Armament majors jostle to grab chunks of lucrative Indian arms market

NEW DELHI: With India's appetite for importing military hardware and software remaining unsatiated, global armament giants are once again making a beeline for the country to hawk their fighters, helicopters, submarines, missiles, howitzers and the like.

As many as 380 foreign companies are all set to display their wares during Aero-India 2011 at Bangalore, which kicks off on February 9. "It represents a 25% jump in foreign participation from the last Aero-India in 2009. Moreover, there will be 29 exhibiting countries, 70 visiting countries and eight countries with their own pavilions,'' said a defence ministry official.

There will also be 295 domestic companies, as opposed to 289 in 2009, during the five-day airshow. But, despite India being the 10th largest defence spender in the world, the country is still nowhere near having a robust defence-industrial base.

Consequently, it still imports almost 70% of its military requirements, making it the world's largest arms importer next only to China. If defence deals worth over $50 billion were inked in the decade since the 1999 Kargil conflict, the majority of them with foreign suppliers, it will spend more than double that amount in the current decade.

As per MoD figures, India spent Rs 71,336 crore on capital acquisitions from 1998-1999 to 2003-2004. This more than doubled in the 2004-2005 to 2009-2010 timeframe to register Rs 1,75,937 crore. "We hope to top the Rs 60,000 crore capital outlay in the current fiscal (2010-2011),'' said a senior official.

Is it any wonder then that armament majors continue to be all agog about the immensely lucrative Indian arms bazaar. From Boeing, Airbus Military, BAE Systems and EADS to Israeli Aerospace Industries, Dassault Aviation and Sukhoi Design Bureau, all will be there at the Aero-India show.

There are rich pickings to be made. Boeing, for instance, is salivating at the biggest Indo-US defence deal, the $4.1-billion one for 10 C-17 Globemaster-III strategic airlift aircraft, which is on the verge of being inked. India, as reported earlier, may well order another six C-17s after the first 10. "We will have a C-17 on display in Aero-India,'' said a Boeing official.

There will be at least 22 military and 27 civil aircraft on display at the airshow. It, of course, comes at a time when the winner among the six foreign contenders for the gigantic $10.4 billion project to acquire 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft for IAF will soon be selected.

The armed forces are also looking to induct over 600 helicopters, ranging from VVIP and heavy-lift to attack and light utility ones, a major chunk of them from aboard, in the coming years for well over Rs 20,000 crore. While some deals have already been signed, others are in the pipeline.

A second major induction of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), ranging from micro and mini spy drones to attack and combat ones, as well as surveillance planes is also on the cards. The forces already have over 100 UAVs, mainly acquired from Israel, for surveillance and precision-targeting missions.

So we'll finally, hopefully, know what it looks like, and how different (if at all) it will be. The DRDO's curtain-raiser statement for Aero India 2011 suggests that it will be displaying models of the air force and navy TEJAS Mk.2. There has been little clarity over the real design changes likely to be incorporated in the Mk.2, so to specifically mention the Mk.2 in its list of model displays suggests that there will be something to talk about. Will it have canard foreplanes? We do know that the aft fuselage will undergo changes to house the GE-F414 turbofan, but that's pretty much all we really know. Will update this post over the next few hours with more.

Hadn't thought of using the totally unofficial fan-art image above until now. It was sent to me by someone last year, but I've misplaced their details. So if you recognise your image, please let me know so I can credit you!

Northrop Grumman will showcase ISR capabilities at Aero India 2011

Northrop Grumman Corporation is all set to highlight the industry-leading range of capabilities in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) including airborne early warning and control systems for maritime reconnaissance, fire control radars and unmanned aerial vehicles, at the Aero India 2011 exhibition.

The 8th edition of 'Aero India 2011' will start from February 9-13 at the Air Force Station Yelahanka, Bengaluru. The show is organised by the Indian Ministry of Defence, Defence Exhibition Organisation and managed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

"ISR systems are critical to effective homeland security and our leadership in multiple-domain ISR strongly positions Northrop Grumman to help create solutions for India's coordinated national defence structure," Bill Schaefer, vice president, business development, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems sector, said in a company statement.

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye programme couples a newly designed electronically scanned radar with a matching suite of sensors, avionics, processors, software and display's to provide the most technologically advanced command and control capability available worldwide. The AN/APY-9 radar, with a two-generation leap in capability, is the backbone of this aircraft and provides greater flexibility and significantly improved detection and tracking over all terrains.

The first E-2D to enter the US Navy fleet was delivered in July 2010 and aircrew training is currently underway. An E-2D Advanced Hawkeye crew work-station will be among the exhibits to demonstrate the benefits of the E-2D for military and civil applications. India is among the very first countries for which the Advanced Hawkeye capability has been released.

The company will also highlight the models of the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Unmanned Aircraft System (BAMS UAS), the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) and Fire Scout, vertical unmanned aircraft system (VUAS) multi-role UAV on display.

The MQ-4C BAMS UAS is based on a maritime derivative of the combat-proven RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft with sensors and is a multi-mission maritime ISR system that will provide a continuous on-station presence while conducting open-ocean and littoral surveillance of targets. Construction of the first BAMS UAS aircraft began in September 2010.

Northrop is also developing up to three LEMV long endurance hybrid airship systems for the US Army. This system is designed to be optionally manned, providing the flexibility to operate with or without a crew onboard and sustain altitudes of 20,000 feet for a three-week period, to provide persistent ISR capability. Final testing of the first LEMV is planned for the end of 2011.

The MESA surveillance radar is an advanced airborne surveillance sensor and provides national protection, enabling sophisticated air-to-air and maritime coverage and integrated friend-or-foe identification. It is the first of its type with potential capabilities that have yet to be exploited.

The company's industry-leading Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) programmes will also be featured with a full-scale model of the corporation's AN/APG-80 fire control radar for the F-16IN Super Viper multi-role fighter aircraft. The AN/APG-80 shares common architecture with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's AN/APG-81 radar and is the only AESA fire control radar in India's Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition with operational experience.

Northrop Grumman's STARLite, a small, lightweight wide area surveillance radar used for supporting tactical operations, will be highlighted. STARLite features synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and ground moving target indicator (GMTI) capabilities for unmanned and manned aerial vehicle applications.

The company will also feature Multi Spectral EW simulation products. These products are used for simulating complex EW environments that cover the entire spectrum of conflict from radio frequency to infrared and the Integrated Battle Management System (iBMS) which provides the next generation of command and control and enhanced situational awareness.

Aero India 2011: Homegrown birds to steal the show

Besides the Eurofighter Typhoons and the F16s, two home-grown metal birds— the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Navy— will be seen at the upcoming Aero India 2011, which will be held at the Air Force Station Yelahanka between February 9 and 13.

Both the LCH and the LCA are the latest indigenous efforts to come out from the stables of the state-owned defence laboratories and production units.

Defence sources said that the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited manufactured the LCH, India's first dedicated attack helicopter. The LCH features a narrow fuselage and a tandem seating for the pilot and co-pilot. It undertook its maiden flight on March 29 last year.

Meanwhile, India's first indigenous LCA (Navy) NP1 will also make its debut at the air show. However, unlike the LCH, it will only be a static display at the five-day event.

The NP1, touted as the only carrier-borne aircraft in the light category in the world, was rolled out last year. The first flight of the aircraft is expected to take place by the end of this year.

Along with these two aircraft, the Indian Air Force's latest acquisitions such as the C130-J Super Hercules and the Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) are also likely to make an appearance at Aero India. While the C130-J Super Hercules, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft, the AWACS was acquired from Israel.

No Chinese journalists allowed for Aero-India show.

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Amid its unease over China''s visa policy towards Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, India has ensured that Chinese journalists are not able to cover the upcoming ''Aero-India'' international defence show in Bangalore as accreditations have been denied to them.

The Defence Ministry did not keep any slot for China in the list of countries whose journalists could apply online on its website to make them eligible to cover the event beginning February 9 to 13.

Officials said China, along with Pakistan and Iran, was also not invited to participate in the show.

The issue of Chinese journalists being unable to register for accreditation was raised by a Chinese journalist at a press conference addressed by Secretary (Defence Production) Rajkumar Singh here.

"As far as accreditation is concerned, the list of countries is given by the External Affairs Ministry. We go by their advice on these issues," Singh said in his response.

Asked why China was not invited to participate in the biennial exhibition, Singh said, "China was invited in the last edition of the show but it didn''t come."

He added that "the answer would be better given by the EAM as we go by their advise."

Singh said along with China, Iran and Pakistan were also not sent the invites for attending the show.

On whether the Defence Attaches of these countries in India would be invited to view the show, he said the decision in this regard would be taken by the MEA only.

Officials said the names of China, Pakistan and Iran were not considered by the committee, which selects countries to be invited for the show.

The development comes against the backdrop of continuing row between India and China over the latter''s visa policy under which residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are given stapled visas instead of the proper stamped ones.

The situation took a turn last year when China denied a proper visa to the thenNorthern Army Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal as he was based in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jaswal was intending to travel to Beijing to take part in the Annual Defence Dialogue between the two sides.

India reacted strongly to this and suspended high level defence exchanges but China refuses to relent.

Pakistan blocked from Indian airshow

NEW DELHI: India, which hosts South Asia's biggest airshow next week, has not invited arch-rival Pakistan, China or Iran to the biennial event, organisers said on Tuesday.

"Invitations to the airshow have not been sent to China, Pakistan and Iran but these are decided by the foreign ministry," defence production secretary R.K. Singh told a news conference in New Delhi.

Pakistan and India, who have fought three wars since their 1947 independence from the British, have no military-to-military contacts.

Trade links in recent years have improved between India and China, who fought a brief bloody border war in 1962 but strategic ties are frosty as territorial disputes remain unresolved despite rounds of negotiations.

Singh did not comment on New Delhi's decision to block Iran from the event.

Aero India 2011, which begins on February 9, has invited a delegation from war-torn Afghanistan, Singh said, as part of India's national policy to build better ties with the country.

"We have good cooperation with Afghanistan and so we are delighted it is sending a delegation to the airshow. We want such cooperation to grow," Singh said.

About 350 official and trade delegations from 30 countries including Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Germany and the United States will participate in the five-day event, the organiser said.

AeroIndia show to be the largest ever

India's air show in Bangalore next week will be the largest ever with 29 countries bringing their aerospace products, including fighter jets and transport aircraft, for showcasing at the five-day event. The biennial AeroIndia-2011 will for the first time witness the civil aviation sector overtaking military aviation. The air show will see 54 percent of the aircraft, helicopters and aerospace systems from the civilian sector compared to 46 percent from the military sector.

'This year's air show will surpass all previous figures in terms of participating countries, companies, space and business. All inputs show a healthy growth than the previous edition of AeroIndia. Civil aviation sector at 54 percent will overtake military aviation content at 46 percent in this year's show,' Defence Production Secretary Raj Kumar Singh told reporters here Tuesday.

To be held at the Yelahanka air force station, this year's show has been oversubscribed in terms of exhibition space and the Defence Exhibition Organisation has had to refuse further bookings, he said. There had been a 70 percent growth in gross exhibition area at 75,000 sqmt than last time's 44,000 sqmt, he added.

The number of exhibitors too has grown by 16 percent with 675 firms — 380 foreign — booking space compared to 581 companies in the last edition two years ago.'I am happy that AeroIndia is emerging as a major attraction for global aerospace firms to explore business opportunities and to showcase their products,' Singh said.

The air show would also have 350 official business delegations from countries such as the US, Germany and Italy visiting the event with about 1.75 lakh visitors. Among the countries that will participate are Afghanistan, Israel, the Maldives, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

'It is good that countries like Afghanistan are showing interest in the air show and would be participating. We have good cooperation with the Afghan government and we want it to grow,' he said.

However, India's traditional rivals Pakistan and China would not be present at the show this time as the external affairs ministry had not shortlisted them for sending an invitation.

'China was sent an invite for the last edition, but it did not participate. So, this time no invite was sent. Pakistan and Iran too are not invited,' Singh said, adding that the invitations are sent on the advice of the external affairs ministry.

About 95 aircraft, including 47 foreign planes, would be either on static or flying display at this edition's AeroIndia.

Among the aircraft to fly are contenders for the Indian Air Force (IAF) $10.4-billion tender for 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) such as European consortium EADS' Eurofighter Typhoon, US majors Boeing's F/A-18 and Lockheed Martin's F-16s, Swedish SAAB's Gripen and Dasault's Rafale.

Only the Russian MiG-35, which was in Bangalore two years ago for the show, will be absent in this year's edition. It is the sixth competitor in the fray for the MMRCA race.

The show will witness flying display in the morning and evening on all days and the attraction this time would the Czech Republic's Flying Bulls aerobatic team, which will display its synchronised flying skills on four Zlin 50LX aircraft.

This team will have company from IAF's very own Surya Kirans nine-aircraft team flying their Kiran MkII trainer jets.

India will also fly their indigenously manufactured Light Combat Aircraft that obtained its initial operational clearance on Jan 10 this year, apart from the Advanced Light Helicopter 'Dhruv' that will be flown by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Sarang chopper display team.

The IAF will get its latest acquisition Lockheed Martin-produced C-130J tactical airlifter for India's special forces operations to the air show just two days after inducting it into the force on Saturday at Hindon air base in Ghaziabad near here.

Russian MiG-35 to skip Aero India 2011

The Russian MiG-35, one of the six fighter planes competing with American and European rivals for a $10.2 billion (Rs 45,900 crore) Indian Air Force contract, will not be putting in an appearance at Aero India-2011 in Bangalore next week. Befuddled by the move, the defence ministry is making last-ditch efforts to get the Russians onboard.RK Singh, secretary (defence production), said on Tuesday, "We don't know why the MiG-35 is not coming. We want them to participate and have asked our embassy in Moscow to take up the matter."

Russia, however, is among the 45 official delegations expected. The biennial airshow, to be held from February 9-13, offers international exhibitors a prestigious platform to showcase newest aerospace equipment and technology. More than 675 exhibitors from 60 countries will attend the eighth edition of the airshow, compared to 592 exhibitors from 25 countries in 2009. The exhibitors include 380 Indian firms compared to 303 two years back.

China, Pakistan and Iran have not been invited. Beijing turned down an invite in 2009. Singh said participating countries were short-listed by the ministry of external affairs. Chinese journalists have also been kept out. The US presence will be the biggest with 250 official delegations.

The Russian Aircraft Corporation's MiG-35 is locked in competition with Boeing (F/A-18 Super Hornet), Lockheed Martin (F-16 Super Viper), Eurofighter Typhoon (a consortium of British, German, Spanish and Italian companies), Dassault Aviation (Rafale) and Saab (Gripen) to supply 126 fighter planes to the IAF.

Barring MiG-35, the remaining competitors will be flying at the airshow, organised jointly by the defence ministry and Confederation of Indian Industry.

India and Russia signed a $30 billion (Rs 1,35,000 crore) agreement for the joint design and development of the fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) last December. The two sides are also expected to ink a $4.3 billion (Rs 19,350 crore) deal for 42 more Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters to be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The IAF's newly acquired C-130J Super Hercules airlifters, capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, will debut at the airshow. The IAF signed a $1 billion (Rs 4,500 crore) contract with US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin for six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft in 2008.

The odd-one out at the airshow will be a Maruti 800 flying car, developed by a Bangalore-based aviation entusiast. Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Singapore, Japan and Afghanistan are among the countries sending official delegations. More than 1,75,000 visitors are expected.

Russia's contender for Indian fighter deal to stay grounded at Aero India

05:09 02/02/2011

Russia's MiG-35 will not fly in the Aero India 2011 air show in Bangalore later this month, although its maker MiG maintains it is still a contender in a deal to supply 126 light fighter jets to the Indian air force.

"The aircraft will not fly," a MiG representative in Delhi told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Indian media reports claimed that the Indian air force had made an unofficial decision to delete the MiG-35 and Lockheed Martin F-16IN from the list of contenders. Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, the holding company that includes MiG, denied the aircraft was out of the running.

Six major aircraft makers — Lockheed and Boeing from the United States, Russia's MiG, France's Dassault, Sweden's Saab and Eurofighter, a consortium of British, German, Spanish and Italian companies — are officially in contention to win the $11 billion tender.T

The MiG-35 Fulcrum-F, is an export version of the MiG-29M OVT fighter, is powered by RD-33 OVT thrust vectoring engines. The RD-33 OVT engines provide superior maneuverability and enhance the fighter's performance in close air engagements.

India is expected to make a final choice in the tender in July this year.

Moscow earlier said if MiG-35 wins the tender, Russia is ready to transfer all key technology to India's Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. and provide assistance for the production of the aircraft in the country.

Aero India-2011, which will be held in the southern city of Bangalore on February 9-13, is likely to attract a record number of leading manufacturers, vendors and suppliers from 63 countries.

Attention: If you are planning to attend AERO INDIA in person buy the "Business Pass" ---( you can use your company name / whatever- no big deal)

Link is here https://www.aeroindia.in/BusinessVisitorLandingPage.aspx

and NOT THE 'GENERAL VISITOR' only pass!

The visitor only pass, gets access to only the airshow! while business pass gets you to most all of the show!

Nobody checks to see if you are really there for business , but you get to see more cool stuff up close than the general visitor boring pass!

No Chinese journalists allowed for Aero-India show? That seems a rather odd move, I guess India journalists must have been denied entrance to the Chinese airshow in the past, was that zhouhai air show?
