MOD & CCS is bunch of political jokers rather jugglers. They have even politicized command structure. Why can't we have one Tri-Service Joint Command across the services & Joint Chief of Staff? It is ridiculous the way they are playing with strategic aspect of our security.

No body even quetioning them in parliament for the inaction on Kargil Committee Report !!!

Navy wants its pearl harbour ( Andaman & Nicobar ) at Andaman Sea, Sound nice for now ..

They first start making concrete defense with guns emplacements ( T-72 / T-55 ) Turrets, MG nests and AAA and SAM nest all over the areas ..

In future Indian Navy should also post a third fleet (possibly third aircraft carrier) at Andaman & Nicobar Command.

Actually whenever the third carrier gets inducted, it will be basically used for rotation. A carrier has substantial downtime, so three carriers in service means 2 will be active at any given time, one for eastern fleet and one for western.

India Gives Navy Control of Andaman and Nicobar Command

To shore up its Andaman and Nicobar Command, India has given control of the command to the Navy alone rather than continuing the current practice of rotating control among the Air Force, Army and Navy.

The Indian Ministry of Defence decided that giving control to the Navy would help strengthen the command, a Navy official said.

The command was created to observe Chinese activity in the Indian Ocean and to function as a base for future littoral warfare.

The command is functioning at a low level and includes troops and officers from all three services, the Navy official said.

Russian-made Su-30MKI fighter aircraft have been placed in the command,
and there are plans to increase the number of operational airfields on the island, as well as stationing an unspecified number of submarines.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands comprise 572 islands that lie less than 100 kilometers from the Indonesian coast. A joint command was established there in 2001 to boost India's ability to rapidly deploy troops in the region.

While the command is intended to bolster defenses against China, analysts say, it also will prepare for littoral warfare due to its strategic location. The Andaman and Nicobar islands straddle the strategic seaway leading to the Malacca straits. These islands are near a number of littoral states in the Bay of Bengal and stretching to the Indian Ocean.

The ultimate role of the Andaman and Nicobar Command will be overseeing Indian interests in the Indian Ocean region, said Rahul Bhonsle, retired Indian Army brigadier and defense analyst.

"The role of this command would firstly be essential in providing a sort of springboard to strengthen India's look-east policy. Secondly, to set an example for the viability of creation of future integrated commands. Thirdly, enable India to ensure and enhance the security of the region in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean region."

PORT BLAIR: The international airport here is likely to be equipped with night landing facility within six months with the Andaman and Nicobar administration taking steps to improve infrastructure.

Briefing a delegation of journalists here, lieutenant governor Ajay Kumar Singh said, "Though we have an international airport here, we don't have any international flight landing presently. So, we intend to improve the infrastructure and try to get some of these 96 flights land here. So, night landings in Andaman are possible within six months."

Observing that there were over 96 flights passing over the Andaman Islands, the lieutenant general (retired) said, "We are in the process of expanding the airport infrastructure. We are talking to the civil aviation ministry for another airport. The foundation stone for that will be laid soon."

Currently, few airliners fly to Andamans from the mainland and they do not fly in the nights, as the Veer Savarkar International Airport at Port Blair does not have the necessary infrastructure.

The scenic Island had received over 2,50,000 tourists last year and the administration hoped to increase the number by furthering infrastructure.

Charting out his plan to focus on tourism and infrastructure in the Islands, Singh said the administration was making efforts to set up a government arts and science university and a medical college here for the youth here.

"We have already advertised for an advisor who will put in place the medical university to be functional from 2015. It will function from temporary premises initially and later will be moved to its own land," the LG said.

KOLKATA: The Andamans and Nicobar Command (ANC) should be in control of a complete naval fleet to effectively counter any threat from China, vice admiral P K Chatterjee, commander-in-chief, Andaman and Nicobar (CINCAN), said in Kolkata on Monday. He was in the city as chief guest during the launching ceremony of a Landing Craft Utility (LCU) at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). The LCU is the second in a fleet of eight such vessels being built by GRSE for ANC.

"The ANC was created in 2001. Certain thoughts went into creating this tri-services command and these are enshrined in the policy documents. Apart from the ships that we now possess, we require Command and Control Ships and submarines. In fact, we require an entire fleet. I know that this isn't an easy task. It is important to create infrastructure to support assets. At the same time we must ensure that infrastructure doesn't lie idle. Sufficient infrastructure is required for our existing assets as well as those we host from other commands," Vice Admiral Chatterjee said.

He pointed to the fact that over the last two years, the footprints of 'India's northern adversary' has extended into the Andamans Sea. This has been through the Malacca Strait. The situation will get critical once a canal is built through the Isthmus of Kra.

"There are far too many interested parties and the canal through the Isthmus of Kra will certainly become a reality. Once this happens, the distance from the South China Sea to our territory will be reduced by nearly 1,300 km. The distance of the Andamans and Nicobar Island from the mainland will remain the same though. In this way, our reaction time will be comparatively reduced. I am sure that the Government of India is aware of this issue and taking necessary action. I feel things will happen," the CINCAN said.

The Isthmus of Kra is the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula. It is only 44 km wide and a canal through it in southern Thailand will allow ships to bypass the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. While this canal holds a lot of promise for shipping and trade, it is fraught with danger for countries like India that would hardly get any time for preparations in case of aggressive intentions on the part of China. According to Vice Admiral Chatterjee, creating better infrastructure in the ANC wouldn't add to defence spending.

"Just as there are 'fronts' along land borders, everybody - including the residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands — should consider the ANC a maritime front which needs to remain at a constant state of alert. Defence spending won't increase due to the ANC. It will all depend on how equipment is placed. Existing assets only need to be relocated. If submarines are deployed in the ANC, infrastructure will have to be created. This will take time due to several issues like land acquisition. I would say that we are stronger in the Andamans than we were five years ago. But, we shouldn't rest on our laurels," the CINCAN, who is also the country's senior-most submariner said.

This should have been done 5 years ago. AND should have a naval base that can host 10-12 capital ships and 6-8 subs including Nuke subs.
