Elbit to supply protection
system for Luftwaffe A400M

Germany's Bundeswehr has selected Elbit Systems' J-MUSIC countermeasure equipment for its ordered Airbus A400M transport fleet. Israel-based Elbit signed a partnership agreement for the aircraft self-protection system with Diehl Defence at Berlin air show on 20 May. Diehl will thus install three of the multi-spectral infrared countermeasures systems on aircraft in question to "ensure complete 360° protection" of the tactical transport, the German manufacturer says. The first system for the Bundeswehr aircraft is to be delivered in 2015.

A400M conducts successful
paratrooping trials

The first paratrooping trials have been successfully conducted by Airbus Defence and Space from the A400M airlifter, the company announced on 14 July. The first series of trials was conducted with troops from the Spanish Army at drop zones in France and Spain. Eleven flights were conducted in the trial programme, culminating in the successful despatch of 20 troops – ten from each of the left and right-hand doors – in a single run at 1,500ft. Freefall jumps from the aircraft ramp were also carried out. The A400M can carry up to 116 fully-equipped paratroopers. Aerodynamic refinements in the aircraft's design reduce air turbulence aft of the ramp in such a way that paratroopers can jump simultaneously through the two dedicated side doors or through the ramp, without them running the risk of colliding with each other because of the air-flow behind the aircraft. This reduces the time to exit the aircraft by half and allows the paratroopers to reach the ground closer together and hence regroup more easily and be operational faster.

Airbus A330 MRTT tanker
aircraft refuels Airbus A400M

First "wet contacts" conducted in latest trials. Airbus Defence and Space has performed the first air-to-air refuelling of the Airbus A400M new generation airlifter from the A330 MRTT Multi Role Transport Tanker. In the course of four flights, by day and night, in southern Spain, the A400M received more than 80 tons of fuel in 100 "wet contacts" from a Royal Air Force Voyager version of the A330 MRTT using the tanker´s Fuselage Refuelling Unit. The trials follow dry contacts conducted in an earlier test-phase and support the A400M´s capability to conduct extremely long-range non-stop deployments. The photo shows the two aircraft framed by the wing of an F-18 chase aircraft.

DGA Delivers Third French A400M

The Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) took delivery of the third production A400M military transport aircraft on July 25, 2014. The aircraft, carrying the manufacturer's serial number MSN10, was transferred on the same day to the French air force, and will fly to Orléans-Bricy air base where it will be operated by the air force. This latest aircraft was certified in mid-May. The state-of-the art A400M produced by Airbus Defence and Space is a tactical transport aircraft having strategic range, and has no competitor on the world market. Powered by four turboprop engines, it was designed to carry up to 37 tonnes of cargo and to fly the full range of missions relating to air transport, including inter- and intra-theater transport, assault landings on unprepared airstrips, air dropping of personnel and supplies, including from very high altitudes, in-flight refueling and medical evacuation. MSN10 is the fourth aircraft delivered of the 170 ordered to date by the program's seven partner nations: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Two have already been delivered to France in 2013, and the first Turkish aircraft was delivered in April 2014.

A400M undergoes tanker test campaign

An air-to-air refuelling test campaign using a Boeing F/A-18 Hornet (pictured) has proven the capability of Airbus Defence and Space's A400M transport aircraft to act as an in-flight refuelling tanker. The A400M performed 33 dry contacts over five flights. The transport also transferred 18.6t of fuel to a Hornet during 35 wet contacts, Airbus adds. The A400M has a basic fuel capacity of 50.8t, and in its standard configuration has refuelling provisions. However, this capacity can be increased using extra cargo hold tanks, so the aircraft can be used as a tanker.

First Airbus A400M airlifter for Malaysia takes shape

The first Airbus A400M new generation airlifter for the Royal Malaysian Air Force is rapidly taking shape at the Airbus Defence and Space final assembly line in Seville, Spain. All the fully equipped major sections including the wing, tailplane, cockpit, fuselage and landing-gear have been joined ready for ground- testing. This aircraft will be delivered in the first quarter of 2015, followed by two more later in the year and the fourth and final aircraft in 2016. The A400M can carry heavy and outsize loads over intercontinental distances at jet-like speeds while retaining true tactical capability to use short and unprepared runways, and can also act as an air-to-air refueller. The first group of Malaysian pilot trainees are already undergoing instruction at the Airbus Defence and Space International Training Centre and will be joined by maintenance engineers and technicians in the coming weeks.

PICTURES: "‹Malaysia recieves first A400M - 3/10/2015 - Flight Global

Malaysia has taken delivery of its first Airbus Military A400M tactical transport aircraft, making it the first country to receive the type beyond the aircraft's launch nations. Aircraft MSN22 was formally handed over to Royal Malaysian Air Force officials at the company's factory in Seville, Spain, according to a statement from Airbus Military. "The A400M will give the RMAF the most advanced heavy transport capability in the region and enable us to undertake an extraordinary range of military and humanitarian operations," says Malaysian air force chief Roslan Bin Saad. Kuala Lumpur is due to receive three additional A400Ms. The aircraft is due to appear at next week's LIMA air show on the resort island of Langkawi. The show's web site indicates that the A400M will appear in the show's flying display.
