I am not sure but I don't think they call it tuktuk in sri lanka. the news segment is for western/western educated viewers so the use of tuktuk is understandable. bbc for example says tuktuk when doing a program on India although locals don;t use the term.
They do use the term tuk tuk in SL. I think the term has come from Bangkok. The tuk tuks there are different and not like our auto rickshaws.

In SL though Bajaj and TVS autos rule the roost. Tuk tuks. They charge a bloody bomb. A 10km ride starts at SL 500-600!! Luckily we were told by a local to bargain with them. We use to go that distance for SL 250-300!!!
