When I first heard about L&T, I thought it was a foreign company. But I'm proud of L&T company which is a world class company and forms part of the backbone of Indian infrastructure. Recently I have read that L&T is having trouble in finding mechanical and civil engineers for its infrastructure and technological projects. Hope this country will produce more mechanical and civil engineers who will feed into such engineering companies.

If given a good opportunity by Govt., it will not disappoint the country as it is capable of building ships, submarines and other defence related projects. It should be nurtured by GoI for the purpose of private sector defence industry. All the best to L&T.

The company has a good base and has expanded rapidly over the last decade into various fields. It is there in roads which is its bread and butter. You will hardly find a road on the indian highways where some portion is not built by it. It is also there in a major way into making the metro infra all over the country. Ship building, IT, finance. It even makes welding rods and valves that goes with the name Audco. It was into cement too before it sold that business. It is getting into defense sector in a big way and is already a major partner of DRDO.

atleast for me it was never about a few L&T's or TATA's to be proud about but about any and every such person who has the ability to take a risk to start a venture, employ people, have sustainable business models. scaling up businesses depend a lot on what is one's risk taking appetite, the vision that person has, the thought process put in, the finances at disposal, how good one is at networking, and execution but the real effort is about that one initial step to be taken and in that case even a corner roadside shop is worth the appreciation for you never know how big that business might become in times to come.

all this reminds me of this person, whose story was narrated to me recently by someone. he was a class 10 pass out, didnt get the job of his liking so took up a job of a peon in an office, while doing that job he thought why not alteast be a 10+2 pass out so he took up to studies side by side and completed his class 12 with reasonably good marks, then he thought that i have done my class 12 why not do graduation and soon enough he had done that and all this time he continued his job as a peon in that company. then an idea struck him and he wondered why not give it a shot at CA (chartered accountancy) and guess what this hugely committed person completed that and today he is a CFO of a company which is a public limited company the main brain behind that company's IPO, and company which has an annual T/O of over a billion usd!

takes me back to a certain someone who was himachal's chief secretary, and guess where did he start his journey, his father was a chaukidar of a government rest house, and all this takes me back to someone who was termed as the people's president, a certain apj abdul kalam!

i am narrating this for a simple reason and that is to highlight, few of the greatest journeys started with the most humble background, and these were people who when they started their journeys would have never been taken seriously by the people at large, so even if someone's business is small today there is nothing to stop that business from becoming largest and so i say, every such person who has made a start no matter how small, commands my respect.

I wonder why our useless government and Navy top brass refused to give the contract for nex gen submarines to these guys. L&T has a proven track record. Maybe they were scared that people will then be encouraged to demand private firms into sarkari areas of dominance and based on some stupid flimsy excuse, refused L&T the contract. What a shame.

When I first heard about L&T, I thought it was a foreign company

The company was founded in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1938 by two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro - both of whom were strongly committed to developing India's engineering talent and enabling it to meet the demands of industry. Beginning with the import of machinery from Europe, L&T rapidly took on engineering and construction assignments of increasing sophistication. Today, the company sets engineering benchmarks in terms of scale and complexity.<<<<<

L&T's signature of excellence is evident on:

India's first indigenous hydrocracker reactor
Oil and gas platform projects executed to global benchmarks
The world's largest continuous catalyst regeneration reactor
The simultaneous execution of clean fuel projects at eight refineries around India
The world's biggest fluid catalytic cracking regenerator
The world's longest product splitter
Asia's highest viaduct - built for the Konkan Railway
The world's longest LPG pipeline
The world's longest cross country conveyor
Building an international class football stadium in 260 days

Heavy Engineering

L&T is acknowledged as one of the top five fabrication companies in the world, with engineering and manufacturing capabilities that are among the most sought after in industry. L&T has also expanded its focus to the Middle East, South East Asia, Russia, CIS, Mauritius, African and SAARC countries. L&T is also developing markets for its construction services in the Indian Ocean rim countries, Africa and Latin America.

Electrical&Electronics

L&T is a major international manufacturer of a wide range of electrical and electronic products and systems. In the electrical segment, the Company is India's largest manufacturer of low tension switchgear, and is rapidly establishing itself in international markets. Its products are widely sold in markets in Europe and Australia. Recently, L&T set up a new manufacturing base for high-end air circuit breakers in China. L&T also manufactures custom-engineered switchboards for industrial sectors like power, refineries, petrochemical, cement, etc. In the electronic segment, L&T offers a wide range of meters and provides complete control and automation systems for diverse industries. In order for that, our government should cooperate with
and not drag feet when it comes to award military contracts.

L&T Shipbuilding earmarks Rs 1,500 cr for Kadipully project

MUMBAI
(PTI): Engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T)'s shipping arm L&T Shipbuilding has earmarked around Rs 1,500 crore to develop around 800 acres of land at Kadipully near Ennore in Chennai
for expanding its vessel building capacity, a top company official said.

The Kadipully project
, to make vessels primarily for defence, would be developed in phases and the first phase will start by mid-2011, the official said on condition of anonymity.

"This would be our second manufacturing facility after Hajira (in Gujarat). We plan to make large vessels in Kadipully which cannot be made in Hajira. The facility will cater mostly to the Indian Navy," he said.

L&T will build 36 interceptor boats for the Indian Coast Guard by FY 13.

L&T has acquired about 1,200 acres of land there, of which 800 acres would be used for shipbuilding activities. It would make vessels of 210 metres length and 46 metres width.

"We plan to do a soft launch by end-this year from Kadipully facility," he said.

On the company's order-book, he said the plan is to deliver eight commercial vessels and 36 interceptor boats for the Indian Coast Guard by FY 13.

Of these eight, one has already been delivered and the second one would be ready by the end of this year.

With no govt deals L&T's defence unit may face loss

MUMBAI: Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which has invested Rs 2,500 crore to manufacture ships for the defence sector in Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu, faces the prospect of loss on its investments in the absence of orders, says a senior executive. The government is placing the order for manufacturing warships to public sector firms and importing submarines from foreign countries.

"If the government does not buy products of our shipyard, we will have to look at options for capacity utilisation of our new facility and also think on deploying manpower at other operations," said senior executive vice-president (heavy engineering) MV Kotwal.

The Kattupalli facility is scheduled to start commercial operations by December this year. The facility, which will have a total investment of Rs 3,000 crore, has 3,500 employees.

The Indian defence sector opened up for private participation in 2001 with the FDI limit capped at 26%, prompting companies like L&T, Tata, Ashok Leyland , Mahindra and Mahindra and Bharat Forge to enter the sector. However, L&T and Tata are among the few, which have developed capabilities to manufacture strategic equipment and acquired standard qualifications.

L&T's heavy engineering division had received licences for manufacturing submarines, warships and some of the strategic equipment in 2002.

It had also supported government agencies in manufacturing India's first indigenous nuclear powered submarine, INS Arihant, in June last year. But it is yet to get any government order for submarine. "It came as a rude shock," said Mr Kotwal. "Our facility at Hazira was evaluated and cleared for this purpose way back in 2001," he added.

Industry bodies - Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - have proposed restructuring the defence procurement policy to encourage greater private sector participation.

"Similar to other sectors, defence sector, too, needs more private participation. It will help the country to bring down expenses," said Vivek Pandit, director for energy and defence at FICCI. According to a latest report released by CII and KPMG, the defence ministry does not provide long-term equipment procurement plans to even big private companies, thereby denying the private players the lead-time to develop the equipment needed in the future.

The Indian defence sector has planned to spend Rs 4,50,000 crore on military equipment in the next 10 years. India imports 70% of its defence requirements, while the remaining is produced by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) or its collaboration entities.

L&T is building Hyderabad Metro. Nice credentials.

It makes so much out of civilian products and services that it can afford to stay away from military. On the other hand, LM doesn't enjoy this to a great extant.

Sir, it is not about affordability. We need to have strong players in the private sector to support the defence industries, as we know the way PSUs has contributed so far. GOI got to support private players for new technology development, speedy production & induction of defence weapons & equipments.
