7 soldiers missing in Kashmir avalanche

SRINAGAR: The Army says seven soldiers are missing after being hit by an avalanche in the Himalayan heights of disputed territory of Kashmir.

Army spokesman Lt Col JS Brar says five army and two paramilitary soldiers were clearing a road near the de-facto border dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan when a mass of snow and ice tumbled from above early Tuesday.

He says rescuers from Indian Army's High Altitude Warfare School and local border guards are searching for the soldiers.

Frequent rain and heavy snowfall often trigger avalanches and landslides that block roads and cut off mountainous areas in Kashmir.

Inspite of having SASE (Snow & Avalanche Study Estt ) to guide regarding the snow and avalanches and inspite of their warnings of impending avalanches, it is well nigh impossible to avoid these tragedies.

There are cases where a whole post is wiped out by an avalanche.

The Himalayas are a young mountain range and so it is also very unsettled.
