Army troops get clothing to brave minus 50 degree Celcius temperature

Army has provided latest Swiss winter gear including trousers, jackets and gloves to jawans deployed in places such as Siachen Glacier to enable them brave temperatures that even go below minus 50 degree Celcius.

Jawans deployed in areas including Siachen Glacier, Kargil and Sikkim have been three-layered Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System and each set costs over Rs 35,000, Army sources said here.

The outermost layer of the winter clothing is made up of Gortex and can help troops in braving freezing temperature of up to minus 50 degree C, they said.

The winter gear has been imported by the Army from various Swiss winter clothing manufacturers including Black Diamond.

The Army has procured 40,000 such sets of clothing and the troops in some areas have already started using the kits, they said.

The need for replacing the existing kit was felt by senior Army authorities after it was found that the jackets and trousers in use were very bulky and troops were not finding them very comfortable, sources said.

After the Army started deploying troops to protect its territory in Siachen and other high altitude areas, several measures have been taken by the Government to improve their living conditions there.

The DRDO has also come up with integrated shelter huts which can provide protection to the soldiers against extreme climatic conditions of the Himalayan region.

Integrated Shelter for Troops - Integrated shelterDr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, SA to RM, Secy Defence R&D and DG, DRDO visited Leh-Ladakh on 15th June 2011 and handed over integrated thermally regulated shelters to Lt Gen Ravi Dastane, VSM, GOC, HQ 14 Corps. The shelters designed and developed by DRDO, are equipped with integrated temperature regulators, biodigestors and air monitoring systems. The shelter is modular type and all the services like HVAC, electrical, plumbing and water supply, sewage disposal, kerosene gensets and solar power are well integrated within the shelter.

These shelters designed and developed by DRDO, are equipped with integrated temperature regulators, biodigestors and air monitoring systems. The shelter design is modular and all the services like HVAC, electrical, plumbing and water supply, sewage disposal, kerosene gensets and solar power are well integrated within the shelter. The shelters have been designed to withstand seismic activities upto a level of zone 5, wind velocities upto 55 m/sec and sub-zero temperature upto - 35 degree Celsius. The Carbon Dioxide level inside the shelter is closely monitored and maintained within the safe limits.

One uses solar power for lighting and K oil for cooking with pressure cookers.

There are also generators.

I believe now they have bio toilets.

Food is like normal rations though there are special rations also authorised, There is also packed food as also stuff like Maggi Noodles and their like. Chocolates, raisin, cashew, almond and things. The problem is that none feels very hungry.

There are heaters. Earlier it was the bukharis, now I believe there are these Japanese type heaters.

Separate Toilets and bathing facilities is dependent on the size of the post.

One hardly drinks since none really feels like eating or drinking.

TV and video films wherever feasible.

Re: Army troops get clothing to brave minus 50 degree Celcius temperat

But why Are we buying from the Swiss??? We have communities that are living on those mountains for generations. DRDO should use the technology those communities had developed to Survive the Himalayan cold and should come up with solutions. Its idiotic to import when we have nearly 6Lakh square km of Himalayas under our territory.

at siachen base they are using solar power , but at forward posts and units at some higher altitudes use generators (only for 4 -5 hours a day)

solar energy is there at lower altitudes but wind energy is rare...

they used to eat packed food , and yes some world class chocolates , candies , cashiews , nuts , etc etc ( and yes unit rarely serve maggi)

yes they use toilets , bio degradable are not every where . BSF jawans used to go in open( at outer posts ) , and its quite dangerous ...

they do have TV , with DVD players and now DTH connectivity is also increasing....

they commonly use sikri as a source of heat ....Japanese type heaters ( as stated by Ray sir is not everywhere )

they usually dont bath , for days or weeks ......but Jawans use to melt the ice from outside and for JCOs and Officers , jawans are their .....

That indicates poor discipline and conduct that does not enshrine the conduct that they should adhere to instil the faith and pride of the Nation.

Drinking is prohibited in public places and in railway compartments as per law.

They should have been reported to the nearest MCO so that action could be taken.

As citizens, it is also our duty, without getting into a fracas, to ensure that black sheep do not sully the reputation that the Nation hold dear about its solders.

Re: Army troops get clothing to brave minus 50 degree Celcius temperat

Other issues of poor discipline by men while proceeding on leave are:-

Wearing snow boots at Jammu Rlwy Station

Mix & match, civvy T shirt on army pattern trousers

Without beret in uniform, with an odd muffler tied around the head

Smoking in a no smoking zone

Drinking & use of abusive language while travelling in compartments where people are travelling with families.

These are oddballs, but they stand out like an eye sore.

Most are proud of the fact that they are the protectors of their motherland and behave impeccably,

But some need to have their ideas sorted out. Report aberrations like the one's mentioned to the concerned MCO.
