Twenty-five people were arrested Saturday in Tamil Nadu when they were attempting to burn the Indian flag while protesting the killing of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka, police said.

Eighteen were held in Chennai and seven in Thanjavur, a police spokesperson said.

In Chennai, an attempt was made to set fire to the flag in front of Shastri Bhavan, housing central government offices, the spokesperson said.
This is getting out of hand. What is more important here? Your nation and its honor and interests or terrorists from another country who happen to speak the same language?

this is a preplanned incident by some vested interest to milk the situation to create anti-india feelings. it must be nipped in bud by strict action against those who have done this and those who have abbetted it. I hope the dynasty party does not twiddle around in fear of its allies.

btw, I dont understand why some ppl are trying to drag india into the LTTE mess. did india take the tekha of LTTE? the same LTTE has assasinated rajiv gandhi. india will and must work for welfare of tamils in sri lanka, but why should a terrorist org. like LTTE be supported? why does anybody expect india do so?

It is a big deal Satish. It shows that there are elements in india who would support terrorists over their nation. While this comes as no surprise, we must take strict action to ensure the behavior doesn't spread. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that the Indian government doesn't condone this type of behavior.

That flag is a representation of our national identity. It represents the suffering of an entire generation that died fighting the oppression and tyranny of a colonial power, so that we can live as a free people. It represents the sacrifice of the thousands of brave, selfless Jawans who have given their lifeblood in the name of the motherland, so that the citizens of this nation can sleep soundly every night. It represents the unity of a diverse nation, from the shores of Kanyakumari to the peaks of Siachen Glacier. It represents the hardwork and integrity of every man, woman and child of this land who work tirelessly to make life better for everyone. It represents our soul as a nation.

How can any patriot not take it as a big deal, watching his own countrymen desecrate that sacred symbol?

this is desprate attempt by the LTTE supporters, adding to the fact that in UK and US, LTTE supportes are doing last attempt to save LTTE, this shows that LTTE end is near and this terrorist orginisation will be finised for ever, this is also evident from the fact that they are using civilians as human sheilds.

But what is most surprising is burning of our national flag, what that has to do with LTTE ??? India has always protected the interest of Tamil, not LTTE.

Law will take its own course as far as prosecution of those people who are being arrested for buring Tricolour.

Burning or even attempting to burn the national flag IS a very big deal. It cannot and will not be allowed.
People like Vaino stoking these flames of a false sense of Tamil pride should be tried for anti national activities. What he is trying to do these days might one day bring about a call for separate Tamil Nadu.
He should not be spared. He is a known sypathiser of the LTTE and warned of bloodbath in India if anything happened to Prabhakaran.it is a clear case of supporting a declared terrorist and he should have been in jail by now. It is surprising that he is not already.

See TamilNadu politics is far more mature than anyone here thinks. These guys are more Indian than they are Tamils. I have seen broken noses of NRIs and Sri Lankan Tamils. Well this guy is just a pawn for big players. This is something staged. You must go and check out the guys who were caught in the Police stations. These guys would have at least 6 cases piled upon them.

Any and every issue that burns this country can be linked to vote-bank politics both at national and state level. Its disgusting.

Guys surely this incidence is highly condemnable and disgusting and those who are responssible for burning tricolour should be tried in court but what our govt is doing to protect Tamil people in Sri lanka coz i have heard from media that lot of our Tamil brethern is caught inside the fire zone and Sri lankan army is delibratly ignoring Tamil civilian casualties and even Sri lankans are hesitating to spare the tamil civilians caught between fire???? should'nt we interfere and stop this atrocity on Tamils or just sit and watch the massacre of innocent civilians by sri lankan army and then watch our southern state getting caught in chaos due to spill over effect coz we dont have the guts or will to stop all that and we the great Indians know only how to take advantage of such a situation for cheap political gains by some parties etc etc??? I think we should send some hard message to Sri lanka to not to kill innocent civilians intentionally or by mistake.

IB, I think its better to let the LTTE die its own death rather than interfere now that the war is apparently in its last stages.

If we interfere now and the LTTE grows back, the constant civil war conditions will continue to prevail and cause far more suffering in the long term.

Instead we should ensure that the Sri Lankan government gives equal rights to Tamils and also compensates them in some fitting manner for the injustice and racism that has been suffered by them for the last many decades.

Attempting to burning down our National Flag can not be and should not be tolerated, this is a serious crime, need to be dealt with iron hand.

I agree. LTTE is a terror org, and it has done good to no one including the SLT(sri lankan tamils). LTTE is now on its death bed, and it must be allowed to die along with its notorious leader prabhakaran. wat will be interesting to see is wat would prabhakaran do now? would he take a cyanide like he taught to his followers or would he cowardly try to escape?

anyway, irrespective of the fate of LTTE and prabhakaran, india must make sure that tamils should get justice. we must try to help them and bring pressure on GOSL to do the same.
meanwhile, the cause of tamil eelam must be pursued. the cause is bigger than LTTE and will outlive it and hopefully succeed as well.
