Now they are saying metal cutting is on..
And first flight on...2022
No biggie... given that ADA has confirmed that unlike LCA-Tejas MWF (NOT Tejas Mark 2, will get new name) will go straight to IOC program there will not be any Technology Demonstrators (Phase-1) nor any prototype aircraft (Phase-II) of MWF & instead there will be 4 Pre-production aircraft.
1st pair will be of IOC configuration & next 2 of FOC configuration. Direct development of Pre-production aircraft to help reduce development timeline & accelerated flight testing / trial phase so that from the first flight of the first pre-production MWF aircraft till it cleared for production, whole program can be rounded up in 5 years time.

Wind tunnel testing of Medium Weight Fighter (MWF) scale model already has been completed and final design freeze happened last year in December and will finally move to the metal cutting stage by end of this year and already HAL has started the process to procure assembly jigs for the first aircraft.

If metal cutting is in progress then why 2022.
First flight can be in a year... Will it take 3 years to make a plane if metal cutting is already started

Just have a question re. Mk1 & 1A, can LITENING pod be a good substitute for IRST?

2 years is normal we aren't yet down to metal cutting though may be by end of 2019.

Navy Mark-2 vs MCF-Mk2: What’s the difference?
Published April 22, 2019 | By admin
SOURCE: ANANT BHASKAR PANDEY/ FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG

The year 2019 will go down as the most exciting year for the country’s Indigenous fighter jet program, since for the first time, Country showcased two brand new fighters which are under development for Indian Air Force and Indian Navy for the first time shifting focus from Tejas Mk1 and AMCA which have been two fighter programs under production and other under consideration for some years now. ADA showcased a Navy Mark-2 a Carrier based fighter jet and Medium Combat Fighter (MCF) for the Indian Air force.

Both Navy Mark-2 and MCF-Mk2 have emerged as a Fraternal Twins who have differences in appearance but since both were conceived by the same defense laboratory that’s Aeronautical Development Agency and continues to share same DNA of Tejas Mk1 fighter jets when it comes to external similarities, but similarities ends here, because both the programs will cater to different user requirements and will be based on mission specification and operational roles opposite of each other.

Specifications

Design Changes

MCF-Mk2 now features a Canards for handling at low speed along with changes to its weapons and fuel load carrying capacity has improved over Tejas Mk1 design. MCF-Mk2 also has design improvement to its cockpit positioning and will feature redesigned air intakes which will shield engines to improve its radar cross-section (RCS). MCF-Mk2 will also have Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) of 17.5 tonnes.

Navy Mark-2 now gets Increased wing area along with Stabilator as an additional surface for improved mission effectiveness. Navy Mark-2 also features larger air intakes along with bugged under fuselage area along with improved landing gears to sustain carrier takeoff and landings. Navy Mark-2 as Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) of 17 tonnes just shy by 500kgs AF-MCF which now has 17.5 tonnes MTOW.

Weapons and Hard-points

MCF-Mk2 will have re-positioned GSh-23 Gun bay close to its spine on right side behind canards which means it will have 11 hard-points which will allow it to carry weapons payload of 6.5 tons externally. MCF can carry two Close combat Missile ( CCM) on the Wingtip and Two on Pylons, along with 3 BVR Missile along with one Drop tank and One laser designator pod, one smart cruise missile, and one guided drop bomb and one gravity bomb in Mixed Weapons configuration and in Air-Defence Configuration will be able to carry 4 CCM and 4 BVR Missile along with 2 Drop tanks and One laser designator pod.

Navy Mark-2 will sport a simplified undercarriage which will allow it to carry two Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Missiles, in addition to two Close combat Missile in Air-Defence Configuration and two drop tanks and one laser designator pod. Navy Mark-2 will sport only 8 hard-points plus one GSh-23 Gun bay on the right air-intake port. Navy Mark-2 will miss out on Wingtip Pylons but might utilize the use of Dual pylons to shore up its BVR Missile carrying capacity in Mixed Weapons configuration. In Anti-ship Weapons configuration, Navy Mark-2 will carry 3 Anti-ship missiles with two laser bombs, One laser designator pod along with two drop tanks but as seen in aircraft carrier takeoffs can severally hamper an aircraft’s weapons carrying capacity due to environmental factors and each landing is no less than a controlled crash,Navy Mark-2 will always have minimal weapons load of fewer than 5.5 tonnes.

Still it has protruding refueling probe instead of retractable one!?

The two are soon to go their own separate ways. They're already completely different in many ways.

I doubt there's room in there to retract it, the nose is basically the same as Mark 1/A.

Tejas Mk-2 MWF features with IRST capable to track enemy target without using it's radar. Tejas Mk-2 can carry 6.5tons of payload and 3500km of maximum ferry range. With new engine & radar, ew suit, better situation awareness capabilities & other sensor avioncis the aircraft is capable to compete with world class 4.5th gen aircrafts!

5 Years? By adding on the canards, the whole aerodynamics outfit is changed. The whole flying control system need to be re-written, the flying envelope need to be tested thoroughly. 5 years from metal cutting to FOC? Quite optimistic.

I think ADA has already tested the Mark 2 in simulations. The control laws are ready.

Mark 2 has been happening for quite some time now. Its not something that started recently. The Aero India 2019 model was supposedly the finalised design. They need to test the plane in practice though. Now the next step is metal cutting and getting sub systems ready. Uttam and IRST are the biggest new additions, and will likely be the main source of major delays, if any. Metal cutting is apparently going to start by year end for first prototype.

There will be prototypes....but not tech demonstrators.
Each prototype will be coming out at 6 month interval......with fixes/upgrades....

Just an observation, the canards are too close to the pilot view while maneuvering and the cockpit doesnt have good 360* pilot visibility. I prefer the navy MK 2 cockpit, its like the Rafale. It is very important to have this done for the pilots and morale while flying.

The MWF canopy is shaped likea bubble canopy like the latest one from Tejas Mark 1... The canards are placed in a piston where the won't hinder side-rear visibility, unless bent.

Compared to that, Naval Tejas Mark 2...
