Information on the 1,800 hp 6TD-5 could not be found even in the company website.
Most likely because engines more powerfull than 6TD-2/2E are still in development phase, and are proposed a sfuture upgrades.

But 6TD design is 20 years old. Can't they just scale up the engine? If they can't, SU should have developed larger engines for Ob.195 and Ob.640 projects.

Would 1200 HP engine be enough for Ob.195 or 640?

Yes, I think so as well. It is probably a design (not sure whether a prototype exists or not), and once they get an order, and money, they will start producing it.

And who said you that 6TD series were used in Object 195 and Object 640? Object 195 was powered most probably by 12N360 engine which is in X configuration, not more conventional V or Boxer like 6TD. Object 640 was powered by gas turbine, most likely GTD-1250.

6TD is manufactured in Ukraine and Ukrainians are developing it's more powerfull versions, currently manufactured the most powerfull versions are 6TD-2 and 6TD-2E, but there are more powerfull 6TD versions in development, and their size does not need to be bigger.

6TD family is not boxer. It is horizontally opposed piston.

In boxer, you have two sets of pistons on both sides with one crankshaft in the middle, while in horizontally opposed, you have two crankshafts on both sides and the cylinders in the middle.

HORIZONTALLY OPPOSED PISTON

Here is 12N360, nice compact design, of course the question is about reliability.

The power range from 1200HP through 1350HP to 1500HP (nominal) and can be increased to 2200HP.

Russian Translation (top): Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory (UralTrac)
Russian Translation (bottom): Diesel Engine - 12ChN 15/16 (English Name: 12N360 [?])

Also see this image: http://warsonline.info/images/stories/news/13/04apr/tehno/bronya/12n360-1.jpg

Looks like the compression ratio is 1.2 and the max power output is 1,500 hp. If I am understanding it right, it has 12 cylinders in X-configuration.

@Akim, @Lidsky M.D, is the translation correct?

I wasn't saying that. I was asking if 6TD will be sufficient for those two tanks.

In versions with HP ranging from 1500 to 1800 or grater, sure it would be sufficent, but it wont be used, because 6TD is Ukrainian engine and Objects 195 and 640 were Russian projects that are cancelled. And new "Armata" platform will be most likely powered by 12N360/A-85-3.

Ob.195 and 640 weren't started in Soviet Union era?

You can seek there their genesis, but prototypes were builded in Russia after collapse of Soviet Union.

In Soviet Union the perspective tank project was Object 477 from Kharkiv (Ukraine) that could be powered by 6TD.

Afaik, this Ukrainian engine is just 2/3rd size of present Arjun engine and there are very very strong chances that it might find its way into MK2 itself.

MK2 trials are already on anvil. Any updates on this front since last week?

Apparently, IA was satisfied with Arjun MK-II performance in previous trials. & To top it, DRDO has managed to complete all improvements asked by IA on MK-2 variant.

Article: Arjun MK-II Gearing up for final trials (Not sure if this piece has been shared earlier)

Arjun MK-II is all set and gearing up for its final Summer Trials which are to be held by end of next month or in early July before it hits productions. Indian army has asked for 93 improvements to the Arjun Mark II tank including 19 major modifications.

All the modifications suggested by the army had been successfully incorporated in the tank and will be ready for final trials by Indian army after which DRDO will seek clearance for production to start. Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) Avadi will need 30 months (Two and a half years) to deliver first batch of Arjun MK-2 to Indian army, DRDO is also hoping for fresh orders of Arjun MK-II from its current 126 placed by Indian army some time back.

MK-2 will see increase in weight from 62 tonne to 67 tonne. The suspension has been re-designed to handle up to 70 tonne weight. Wheels are bigger in dimensions and have improved track length, MK-2 will be powered by the same MTU engine imported from Germany but it has been improved to carry extra weight of the tank but the top speed of the tank will be limited to 58kmph coming down from 72kmph seen on MK-1 Arjun. DRDO is working on indigenous powerhouse for future tanks but Integrations with Arjun can only happen if Army places order for 3 more Regiments of Arjun MKII (350). Otherwise it will only serve in next generation battle tank which Drdo is developing under Futuristic Main Battle Tank (FMBT) Program for Indian Army post 2020.

MK-2 will have improvements like missile firing capability, improved commander's panoramic sight with night vision, Hunter killer capability, improved Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) , improved communication equipments along with better navigation aid , full frontal Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), Mine plough , improved gun barrel , additional ammunition types.

In Previous trials MK2 did not face any issues and Army was satisfied with its performance, DRDO has now completed all the improvements asked by Indian army on MK-2 variant and hopes Army will be satisfied after final rounds of trials and clears production of it along with fresh orders.
