DRDO Sources: Third firing of Astra Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile was successfully carried out by Air Force and Defence Research and Development Organisation today. The missile hit the live aerial target near Odisha at maximum range of approximately 90 km.

HUGE. IAF & @DRDO_India round off tests of Astra air-to-air missile with 5 tests in the last 4 days — with 3 tests in ‘combat config’ with warheads & manoeuvring targets, including one target impact which the IAF says took place at at maximum (100+ km) range. Statement:

This is a massive news ! Looks like Astra has won the hearts of IAF - i am anticipating Astra to be a standard BVR across all our platforms. Thakur has already commented that DL on Astra is way ahead of its times - so move out R77 and bring in Astra.

Will do wonders for Make in India. And lastly - once operationalized the type of inputs that will come will make Astra NG much more capable.

I expect even more good news under the new Air Marshal... The days of import-pimps will slowly but surely be gone.

Astra at 100+km. Does its match Amraan 120C5 of PAF?

Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Amraam 120C5 range is around 100-110km.
It is better than AIM120C5 in raw kinematic performance , and as im saying this from quite few years,it is a match for AIM120C7 in terms of overall performance and flexibility,no wonder why IAF officers call Astra a game changer missile....

Missiles aren’t my forte. Could you expand on these points?

Not surprised by this ,indeed a very good system, just requires a bulk order and fast integration on IAF fleet so that we can say good bye to MICA,Derby and R77s.

Do you know how much Israel took to develop derby ER ( dual pulse) from derby? We might deliver Astra mk2 in similar timeframe !

Depends on what IAF wants,if they say that we are going ahead with the base astra but will now fund for the development of mk2 of the varaint which offers further enhancement in the capabilities, then it will still take sometime depends upon the new need, say IAF now requires an aesa seeker and new rocket motor which will itself take few years to validate on the missile,in the long run such developments wont take more than 5,6 years if the base is already there and prodution line already making those in mass.

Astra has similar fuel density but carries more fuel than the amraam, and probabaly higher burnout time for the same density which makes it to sustain more energy for the combat, this also is evident that it also offers siginifcant capability of what is called wvr when compared to amraam

There are certain tit bits in that poster which a keen eye will find and realize that there is a LOT more to our pokey little domestic missile than first impression.

Anyone want to take some guesses? :playball:
Firstly how can Astra BVR be used as CCM?!

Astra use a solid fuel rocket motor. Now such a motor comes prefabricated with fuel in it. It is different then a liquid fuel motor in that aspect.
Now to add extra fuel would mean that you have to redesign the whole casing which would mean a modified final product in end.

Given IAF interest in derby ER it is clear they would want a dual pulse version of Astra with expanded nez.
Dual pulse motor is already there in ngarm missile.

About aesa seeker. Rajnath Singh unveiled new akash NG RF seeker . Need to check what it's based upon. I believe same seeker will be ported to Astra mk2 ( adjusted for size ).
