India to showcase attack copter

BANGALORE: India's first indigenous attack helicopter, the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) developed by HAL and due for induction into the Indian Air Force by 2012-13, will make its first flight during Aero India from February 9 to 13. Its first test flight was in March last year.

The second and third flights were in April and May 2010 and as of now, over 20 test flights have checked various parameters. These have paved the way for testing with weapons.

While the first prototype could fly at the air show, the second prototype, which will be weaponized, is expected to be unveiled too. Two more prototypes are under construction. HAL commenced work on the LCH in 2006.

The copter is an attack variant of the HAL Dhruv, which has been inducted into the armed forces. The copter was designed using a successful and proven helicopter as the base platform. HAL has tentative orders to deliver 65 LCHs to the IAF and over 100 to the Army.

HAL will also showcase the mock-up of the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) which is being developed indigenously and the Multirole Transport Aircraft ( MTA) being done in collaboration with Russia.

Two Chetak helicopters are expected to be handed over to a Third World country. While export orders are nothing to write home about, there have been occasional purchases by other countries. Chile signed a contract with HAL for about seven Dhruv ALHs.

Chopper features

* Powered by HAL/Turbomeca Shakti turboshaft engine

* Has helmet-mounted targeting systems, electronic warfare systems and advanced weapons systems

* Has glass cockpit with multifunction displays, a target acquisition and designation system with laser range-finder and laser designator

* Fitted with data link for network-centric operations facilitating transfer of mission data to other airborne platforms and ground stations

* Two pilots sit one behind the other, compared to side-by-side in the Dhruv

I have this doubt; the LUH is the single engine version of Dhruv, isn't it? Then how come it hasn't taken any flight till now already? I mean to make a new variant out of an existing platform should be easy right, just like the Dhruv gunship?

wasnt it confirmed that meteor wont be available before 2015 then why just a show off
This is a worrying matter you know. For example if Rafale or Typhoon win, I don't know how we could modify Astra into being fitted on it compared to Gripen NG which is totally open ended fighter. Hence I really really hope IAF and most importantly MOD knows what it is doing for once.

Typhoons From Italian AF At Aero India This Year

Two Eurofighters from the Italian Air Force will be flown in for Aero India 2011 next month at the Yelahanka air force base. In 2009, the company sent Luftwaffe Typhoons. With that, the Typhoons of three of its six operators will have brought their jets to the country. In October last year, the Royal Air Force brought Typhoons for a joint exercise at the Kalaikunda air force base in East India.

F-22 and F-16

Yes it is actually going to happen. Lockheed Martin is coming in at aero india 2011 in a big way. There will be an F-22 Flying display along with F-16 probably a block-60 variant. I am not sure whether F-22 will be at static display for general viewing but flying display is gonna be there. It is said that F-22 Cockpit is very much classified hence F-22 being present during static display is not assured.

Bull Shit ,
I won't believe it till it actually happens

I don't get the logic of bringing the F-22 though ,
You bring planes to market them at airshows like Aero India

F-22 exports are forbidden.

What could LM possibly gain by flying the F-22 at India ?
It costs some money to bring the plane all the way here and have it fly.

Are they trying to vicariously market F-16 & F-35 ?
But they could have bought either one to do so

So what rationale could they have to bring the F-22 to India.

Well said! I'm skeptical about this too.

What interests me most tho, is this:

Answer questions and fly an advanced fighter jet
New Delhi: A Swedish defence firm has brought to Indian combat aircraft lovers an opportunity to fly one of the world's most advanced multi-role fighter jet after answering some questions posted on the company's website.

The winner will be flown in SAAB's most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, the Gripen, during the Feb 9-13 Aero India air show in Bangalore.

All a contestant needs to do is simply answer a set of questions or fly any flight simulation of the Gripen at www.gripentopgun.com, a company statement said.
So, all you DFI freaks, get up and hit up the website. Here's where the contest's at: http://gripentopgun.com/

Few months back I had an interaction with one of the officials of LM at their Atlanta Facility and I was told that Indian Navy did inquired for F-35 Naval variant. Bringing an F-22 can be like something displaying a Formula One car by say Honda or Renault at any auto show just to market the company's brand image.

India has already selected FGFA as its heavy class 5G bird, but what US is trying is to market its F-35 by creating a brand image by displaying or flying an F-22 and as we all know Indian Navy was interested in the carrier version of the F-35 and we are not sure when the AMCA is coming maybe after 2025 or later and there is no word on FGFA's carrier version, so to fill in the gaps the Navy will have atleast 3 AC by then so might India be attracted to have an F-35 carrier version later on.

Ok, let me give my take.

Russia came with a 5G bird, then China came with a 5G bird. So LM is pushing the US goverment hard to increase the cap on the Raptor. Or else the LM is showing their technology capability to us by this bird. Also by showing their mightiest bird Yankees think that they can win over the indian hearts. Dont know whats behind the screen, my 2 paisa.

But this Aero India will be absolutely super show Rafale gonna breaks its virginity, EF coming, Gripen on its way, F-35 Cockpit display, Raptor also joining the party. It will be too good.
