Chennai, July 27 (PTI) City-based Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, which is developing a new Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle, has reached the final stage of the 'complete specification' for the ARRV, a senior scientist said today.

"The finalisation of complete specification for ARRV is under final stage. We are going in the right direction," the CVRDE scientist told PTI.

The new ARRV, a variant of the Arjun Main Battle Tank, is being developed for the Indian Army at the DRDO lab here.

CVRDE will develop two prototypes in the next three years. The hull, including the chassis automative system, will almost be the same as Arjun Mark II and slight modifications will be made to accommodate a crane and a winch since it will be a recovery vehicle, he said.

The Army is expected to order 30 units if the Chennai-based DRDO lab satisfies its specifications in the first two units.

The new ARRV will weigh around 65 tons and function as a recovery vehicle for the Army in tough terrain as well as in extreme climatic conditions.

Another junk thrust our way!

Maybe I am biased, given my experience with the 'wonderful' DRDO products!

An armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) is a type of armoured fighting vehicle used to repair battle- or mine-damaged as well as broken-down armoured vehicles during combat, or to tow them out of the danger zone for more extensive repairs. To this end the term "Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle" (ARRV) is also used.

ARVs are normally built on the chassis of a main battle tank (MBT), but some are also constructed on the basis of other armoured fighting vehicles, mostly armoured personnel carriers (APCs). ARVs are usually built on the basis of a vehicle in the same class as they are supposed to recover; a tank-based ARV is used to recover tanks, while an APC-based one recovers APCs, but does not have the power to tow a much heavier tank.

Pretty much as Ray quoted from Wiki. If a MBT breaks down on a two way range, the crew need to salvage the tank and the best way to do that is to get another tank to move it, keeping the repairers under the same protection and having the ability to change things like powerpacks.

Britain uses this:

The M88 Recovery Vehicle is one of the largest all weather armored recovery vehicles (ARV) currently in use by United States armed forces. There are currently three variants, the M88, M88A1 and M88A2 Hercules. The M88 series has seen action most noticeably in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, War in Afghanistan (2001–present)/Operation Enduring Freedom, and to a lesser extent during the Kosovo War where they were deployed to help recover heavy armored vehicles of the Allied ground units. The current M88A2 replacement cost is around US$2,050,000.[1]
