Kabul, Mar 29 (AP) A helicopter with the international military force crashed today in southern Afghanistan, NATO said.

According to initial reports, no one died in the crash, NATO said. All personnel on board were evacuated to nearby medical facilities.

Jilani Farah, deputy police chief in Zabul province where the crash occurred, said 14 people were injured, including international service members, three Afghan soldiers and one Afghan policeman.

A US Navy aircraft with four crew members on board has crashed into the Arabian Sea, the US Fifth Fleet said. The aircraft was returning from an operation in Afghanistan. It said in a statement that the E-2C Hawkeye jet experienced mechanical malfunctions, forcing the crew to perform a controlled bail-out.

Three of the four crew were later recovered and a search is now under way for the fourth crew member.

An investigation has been launched into the incident. The crew was stationed on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower.

The aircraft had crashed into the sea at about 1400 local time (1000 GMT) on Wednesday, the statement said.

It said the plane "was returning from conducting operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan when the problems had occurred.

The identities of the crew are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

VIDEO: Brazilian air force probes fatal display team crash
By David Kaminski-Morrow

Brazil's air force has started an inquiry after a pilot with the Esquadrilha da Fumaca aerobatic team was killed after his Embraer T-27 aircraft crashed during a display at Lages in the southern Santa Catarina state.
The team had been performing at an event commemorating the 68th anniversary of the Aeroclube de Lages, founded in 1942.
Video images of the moments preceding the crash indicate that the T-27 entered a steep climb, rolling to the left several times, before entering a rapid dive.
Despite achieving a wings-level, horizontal attitude, as shown in other footage, the aircraft failed to recover from the descent before striking the ground and exploding.

The Brazilian Air Force confirms that it has opened an investigation into the accident, which occurred on 2 April at about 17:00. It says the 33-year old pilot had over 3,650 flight hours and had performed more than 180 demonstration flights, making him one of the most experienced team members.
Esquadrilha de Fumaca - which means 'Smoke Squadron', in reference to the team's use of trail-smoke - traces its origins back to the 1950s and the team was formally designated as the air force's aerobatics division in 1963.
Typically the group uses seven T-27s in its aerial displays. To qualify for the squadron, a military pilot must have at least 1,500 flight hours and have undergone at least 800 hours of instruction at the air force's academy.

Pak Army’s training aircraft crashes, pilot dead

A pilot was killed when a training aircraft of the Pakistani army crashed into fields on the outskirts of Peshawar on Thursday, police said.

The aircraft from the army's aviation wing was on a routine training flight when it crashed in the Naguman area, they said.

There were no reports of damage or casualties on the ground.

Police said the crash occurred due to a technical fault.

Local residents said they had seen the aircraft's engine misfiring before it slammed into the fields.

An investigation team from the army inspected the crash site and removed the pilot's body.

notinlove, make sense of this, dawg. Friday is April the 9th, how could they have posted news about a crash supposed to happen on Friday, on Thursday, April 08, 2010? It not just defies logic, it's plain that this is a reporting error. The guy seems to have stumbled on somethin' from last year, not looked at the date, and posted it in a bid to get there first, as happens ever so often in our media.

That crash didn't happen.

This, on the other hand, is real:

U.S. aircraft crashes in Afghanistan, 4 die

KABUL
Fri Apr 9, 2010 2:44am EDT

(Reuters) - A U.S. Air Force Osprey aircraft crashed overnight in Afghanistan, killing three American service members and one civilian employee, the NATO-led international force in the country said on Friday.

The CV-22 Osprey is a hybrid aircraft with giant rotors at the ends of its wings. It takes off and lands like a helicopter and can tilt the rotors to fly like a fixed-wing turbo-prop plane.

The cause of the crash, in southern Zabul province, was not yet known, the international force said in a statement.

The force said the aircraft was carrying U.S. troops at the time of the crash. An undisclosed number of injured people were treated at a nearby base.

There are some 120,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan and that is set to rise to nearly 150,000 by the end of this year as Washington sends in more troops as part of a new strategy to try and quell the mounting violence.

US Navy's trainer aircraft crashes, 3 dead

The US Navy's T-39N Sabreliner trainer aircraft.

The US Navy's T-39N Sabreliner trainer aircraft with four crew members on board crashed here on Monday.

While bodies of three personnel have been recovered, the status of the fourth member is unknown, the Navy said in a statement.

The mishap occurred at 4 pm on Monday when the plane went down near Blue Ridge, Georgia. The trainer jet was assigned to Training Air Wing Six based out of Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

The US Navy had, on March 31, 2010, lost its E-2C Hawkeye aircraft when it crashed in the North Arabian Sea while returning from conducting operations in Afghanistan.

Air Force crash victims named

The wreckage of the Air Force Iroquois helicopter on the side of a hill in Pukerua Bay

The names of the Air Force crew who died this morning after their Iroquois helicopter crashed have been released.

They were Flight Lieutenant Hayden Madsen, Corporal Benjamin Carson and Flying Officer Daniel Gregory.

Two were aged in their twenties and one in his early thirties.

Air Force chief Air Vice Marshal Graham Lintott said at media conference at Ohakea that he has informed the families of the tragedy and they will be flown to Ohakea.

Lintott says it is too early to speculate about the cause of the crash as investigating are continuing.

The helicopter crashed on its way to memorial services in Wellington.

Kapiti-Mana area commander Inspector John Spence said the helicopter went down shortly before 6am into hills near Pukerua Bay about 40km north east of Wellington.

Two other helicopters were flying with the ill-fated Iroquois in a formation of three, before the crash.

"The terrain is very difficult and the conditions with low cloud were difficult," Spence said.

"The Westpac rescue helicopter managed to get into the scene and winch a paramedic down to the scene.

Very sadly three members of the Iroquois crew were found to be dead at the scene. One crewman was alive."

The injured crewman was taken to hospital; Spence understood he had a dislocated knee and chest injuries.

Wellington Hospital confirmed the crewman was in a serious but stable condition.

Spence said the crash site was very difficult to locate in the low cloud.

Police search and rescue had taken control of the scene and were working closely with air force staff to investigate what happened and to identify and remove the bodies of the three crew.

The helicopter "was pretty badly smashed up" and looked to be upside down in a ravine.

Spence said he presumed the three crew were killed instantly; the fourth man had managed to get out of the wreck and was found nearby.

The Defence Force confirmed the helicopter was travelling from Ohakea and heading towards Anzac Day commemorations in Wellington but would not make further comment.

The Air Force says it will be doing a press conference at 2pm.

"Misty" conditions

Pukerua Bay resident Kathy McLauchlan said she could see the crash site from her window.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash were "extremely misty", she said.

"Since the mist has lifted we can see it."

The crash happened quite high on the hills overlooking Pukerua Bay, McLauchlan said.

Condolences

Kiwis spending the night at Gallipoli have been left stunned and Prime Minister John Key, who is in Gallipoli for Anzac Day, expressed his shock and sorrow after hearing about the crash.

"I was informed early this morning of the crash," says Key.

"I am shocked and saddened by this tragic event. My thoughts are with the families of the victims, the family of the injured man, and the entire New Zealand Defence Force.

"To have this happen when the helicopter was heading to Wellington for an Anzac Day flypast is an absolute tragedy.

"I am sure that all New Zealanders will join with me in offering the families of the victims, and the Defence Force, our deepest condolences."

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp and New Zealand's Governor-General Anand Satyanand have both offered their condolences to the families of the deceased crew members.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff also expressed his sorrow at the crash.

"This is a very sad day for New Zealand and the Defence Force," Phil Goff said.

"The Labour Party's thoughts go out to the families and friends of those who died and to the seriously injured person and their family.

Labour Defence spokesman Pete Hodgson said he understood those killed and injured were taking part in ANZAC Day commemorations.

"This is an extremely shocking crash that will impact deeply on our defence force personnel who will have day today been remembering fallen comrades of both the past and the present.

Palmerston North MP Iain Lees-Galloway said the crash will have an enormous impact on the tight-knit Ohakea community.

"I know the community will rally to support those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy," Iain Lees-Galloway said.

New Zealand military chopper crashes, 3 dead

WELLINGTON: Three airmen were killed and a fourth was seriously hurt after a New Zealand military helicopter en route to a military memorial crashed on farmland north of the capital, Wellington, emergency services said on Sunday.

Earlier, three Vietnam-era Iroquois military helicopters failed to appear at a scheduled fly past at a dawn service in the capital to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian troops at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.

Police and ambulance services said they found three dead at the scene on farmland about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Wellington after responding to an emergency call about 6:45 am local time (1845 GMT Saturday).

A fourth person had serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Local resident Kathy McLauchlan, who could see the crash site from her window, said weather conditions at the time of the crash were "extremely misty. Since the mist has lifted, we can see it."

Prime Minister John Key called the crash "an absolute tragedy." "I am shocked and saddened by this tragic event. My thoughts are with the families of the victims, the family of the injured man, and the entire New Zealand Defense Force," he said from Gallipoli, Turkey, where he was taking part in commemorations of the landing by Australian and New Zealand troops on April 25, 1915.

38 IAF planes, copters crash in last 3 years; 28 personnel dead

New Delhi: As many as 38 Indian Air Force planes and helicopters have crashed in different incidents during the last three years killing 28 personnel, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

"A total of 38 accidents involving IAF planes and helicopters have occurred during 2007-08 to 2009-10 and the current year so far. 28 defence personnel lost their lives in these accidents," defence minister AK Antony said in a written reply.

In six of these accidents, civilian property was damaged, he said adding all the mishaps were being probed and remedial measures taken.

To another query, he said 21 Russian-origin MiG aircraft crashed during the same period leaving four pilots dead.

Antony said new aircraft such as the Su-30 MKI, AWACS, indigenous LCA and 126 multi role aircraft were being procured and existing fleet of MiG 29, Antonov-32 and Ilyushin-76 were being upgraded to maintain the strength of the force.

Air show crash: Inquiry points to pilot error

Air show crash: Inquiry points to pilot error

Human error could have caused the crash that killed two navy pilots who were performing aerobatics at an air show in Hyderabad on March 3, navy sources said.

The stunt plane, an indigenously built jet trainer, could not climb out from a steep dive and plowed into a residential building. The navy's inquiry into the crash is complete.

A navy source said, "Signs point to human error. It appears the pilot yanked back on the stick a little more to tighten his turn and increase his bank angle to carry out the 'bomb burst' maneouvre."

The four aircraft, of the navy's Sagar Pawan flight demonstration team, were dispersing to carry out the maneouvre that resembles a "bomb burst".

The source said the Kiran Mk II trainer stalled (lost speed) and went out of control as it was turning to the direction of recovery. "The aircraft was in level flight when it crashed into the building. The pilot was competent, but it seems a split-second decision went wrong."

A navy spokesperson, however, said it was too early to conclude the cause of the crash before the naval headquarters accepted the findings of the inquiry report. "The inquiry report will be processed by Flag Officer Naval Aviation, Goa, before it comes to the naval headquarters, which may accept or reject it. It's too early to say anything," he said.

The crash ended the Sagar Pawan's zero-crash record since it was formed in 2003.

Indian Navy UAV crashes

An Israeli made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Indian Navy crashed at about 7:30 PM today while on a routine mission. The accident occurred just short of the runway, as it was approaching for landing. There are no casualties or injuries. A detailed inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. The incident happened at Kochi.

Indian Navy in January 2006, commissioned its first Unmanned Aerial Reconnaissance Squadron INAS 342 Squadron at its Southern Naval base in Kochi. The Naval UAV squadron comprises six Israel-made medium altitude Heron and high-altitude Searcher MK II UAV's.

Indian navy has not identified the type of UAV that crashed.

UAV on training sortie crash-lands

KOCHI: An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operated by the Indian Navy crashed between Vathuruthy and Katari Bagh short of the runway at INS Garuda at the Southern Naval Command here at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The UAV, the Israel-made Searcher Mark-II, was on a routine training sortie and was approaching the runway for landing when it came down crashing. According to sources, "the crash did not appear to be very serious prima facie" and the damage sustained by the aircraft on the impact of crash is "repairable".

"The UAV has been salvaged," they said. The Navy, it is believed, will approach the IAI - original equipment manufacturer - to do the repairs .

"The accident occurred just short of the runway, as it was approaching for landing. There are no casualties or injuries. A detailed inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident," said a Navy spokesperson here.

The Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 342 'Flying Sentinels', Southern Naval Command-based first UAV squadron of the Navy, operates a dozen Herons and Searcher Mark-IIs built by the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

Although the UAVs were inducted into the Navy in Kochi as early as 2003, a full-fledged squadron was formed only in 2006 after intensive flying trial. It has so far maintained an incident-free record.

The UAVs fly regular tactical missions from INS Garuda and are relied upon for maritime reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition. Equipped with state-of-the-art synthetic aperture radar (SAR), electro-optic (EO) and infrared (IR) sensors, the ground-controlled UAVs are capable of capturing and relaying real-time images of locations and targets to a shore-based control room or a ship, thereby contributing immensely to the navy's maritime domain awareness.

As for the Searcher Mark-II UAV, it has a short-take off and landing; an endurance of about 20 hours covering over a hundred mile area; low-noise to dodge detection and the capability to operate in adverse weather conditions.

The Indian Navy was one of the first to operate the UAVs in the tropical environment.

The Indian Air Force and the Army also operate Searcher UAVs.
