@OrangeFlorian, I think Ron Paul (Rand's dad) would have been an excellent candidate, but we know how he has been treated by the GOP. It is Trump's brashness and uninhibited verbal, and oftentimes vulgar assault on anyone who opposed him, coupled with his media experience and money, that got him elected.

(CNN) The revelations that Russia actively sought to influence the American election and help Donald Trump become the next president are shocking, mind-blowing and downright scary. But here is something they are not: evidence that the Russians hacked voting machines or changed the Election Day count. Unsubstantiated assertions that Russia actually manipulated the vote tally are themselves dangerous.

But saying that Russia sought to influence the campaign and help Trump's chances is not the same as saying that Russia actually manipulated the voting process.

Here is why that matters: Unless and until we have actual evidence of voting manipulation, it undermines the legitimacy of our electoral system to suggest something was amiss based on sheer speculation. And it could cause politicians to adopt laws in the name of "election integrity" that will actually harm the fundamental right to vote.

Today, was the Presidential Election in the United States, in the sense that today, the electors from all the states cast their ballots for the President. The voters voted on November 8th and the result was that electors were allocated to the competing candidates based on who won each state.

These electors are sometimes bound by their pledge, and sometimes they are unbound, and this depends upon what state they come from. Even if a candidate wins a state, the electors from that state could defect and vote for another candidate, if the laws of their state allows. These electors are called faithless electors.

So, Donald J. Trump is officially the President-elect of the United States of America.

Trump secured 304 electoral votes — two fewer than he earned in November, according to the Associated Press, which tracked results from capitol to capitol. That was despite a pitched effort by some on the left who wrote letters to Trump electors trying to persuade them to switch their votes or not vote at all and keep Trump short of the 270 needed.

Not only did it not happen, but more electors tried to defect from Hillary Clinton Monday than from Trump, by a count of seven to two, as of Monday afternoon. Three Democratic electors in Maine, Minnesota, and Colorado tried to vote for candidates other than Clinton. The electors' votes, however, were disallowed because of state rules binding them to the statewide popular vote winner.
