5 dead in Kazakhstan 'terror' attacks on police
Five people were today gunned down in attacks on a police station and a security building in Kazakhstan's largest city Almaty with security forces arresting two men in connection with the assaults.

Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) declared its "anti-terror" operation over in the financial capital after detaining the two suspects.Three police officers and two civilians were shot dead in what President Nursultan Nazarbayev called "a terrorist act".

KNB security chief Vladimir Zhumakanov said one of the suspects may have "connected" with followers of the ultra-conservative Salafi strain of Islam while in jail on theft and weapons charges.

Suspected Islamist militant kills five in Kazakhstan

A lone gunman with Islamist links killed at least three policemen and two civilians in Kazakhstan's financial capital Almaty on Monday, senior security officials said, the second such attack in less than two months.Police detained the attacker, identified as 26-year-old Ruslan Kulikbayev, in a shootout on a busy central street after he had gone on the rampage, attacking a police station and an office belonging to the KNB security service.

Kulikbayev had been imprisoned before for robbery and illegally possessing weapons and had "became close to Salafists" in prison, KNB security service head Vladimir Zhumakanov told a Security Council meeting.Salafists adhere to an ultra-conservative form of Islam.

The shootings will stoke fears of a growing Islamist threat to the oil-producing nation of 18 million people. Last month, men the authorities said were Islamic State sympathisers attacked gun stores and a military facility, killing seven.Thousands of nationals from Central Asian nations are known to be fighting alongside Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, and the authorities have long warned they could return and carry out attacks on home soil.

Kazakhstan finally forced to confront the threat of radical Islam

After series of arrests in the winter followed by additional attacks and plots this spring and summer, Kazakh authorities can no longer deny that Islamic terrorism is a problem in the country.

June attacks: On June 6, radicals linked to the February detainees attacked two gun stores and a military unit in the city of Aktobe in one of the most notable and brazen attacks in Kazakhstan in recent years. According to investigators, the perpetrators had planned to seize arms and continue their attack in the city. However, as a result of a gunfight at the military unit’s headquarters, 12 of the attackers were killed and nine were detained. An unknown number of others remain at large. The events in Aktobe were recognized as a terrorist attack by the Ministry of Interior.

Vladimir Putin was correct. If Russia does not go into Syria and bomb the jihadis from the ex-Soviet republics, they will return and wreck havoc in the post-Soviet space.

On the other hand, it is important to know that Stalin had deported Chechens from Chechnya into the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic as retribution for their collaboration with the Nazis. I wonder what the identity of these attackers is?

@rock127 ji, thanks for tagging me.

:sarcastic:

Anyway, parallel to this in another post-Soviet state there is a hostage situation (ARM, Yerevan)
And apparently "opposition parties'" protests have begun. :)

Both ARM and KAZ are EAU members and pro-Rus.

Knock, knock. Guess who

Should I guess who or should I invite our @spikey360 to do the guessing job? :)

@pmaitra Haha! You know what I say... it's Uncle Sam alright. He's the one knocking on The Bear's door since a long time now. They were in denial since the late 90's the Russians and called the Yanks - partners. But early 2000s and especially 2008 Georgian War showed that old habits die hard and the yanks were once again poking Russia.
I am afraid we are entering the phase of no return. Now things will transpire pretty fast. Notice in what incredibly short amount of time so many events of terrorism, racism, bombing, mowing down, coup attempts are happening.
We are at the cusp of the Third World War. It may break out any time now.

Uncle Sam was also concerned with Russian actions in Chechnya, and then, Boston Marathon happened.

Yeah, indeed. It always interests me how indirect actions of FSB and other intel orgs like that of Germany and France goes almost unnoticed. Contrast this with the high-profile, loudmouth operations of CIA and MOSSAD.

Radical Islamism is now the scapegoat. Under it all find. As Erdogan arrested the pilot of the F-16 which shot down a Russian Su-24 because it was a conspiracy of the rebels. In 2011 when the shooting of workers in the Kazakh city Zhanaozen - Islamism is also to blame? You constantly say stupid things.

It seems having a common sticky thread as Islamic-Terrorism Watch for all such news which are in plenty would be helpful.

I don't know the allegiance of the coup plotters of Turkey. I have made it clear that I don't like Erdogan, but I am not sure who the coup plotters are.
