China condemns US warship near South China Sea island as ‘serious provocation’
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement late Sunday night that China had dispatched military vessels and fighter planes in response to warn off the US vessel

China has scrambled naval ships and military jets to “warn off” a US missile destroyer sailing close to an artificial island built by it in the disputed South China Sea and denounced Washington’s move as a “serious political and military provocation”. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement late Sunday night that China had dispatched military vessels and fighter planes in response to warn off the US vessel.

Sunday, the missile destroyer USS Stethem “trespassed China’s territorial waters off the Xisha Islands”, state run Xinhua news agency reported. The US behaviour constitutes a serious political and military provocation, Lu said, stressing that the Chinese side is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed it. Stethem passed less than 22 kms from tiny Triton Island in the Paracel Islands archipelago, which China calls Xisha islands. The island chain is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam.

While China claims sovereignty over almost all of the South China Sea, the other countries to partially counterclaim over the area are Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. This is the second US naval ship to have passed the disputed islands after President Donald Trump came to power. The US has been periodically sending the naval ships and planes to the South China Sea to assert freedom of navigation challenging China’s claims of sovereignty.

China comes out with similar reaction every time the US naval ships pass through the area. Lu said the Islands are an inherent part of the Chinese territory, noting that in accordance with the Law of China on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone, the Chinese government promulgated the baseline of the territorial sea off the Xisha Islands in 1996

“The relevant Chinese law has explicit provisions on foreign military vessels’ entry into the territorial sea of China,” Lu said. Under the pretext of “navigation freedom,” the US once again sent a military vessel into China’s territorial waters off the Xisha Islands without China’s approval, Lu said.

He said the behaviour of US has violated the Chinese law and relevant international law, infringed upon China’s sovereignty, disrupted peace, security and order of the relevant waters and put in jeopardy the facilities and personnel on the Chinese islands. China says there are problems for international navigation through the SCS but objects to defence vessels going through it.

Working together, China and ASEAN member states have cooled down and improved the situation in the South China Sea Lu said charging US of deliberately stirring up troubles in the South China Sea. The US is running in the opposite direction from countries in the region who aspire for stability, cooperation and development, he said

“The Chinese side strongly urges the US side to immediately stop such kind of provocative operations that violate China’s sovereignty and threaten its security,” he stressed, saying the Chinese side will continue to take all necessary means to defend national sovereignty and security.

The US missile destroyer sailing close to the contentious island chain is the latest in a series of events that add to the growing unease in the relations between the two countries. Last week Trump authorised a new arms sale to Taiwan, which China considers a rebel province, besides slapping sanctions on a Chinese bank accused of laundering North Korean cash.

The chinkis can't afford a war in as many fronts. They will be easily crushed. At the most they will start a war with India for the time being on the Sikkim Stand off issue.

They can't mess with USA as USA can summon Aussies, Japan, Taiwan, SKo at their will.

No they won't... they can't afford it now. Their dream of toppling USA will remain a dream for another 100 years if they do.

The indianexpress should do a bit of fact checking before publishing. Triton island is not man-made.

It's a naturally formed 1.2 square kilometer island within the Paracel Island chain. The entire Paracel chain has been administered by China in its entirety since the PRC expelled South Vietnamese troops in 1974.

What exactly is the US Navy disputing by sailing a destroyer through the Xisha islands? There are no low-tide-elevations dredged into full scale islands in the Paracels as it is in the Spratlys.

Someone should try expalining the difference between the Spratly and Paracel/Xisha island chains to their editors:

US bombers challenge China in South China Sea flyover
Reuters | Updated: Jul 7, 2017, 01.08 PM IST

TOKYO: Two US bombers flew over the disputed South China Sea, the US Air Force said on Friday, asserting the right to treat the region as international territory despite China's claims in the busy waterway.

The flight from Guam on Thursday came as US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare for a likely meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany. The two leaders were expected to discuss what Beijing can do to rein in Pyongyang's missiles and nuclear weapons programmes.

That word can get you in trouble these days, my friend. It is a slur.

Let's not use it.

Trump gives US Navy more freedom to check Beijing in South China Sea
US President Donald Trump has approved a plan giving the country’s navy more freedom to carry out patrols in the South China Sea and put pressure on China’s efforts to enlarge its military presence
Edited by: India TV News Desk, Washington [Published on:23 Jul 2017, 6:57 AM IST]

US President Donald Trump has approved a plan giving the country’s navy more freedom to carry out patrols in the South China Sea and put pressure on China’s efforts to enlarge its military presence by artificially building reefs and atolls in the area.

Analysts believe that the move will add to the uncertainties over Sino-US elations and regional security issues. It is also seen as a challenge to Beijing’s maritime claims over most of the South China Sea and its attempts to overrule overlapping claims by five other countries, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines.

The plan, submitted to the White House in April by the Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, outlines a full-year schedule of when the US navy ships will sail through contested waters in the South China Sea.

The navy will enjoy a lot more freedom than it did during the Obama administration, which insisted on the National Security Council approving major operational decisions.

The move will make it difficult for China to deal with its territorial disputes with other countries such as India and Japan at a time when the Communist Party is preparing for a conclave which will see major political changes.

In 2016, an international court at The Hague deemed China's maritime claims unlawful and excessive, but China rejected the ruling outright and has continued to build military installations and unilaterally declare no-fly and no-sail zones.

When a country makes an excessive naval claim, the US Navy challenges it by sailing its ships, usually destroyers, close to the disputed territory or through the disputed waters as a way of ensuring freedom of navigation for all.

China has responded forcefully to US incursions into the region, telling the US the moves were provocative and that they must ask permission, which doesn't align with international law or UN conventions.
