Lets face it arjun design is a dead end,it lacks development potential for future.
For future we need 55 ton approx tank with smoothbore cannon,3 crew,no gap in frontal turret, might even be unmanned, secure ammo compartment as well as the ability to field a big gun with long rod APFSDS round.
Arjun has allowed us to develop many key armour technologies which will be incorporated in FMBT.It can still deal relatively easily with paki tanks, but its not the mass produced tank of the future .
Arjun has allowed us to develop indigeneous NERA,Kanchan composite armour, automatic target tracking, navigation system, suspension, panaromic sight, weight reduction measures, and set in motion development of new 1500 HP engine.
But we need bharat forge/drdo to build a new tank gun .If necessary we can do it like turks and get tech from south korea.
Sirji this is all khayali pulao, has the army released the GSQR for the FMBT ?.

This article places the entire indian argument of AFV design on its head. The detractors of MBT Arjun who have kept up a drumbeat of the weight issue, will be at quite a loss now. OMFV: US Army Revamps Bradley Replacement. A new approach to AFV design.

It's useless drumming sense into the heads of the army top brass. They will not buy Arjun in any significant numbers. They and our MOD babus are made for each other I dare say !

Beautiful. Survivability as top priority. Indian army will learn this lesson too. Anti tank missile have proliferated. If we actually want to roam inside Pakistan only Arjun level of protection can keep soldiers safe not tin cans.

Active tank defence system should be a priority for all tanks in the battlefield, ATGM's have advanced a lot in past two decades, basically it's a no no game for tanks for now.

Actually era of tanks were long gone, a decent anti tank missile can kill easily, an attack helo can tank easily, a formation of tanks can be killed easily by a single CBU100 type cluster bomb. I do agree that trophy like system is effective, but its initial & life cycle costs justifying the advantage of using tank is questionable.
Tank in huge numbers is not what a modern army required most.

Quality is always better than quantity. Obviously those systems such as the Israeli one will raise costs but it's better to operate quality equipment atleast rather than those damn T-72s. Also if you don't have a air superiority you might as well not bother with the tanks and probably no force would be launching an offensive without having the airforce in air atleast if they don't have Air superiority.

The scenario is not like that always. Main battle tanks are considered a key component of modern armies. Modern MBTs seldom operate alone, as they are organized into armoured units which involve the support of infantry, who may accompany the MBTs in infantry fighting vehicles. They are also often supported by surveillance or ground-attack aircraft.
In asymmetric warfare, main battle tanks are deployed in small, highly concentrated units. MBTs fire only at targets at close range and instead rely on external support such as unmanned aircraft for long range combat.
The MBT has a positive morale effect on the infantry it accompanies. It also instills fear in the opposing force who can often hear and even feel their arrival.

A big gun you can carry around is never going to go out of fashion unless you can call your drone in a moments notice from home base. Absolute must if you intend to dominate the enemy areas.
Ofcourse they must keep evolving to survive and punish even after atgm attacks. Which means better active protection and air defense.
