The cost of this could exceed the cost of the aircraft, certainly. What do you think?

This gamble won't pay off! Better to use existing sats for recce than using these kinda aircrafts!

Foe the Maoist case even sats would be enough!
Firstly, space based assets are busy in other duties.

Second, physical interception is absolutely possible to gather recce & may provide better results as terrain becomes familiar to the force deployed in situation.

According to Kunal the use of flare pods are to reduce the risk of being shot at. There fore use a recce sat (out in space by India) will be so much cost effective.

The best solution is for the recce is using combat patrols by elite forces!

You don't patrol before you gather Recce. That is why Dantewada massacre took place.

Cost of disengaging sats from their active duty is unaffordable. You don't just need any sat images, you need very high resolution pictorial intel.

If Indian sats are unaffordable Russian sats could be used.
And then who'll compensate active job usually undertaken by Russian spy sats ??

The Patrols are for gather recce.
Patrols need to first confirm the HUMINT received from villagers/locals/informants before sending in troops. If you skip the steps then patrols will be ambushed.

Russia offers the spy sats for money! They've done it in SL in 2008/2009

If you take HUMMINT from villagers and locals it'll take an eternity to eliminate Maoist. Despite the initial cost of lives troops should be use to gather recce. eventually troops'll master the tactics and break the backs o Maoists!

Sats can not replace advantage of physical interception & quality of pictorial intel.

Here the massacre review committee blamed lack of proper HUMINT for mishap.

If foreign sources have an interest, they supply dated photos.

One has to rely on HUMINT from any source and it is then confirmed or rejected. No intelligence is 100% right or timely.

Its defiantly more costly than the platform but its lot cheaper than imported ones, Like you mentioned abt the gilder Ray Sir posted, Flair pods help in Night as well as day for detecting movements..

The entire system is lot cheaper to operate and maintain than a turbine helicopters..
Yet give more or less same result of recon..

Whatever the cost of operating that glider in 6 months x 10 is the amount takes to move the lens a bit up there..

Did you know that ?

Like the Sri Lankan Long Range Recce Patrol.

LRP is something new in SLA CT ops ?

Do they conduct LRP in platoon size or squad size or both ?

Maybe you're right but even the brochure is indicating that this recce pod is optimized for coastal or boarder patrols. How could it be utilized for jungle environments?

Not entirely new. They were created with the Specials Forces as a black ops team.

usually 8 man teams. they were backed with air force so if they rounded up in a trouble choppers can get the team out!

You have to see how Flair pods work, It have a Hi res camera with object tracking software with 10x to 50x zooming and recording, It have thermal also Night Vision camera which work in similar way but thermal seek heat and NV illuminate the terrain, The purpose is for surveillance over any terrain regardless of the environmental, In powerful thermal you can notice heat signature behind tree and wall..
