If we don't have enemies beyond 10,000 kms then too a 12,000 km range ICBM can be used for power projection.

Immediate threat requires~6000kms
To cover full europe, africa, australia requires~8000kms missle
To cover usa powers we need~14000kms missle
/
so after 8000km, we need leaf frog to 14000. So 8000-12000 is irrelvent in our context.

I doubt the 65-70 tonne part. That is too high for this missile. Yars and Topol-M are both 21-22 m long but weigh 50 tonnes.

the extra weight can also mean better abm countermeasures and bigger payload capability tham topol-m.

Hi, weren't there reports that A5 is MIRV capable. Why is it written in the article that A5 carries only a single warhead?
Yes, there were claims that Agni V could be armed with up to 10 MIRVs, but anyone with brain knew those rumors were nothing but BS.

I think those complaining about the weight of Indian missiles should realise that we will slowly and eventually meet maturity in designing and developing these long range missiles.I hope you all remember that not long ago we only had liquid propelled rockets in our arsenal. Now we have switched over to solid fuel.We can take pride in the fact that the technology is ours. The design is ours.It will take time, but the weights will eventually decrease as the know-how matures. My 2 cents.

DRDO developing missile capable of carrying multiple warheads

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Notwithstanding international reactions and pressures, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is said to be developing the sixth in its series of Agni missiles that would be capable of carrying multiple warheads.

Confirming the development, DRDO chief V K Saraswat said, "India is developing Agni VI missile capable of carrying multiple warheads,"

The DRDO sources also confirmed that apex defence research body will soon begin the developmental trial of Agni-VI missile.

A top scientist from DRDO had earlier said, "We have started working on the multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles version. Agni-VI missiles will carry four or six warheads depending upon their weight."

The government hasn't yet given a green light to the project, although the DRDO has already done all calculations and started working on the engineering part.

Sources claim that the new generation Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-VI will have a strike range of 8,000 km to 10,000 km.

DRDO has also reportedly stated the drawing and designing work of the most advanced missile.

"It will be a three-stage missile and taller than the Agni-V. The design is just taking shape and other sub systems are under development. If everything goes as per the programme, the missile will be ready by mid 2014," said the source.

A senior scientist was quoted as saying that unlike the bulky Agni-III, the new generation Agni-VI missile will be more trendy and sleek, so that it can be easily carried to any place and deployed as and when required.

While the length of the missile would be reportedly around 40 meters as against Agni-V's 17.5 meter, its diameter will be 1.1 meter, which is almost half of Agni-V. The missile's launch weight would be around 55 tonne.

The ICBM Agni-VI is said to be the latest and most advanced version among the Agni series of missiles. It will have the capability to be launched from submarine and from land-based launchers. The DRDO is also working on integrating Agni-V with submarine.

Importantly, the DRDO developed Agni-VI missile will be able to carry more number of warheads than any other versions. While Agni-V can carry up to three nuclear warheads, sources claim that Agni-VI can carry even up to 10 nuclear warheads, capable of hitting multiple targets simultaneously.

Too unwieldy (length more than R-36) to be truly road mobile and not enough diameter to carry more than one RV.

40 meters is too ridiculously long for it to be road or rail mobile, that would make it nearly twice as long as a TOPOL-M and 2.5 times the length of a DF-41, if this baby ever sees the light of day she will not be ROAD mobile or rail mobile(cmon how many railroads in India can she hide on with that obvious a size). this is going to be Silo weapon only which is going to make it the target for any OPFOR first strike.
P.S we all better hope that one of the silos is not next to our house:p

40 meters seems to be a blunder in reporting. What are we making an inter planet missile? Most likely it should be 20 mtrs. We need the same misdile system to one day get onboard our subs. Intercontinental range SLBMs. 40 mtr missile is a joke and the report either has a typo or the reporter is a psycho :D

Yeah if it is 40 meters then its range must be some 18,000 kms, 40 mts must be a typo.

I read 40mts and I remembered the movie "Iron Sky". Might be useful if we need to nuke the Dark Side of the Moon.

Agni VI = 55 Tonnes, 40 mts, Dia - abt 1.1 mts, range = 6000 kms ??????

Using a number of 150 kilotons for each MIRV. A missile with 4-6 warheads would
be able to deliver close to 1/2 -1 megaton over different targets. Or using another
analogy it would deliver destructive power of 30-60 hiroshimas (17 kilotons).

The scene in which they all see mms's ring in the round table when the swastika is shown is hilarious.
