NATO-led forces can still win the war in Afghanistan even if Pakistan fails to move against militant havens on the border, a top US general said on Tuesday.

"That's not a mission stopper in my mind," General David Rodriguez, deputy US commander in Afghanistan, told a Pentagon news conference.

US officials have long pressed Islamabad to crack down on the Haqqani network and other militants based in North Waziristan, saying the insurgents exploit the area as a sanctuary to stage attacks on coalition forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

But Rodriguez said the war effort would not be derailed even if Pakistan never fulfils promises to take action in North Waziristan, saying Islamabad has launched effective operations elsewhere along the northwest border.

"We need them to do more. We're going to encourage them to do more because that makes it easier on what we're doing. But I think it's still doable, without them decreasing what they've been doing, which is significant," he said.

His comments contrasted with more pessimistic assessments from US intelligence agencies and some lawmakers, who have warned that Pakistan's reluctance to combat the Haqqani network in North Waziristan could undermine the war effort.

Pakistan has maintained ties to some militant groups as a hedge against historic rival India and to ensure Islamabad's influence in Afghanistan, diplomats say.

Rodriguez said he expected violence in Afghanistan to increase as usual in the spring as the insurgency launches its annual "seasonal" offensive.

But he predicted the Taliban would change its approach, targeting Afghan officials for assassination while moving away from confrontations with the heavily-armed coalition force.

With President Barack Obama planning to start a withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in July, Rodriguez said it was too early to say how many forces might be pulled out.

Rodriguez leads the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, serving under the overall commander in Afghanistan, US General David Petraeus.

well this is very brave statement . without destroying training camps and godown for terrorists in Pakistan there will always be ample supply of new terrorists coming to Afghanistan. how can you get rid a disease without getting rid the root cause of it ? Best option is to nuke to terrorists safe heaven. Na rahega baans na bajegi bansuri.

That's a pretty strong statement, bhai. Nuking is usually done by Pakistani armchair generals. It is not something prized on our side. Coming back to topic, I think this message is a tacit warning to Pakistan that "either you are going to help us, or we will cut your aid money and you will crumble like a worn out paint". US patience with Pakistanis is still commendable since they are willing to repeatedly give them a chance.

The only tactic to win this war is to start conducting drone raids deep inside FATA.

Check this out. NWFP ad FATA are big areas. Till now US drones have been only skimming the borders that has cause so much damage. US will not hesitate to go aggressively inside for hot pursuit using drones to penetrate as far as say 100km off Peshawar if it has to. They are not like our government and since their mainland is far from nuclear threat, they will strike hard. Now after this statement, do expect extensive drone attacks in NWFP. The attacks that will be used are going to be short, swift and hit and run tactics where each missile strike would take out anything between 20-40 men and then scuttle back to Afghanistan.

This statement simply means, "expect more drone attacks now if you don't do what we tell you to".

I take this as a post made out of frustration or in jest and not seriously.

US just did that. It is going nowhere until Taliban and its backers are on the list of extinct species. They see something much more than we do here in the region. Pakistan is simply delaying its demise by doing this. US won't wait for ever and especially not if another terror attack hits them (hope not for the sake of innocent people).

If even 1 attack happens on US soil whether on islands or mainland, they will enter Pakistan. Simple as that. Pakistan's nukes are no threat to them and they will trample their way through Pakistan both politically and militarily if they have to.

Soviets estimated they needed 300000 troops to seal border and get the job done there, i don't know what Uncle Sam can do now if it has no been able to do since 2001 even with advance tech and an enemy that does not have any state sponsorship i.e something like Operation Cyclone.

Apart from nuclear bomb one I am damn serious about everything. with Pakistani army not ready to cooperate and safe heavens still in Pakistan even nuclear option is somewhat a good option to weed out all of them at once. but yes it will have some long term implications.

It is always an option and will not be at execution part in terms of US policy.. Pakistan is considered as an all time strategic partner of US for it to have an influence in central Asia.. Pakistan being a rogue nation is less concern for US. In fact US is getting stick to Pakistan only because it is not self driven by any means.. neither by its political parties & leaders nor economically..

It is not easy for US to greatly influence India or other Asian countries to counter its threats.. Having Pakistan under their umbrella is easily achievable by generous aids.. Other than Pakistan no other Asian nations will completely align with US. And it is exceptional that US will stand strong against them..

Well, your country is anyway dependent on that blood money to manage its day to day affairs. You should be grateful to them for that.

Afghan war winnable without Pakistan help on border: US

And it took the sole Superpower of the world 10 years to come to this conclusion. When you dig a grave for someone else, always remember that someone else out there is also digging one for you. US gave USSR it's Vietnam in Afghanistan. The same Vietnam is back to haunt the US again.

I for one, will relax and enjoy the moment.
