it's a one way trip... quite some escort/light Carrier carried these land-based fighters crossing the ocean when it is close enough to the land. these Army/AF/Marine fighters could take off from the carrier and land on the destination airbases and then began the combat there...in WWII it's quite normal for such a transportation missions...even the large fleet carrier did the same job...

USS Enterprise was on her way back after such a mission sending Marine's 21st fighter squadron to Wake Island when the Pearl Harbor was attacked..

British Fleet Carriers also did the same job sending the supplement fighters to Malta Island and suffered a heavy loss by the the German subs...

land based P40/47, Spitfire ,Hurricane ,F4U did take off from the deck...even the B-25 Mitchell...LOL
