Six Applicant Cities for the 2020 Olympic Games

Poll, added. Also, Doha's probably out of the race

---
Qatar was hoping to add the event to the 2022 World Cup but was denied after a technical report found that shifting the Games from its traditional summer slot to avoid the extremes of temperature risked damaging television revenues.

The decision to drop Doha and Baku leaves the IOC with a weak field of just three cities, all of which face challenges.

Madrid is mired in the Eurozone crisis, Japan is still recovering from earthquakes and Istanbul faces infrastructure challenges and a clash with its ambition to stage Euro 2020 a month before the Olympics.

The decision to cut Doha was taken, the IOC said, for technical reasons, with concerns over climate, capacity, infrastructure and the impact on television schedules all cited as challenges.

The IOC is also known to be nervous about the impact of Doha's huge resources, and those of Baku, turning the campaign into a marketing arms race.

None of the cities. Italy and Spain are a joke. Japan needs to recover and Istanbul, well it still is nowhere as it thinks it is. You know what even the US, UK or other European powers can't considering the times. India is yer to recover from the Commonwealth scam. Beijing anyone?

I vote for Baku, Azerbaijan.

Why Baku?
  • It is a oil rich country flush with funds.
  • It is not a western democracy where progress and construction work can be stymied by litigation.
  • It is also going to take care of disruptive irritants like protests with an iron hand.
  • It can ensure good security, given that it is friendly with Russia and can get the KGB to help its security services.
  • It is located at a place that is neither too hot nor cold.
  • It offers excellent tourist attractions close by, such as the Fire Temple, old fortresses like in Derbent, in neighbouring Dagestan, cruise on the Caspian Sea and a visit to see the Caspian Sea Monster, i.e. the Ekranoplans.
  • Its location is more or less central to most participating countries.
