Army looking for gear to protect troops from AK-47 bullets

Last Updated: Wednesday, February 05, 2014, 12:56

New Delhi: For providing its personnel protection against the lethal bullets of rifles such as AK-47, the Indian Army has issued tenders to procure around two lakh bullet-proof jackets and helmets for its troops deployed in counter-insurgency operations.

The two tenders were issued last year under Army's modernisation programme of its Infantry soldiers known as the Future-Infantry Soldier as a System (F-INSAS) under which it will acquire?1,86,168 bulletproof jackets for its personnel along with ballistic helmets with internal communication gear.

"We have participated in both the tenders to supply these bullet-proof jackets and ballistic helmets with internal communication facilities," Indian firm MKU's Managing Director Neeraj Gupta said here.

He said his firm has responded to the bids issued by the Army under the category in which only six Indian vendors have been allowed to compete.

Gupta said after acquiring a German manufacturing facility, his firm has supplied protective gear to more than 100 international forces and they have been used by them in conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

As per the Army's requirement, it wants jackets with hard armour plates for front, rear, sides, upper arms, groin and throat, capable of protecting against 7.62mm x 39mm mild steel core ammunition fired from an AK-47 from 10 metres.

The Army is deployed in counter-insurgency operations for several decades in North East and Jammu and Kashmir and has been facing shortage of these protective gear as pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General in its recent report.

Gupta said his firm is looking towards providing armoured protection to military helicopters that operate in insurgent and terrorist-infested areas in the country.

can you BELIEVE it? They are talking about buying bullet proof jackets now!
PS- What our troops wear for protection today are garbage, if they cannot even take a hit from a AK-47.

Don't get excited, the tender has been in limbo for 5 years now.

There are different grades of Bullet proof jackets, available in different materials and weights. Army is probably looking for highest grade jackets.
Some facts & myths of bullet proof jacket

The Indian troops did try out the Type III body armor of the US army/USMC in Yudh Abhyas sometime back, and were less than impressed with their sheer bulk and subsequent loss of mobility while wearing the armor.

I believe the IA would go for a mix of protection and mobility rather than go in for out and out protection.

Obviously they will feel constricted because they were new to the type. It's like wearing cricket pads, it take time getting used to. A few weeks of drills in them and they would get accustomed.

How about develop something in the line of Pinnacle Armor's Dragon Skin body armor system??It's constructed of 2 inch circular overlapping discs placed like scale armor. The discs are
composed of silicon carbide
ceramic matrices and laminates. Its lightest variant SOV 2000 provides NIJ level III protecyion against M 80 NATO,Soviet 7.62X54R,M 43 and 9 mm FMJ rounds and provides multishot protection and weighs just 2.5 kg!!

I saw this system in Discovery channel Future Weapons documentary, where Mac fired 120 FMJ rounds of different calibers (an AKM,M 4,HK MP5) against a specimen and it absorbed everything!!Heck they even placed the same armor over a M 67 fragmentation grenade and detonated it.The armor got heavily damaged but still there was no perforation!!
It's very lightweight, flexible, comfortable to wear, easy to maneuver and provides comprehensive and through protection to the wearer.IA should give a thought if they are serious about equipping the infantry.

It is stuck under pressure and false test reports by US arms lobby who does not want to allow it into production. However at the same time, they have restricted access to its technology so that no one else can get it either.

the present bulletproof jacket of rashtriya rifle is manufactured by ofb and it can stop an ak-47(7.62*39) bullet from 15 metres and a dragunov svd bullet(7.62*54) from 50 metres and also slr bullets.quite impressive though it is very heavy(more than 10kg) becuase it contains 2 hard armoured steel plate (one at front and another at back) each weighing approx 5 kg.now next gen bulletproof jacket must be made of ceramic(eg boron or silicon carbide, titanium, aluminium alloy) and must provide all round protection and light weight.
