Great post beautiful prose"Harry Patel" has become the American everyman who speaks the language with an accent that gives voice to a distinguished air, has a fantastic gorgeous wife who is engaging and assured, has above average social skills, enjoys material possessions from cars to shoes, and has an above average vision of how success can be guided by the American dream and an army of kin and friends who loyally follow the plan within the plan that propells their dominance in lodging in less than a generation.
More than other immigrant groups, the Indians in the lodging industry understood the value of capital and real estate. By buying, de-appreciating, selling, painting and repeating the cycle, they have been able to leverage wealth through capital growth, leveraging the tax advantages using the same sets of properties to fuel expanding purchases. Families that manage properties for a number of years are then brought in as owners. After gaining experience in management, trends, and accounting, the capital pool began to acquire individual franchises and more recently whole chains. Simple, the strategy has been an enormous success.
Indians in the industry are both open and closed; they hire locals for the desk and housekeeping jobs, but zealously guard the capital advantages. They are active in politics and celebrate their acquired positions as movers and shakers in their adopted country, which now has two governors of Indian descent.
Other immigrant groups would do well to focus on the capital opportunites and education chances America offers. The Indians are in the forefront of upward mobility because of their unique brand of tradition and progressive opportunities, and concerted, collective action.
