Sports - The Times of India

There is no crisis in Indian hockey: HI president
Michael Joseph, TNN 20 November 2009, 12:43am IST

PUNE: Hockey India (HI) president Ashok Mattoo rushed to the Balewadi sports complex on Thursday following reports of a revolt by senior Indian players against foreign coach Jose Brasa, and later did a good job of fire-fighting. "There is no crisis. There was only some misunderstanding between the players and the coach," Mattoo told mediapersons after meeting all the players individually as well as Brasa and the four Indian coaches.

"I heard out the views and grievances of the players and the coaches. I have asked Brasa to interact with the players and take a collective decision along with the Indian coaches. I will also interact with six senior players who are not attending the camp. Their views are important. I will ask them to join the camp," Mattoo said.

Brasa, who also spoke to reporters, said he was surprised that Mattoo had come to the hockey camp. However, he termed his meeting with the HI president as "fruitful".

Some senior players who are attending the camp said the reports of a revolt had emanated following Brasa’s statement to the media last Sunday that former skipper Sandeep Singh would not be available for the World Cup because of a back injury. "The coach should have consulted the doctor before making such a statement," a senior player said.

Mattoo said the decision to replace Sandeep with Rajpal Singh as skipper was a "collective decision of the selectors". He also said he would look into Brasa’s complaints about lack of equipment. "The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has been told to procure the equipment at the earliest. I will also request the government to appoint a sports psychologist for the team," he said.

Mattoo, however, sounded a bit annoyed with Brasa’s regular complaints. "I think the coach should stop complaining and should also give positives."

Mattoo said the HI officials were in touch with the Spanish embassy regarding the delay in the grant of visas to the Indian team, which will attend a week-long training session in Madrid in the end of November. The team will proceed from there to Argentina for the Champions Challenge tournament.

Sports Min directs federations to ban age frauds

STAFF WRITER 13:0 HRS IST

New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) Concerned by age frauds at national level tournaments, the Sports Ministry today directed state federations to ban overage athletes for two years when caught for the first time and hand a five-year penalty if the offence is repeated.

"In the event of conclusive proof that an athlete has committed age fraud, he or she should be banned from participating in any sporting event for a period of two years on the first detection and for five years on any subsequent detection," the Ministry said in an advisory to the Indian Olympic Association, all National and State Sports Federations and Director General of Sports Authority of India.

The Ministry said a detailed policy to deal with the age fraud would be formulated soon.

India’s youngest black belt - Varsha Vinod

She has never watched a Bruce Lee movie, or even heard of him. She would be hard-pressed to name any karate or kung fu movies. But try a karate chop or kick on Varsha Vinod, 5, and you won’t know what hit you. Varsha is the youngest black belt in India and is due to star in an action film produced by Catherine Philip.

Hailing from Ambalapuzha in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, Varsha was busy breaking bricks when her peers played with dolls, thanks to her father and coach, Vinod Viswanathan, a Sensei. From age two, she accompanied him to his coaching classes at Ko-In-Chi Academy of Martial Arts near their residence. “Seeing her interest, I began taking her regularly to the classes,” says Vinod. “With unflagging enthusiasm, she imbibed whatever I taught her. When her talent for martial arts became evident, I began giving her advanced karate lessons a year later.”

By age four, Varsha was a brown belt, the first degree in karate. After that began her quest for the black belt, which she was awarded in May.

NADA continues to live in the past

Even with just a little over three weeks to go for the New Year, the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) prefers to live in the past.

The NADA still has an outdated set of anti-doping rules, though the rest of the sports world, or at least the major players in the anti-doping domain, have adopted the revised World Anti Doping Code that came into effect on January 1 this year. Worse, NADA still has only the 2008 prohibited list of substances on its website.

The NADA became functional on January 1 this year. Unfortunately, it only had a set of rules based on the old (2003) Code. It did not matter much for a nascent organization; there was justifiable satisfaction in having set the process in motion.

The Associated Press: Woods voted top athlete of the decade

Woods voted top athlete of the decade

By DOUG FERGUSON (AP) – 1 day ago

Even after a shocking sex scandal that tarnished Tiger Woods, it was tough to ignore what he achieved on the golf course.

He won 64 times around the world, including 12 majors, and hoisted a trophy on every continent golf is played. He lost only one time with the lead going into the final round. His 56 PGA Tour victories in one incomparable decade were more than anyone except four of golf's greatest players won in their careers.

Woods was selected Wednesday as the Athlete of the Decade by members of The Associated Press in a vote that was more about 10 years of performance than nearly three weeks of salacious headlines.

Just like so many of his victories, it wasn't much of a contest.

Woods received 56 of the 142 votes cast by AP member editors since last month. More than half of the ballots were returned after the Nov. 27 car accident outside his Florida home that set off sensational tales of infidelity.

Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor who won the Tour de France six times this decade, finished second with 33 votes. He was followed by Roger Federer, who won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other man, with 25 votes.

Record-setting Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps came in fourth with 13 votes, followed by New England quarterback Tom Brady (6) and sprinter Usain Bolt (4). Five other athletes received one vote apiece.

Woods, who has not been seen since the accident and has issued only three statements on his Web site, was not made available to comment about the award.

Few other athletes have changed their sport quite like Woods. His influence has been so powerful that TV ratings spiked whenever he played, even more when he has been in contention. Prize money has quadrupled since he joined the PGA Tour because of his broad appeal.

A new image emerged quickly in the days following his middle-of-the-night accident, when he ran his SUV over a fire hydrant and into a tree. He became the butt of late-night TV jokes, eventually confessed that he "let my family down" with "transgressions" and lost a major sponsorship from Accenture.

Even so, AP members found his work on the golf course over the last 10 years without much of a blemish. Woods took an early lead in balloting, and continued to receive roughly the same percentage of votes throughout the process.

"Despite the tsunami of negative publicity that will likely tarnish his image, there's no denying that Woods' on-the-course accomplishments set a new standard of dominance within his sport while making golf more accessible to the masses," wrote Stu Whitney, sports editor of the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader.

"The only proof needed are the television ratings when Tiger plays in a golf tournament, compared to those events when others have to carry the load."

Woods tumbled from the pinnacle of his sport in just about three weeks. The 10 years that preceded that fall, however, represented perhaps the greatest decade in golf history.

He won the career Grand Slam three times over, including one U.S. Open by a record 15 shots at Pebble Beach and another U.S. Open on a mangled leg in a playoff at Torrey Pines. He twice won the British Open at St. Andrews, the home of golf, by a combined 13 shots.

Woods won 56 times on the PGA Tour this decade, a rate of 30 percent that is unprecedented in golf. Nine of those victories were by at least eight shots. He was No. 1 in the world ranking for all but 32 weeks in the decade, that when he was revamping his swing.

He did his best work in the biggest events.

Along with his 12 majors this decade — he has 14 overall, four short of the record held by Jack Nicklaus — Woods was runner-up in six other majors. He won 14 times out of 27 appearances in the World Golf Championships.

Woods finished the decade with $81,547,410 in earnings from his PGA Tour events, an average of $482,529 per tournament.
