These RAW officers, one of whom is posted at a senior level in the agency, had shifted their families to the western country much before they themselves disappeared. The disappearance of these three officers took place in the last three months, this newspaper has learnt. Two of the officers were handling two South Asian countries, while the third was handling a large East Asian country.

Are our surveillance agencies so incompetent to miss shifting of families of these officers?

I think US is country to which defection took place
One of the operative was deputed in China matters, other seems it was deputed for Pakistan/Afghanistan.

Search for Rabinder Singh case.

cannot verify this list

Prominent among the defectors’ list are names like:

  • Sikandar Lal Malik, personal assistant of RAW founder
  • Ramnath Kao
  • MS Sehgal disappeared while posted as an attaché in London in 1980.
  • NY Bhaskar was supposed to be negotiating with the CIA. Later, disappeared without a trace in the US.
  • BR Bachhar, senior field officer, disappeared in London.
  • Major RS Soni, an undersecretary in RAW on the Pakistan desk at HQ, is believed to have escaped to Canada in the early '80s.Three months after escape, salary was still being deposited in his account.
  • Shamsher Singh Maharajkumar, an ex-IPS officer posted in Islamabad, Bangkok and Canada. Reportedly settled in Canada after retirement.
  • Ashok Sathe, a former attaché at Ulan Bator in Mongolia and the lone Indian counsellor in Khurramshahr, Iran. Even as his bosses were debating whether he had or had not defected to the CIA, he vanished. He's also suspected of arson
  • R Wadhwa disappeared in London in the early '90s.

Defection only when the agent is about to be caught, if he can hide and supply info, its more valuable to the agency.

They would already have worked as double agents for a loooong time.
US has a way of cultivating the Headly Clan.

The problem with the service is money. They should be paid well. Otherwise defection will take place. These people are assets not soldiers only. You have to enhance the defensive counter intelligence for protecting the assets.

I always vouch for increasing the budget of Intelligence services atleast by 1 billion dollars.

You would not need weapons in future to fight war with enemy but a lot of money to create turbulence inside enemy state.

correct but sometimes defections are intentional too , to gain trust of other intelligence agency so that they start sharing info with the defected operative.

But if the defection has actually taken place then what ever you said is correct preventive measure. This however creates a psychological fear that they could get targeted if defected.
