American tanks to roll on Indian soil

For the first time, American tanks will roll on Indian soil in wargames codenamed 'Exercise Yudh Abhyas', which will mark the beginning of the series of military engagements scheduled between the two countries for this year.

For the first time in Indo-US wargames, Americans will deploy their tanks in the company-level Exercise Yudhabhyas scheduled to be held in the Mahajan field firing ranges in Rajasthan desert in March, Army sources told PTI here.

Apart from fielding three tanks, the US will also deploy around 200 men accompanied by armoured personnel carriers for the wargames, they said.

Which tank is being deployed?

Company level will hardly give the realistic feel of the capability.

Maybe they are being fielded so as to show the tank to IA as competition to Russian tanks, which are usually on the agenda when acquiring new tanks.

Let the competition begin!

If these will be USMC tanks then their will be most probably M1A1FEP (Firepower Enhancement Package), their are analogs to US Army/ARNG M1A1SA (Situational Awareness), both have 3rd generation Heavy Armor Package, new FCS, FTL (Far Target Location) system, FBCB2/BFT, TIP, PDB and other goodies.

If these will be US Army tanks, then their will be most certainly M1A2SEP v2 (System Enhancement Package version 2).

PS. There are actually 4 version of M1A1SA to be precise, the original M1A1AIM that is sometimes called M1A1SA v1, the first officialy designated M1A1SA called sometimes SA v2, currently used SA v3 with some upgrades like RTS or Remote Thermal Sight for CWS or Commander Weapon Station. Not fielded yet are SA v4 with CWS replaced with new SCWS or Stabilized Commander Weapon Station.

The photo with the article shows the M1 Abrams. The 200 personnel must include the crews, admin and support. Possibly an armor company less all but three tanks.

Non of currently used Indian tanks have thermals for tank commander, even M1A1SA/M1A1FEP have thermal sight for CWS so commander can use them as their periscope with thermal vision, also CWS is like on T-90S, commander cupola with machine gun controlled from vehicle inside.

M1A2SEP v2 have better FCS with full day/night/low vis hunter killer.

Also American tanks have edge in their electrooptics, especially on desert where there are huge distances, Americans can use 50x zoom in their optics for better target finding and identification, and also higher aiming precision.

Perhaps the Americans want to validate Russian tanks here quite like how the MKI was validated in different exercises. Find out where the Russians were technologically in the late 90s if we bring in the T-90s.

Maybe an exercises to increase interoperability.

More likely the first one.

If India have enough money it could replace all it's tanks with 3800 new builded M1A2's with SEP equipment and electronics package... the only thing India would not get are DU armor and DU M829 series APFSDS ammunition (like are non US users of M1 tanks), but I think that they could negotiate armor package made specially for India + KEW-A1 or KEW-A2 APFSDS ammunition with Tungsten rod.

Last year the largest ever joint exercise with China and Pakistan army was conducted in the same desert on Pakistan side, this is perhaps a diplomatic message shown to China.

Either way this will be an awesome opportunity to compare the Arjun Mk1 with the M1A1, cant wait for that bit to take shape.

It is very unlikely that Arjun Mk1 will be compared to M1A1... no M1A1 is in active service of US Armed Forces, there are only 3 modern variants in active service, these ones I described, and Arjun Mk1 in many aspects is not even close to their capabilities.

Do not know much about joint military exercise, Can some one with thorough knowledge educate rest of us about the roles played by each participating nation's Army? Is the role of C.O. shared one or Indian Officer is to lead USA side and vice versa? Here is one more new weapon which came out of American ingenuity this gun is XM25 currently being tested in Afghanistan, this new gun is the one IA should buy to fight the terrorist in J & K.
