16 Killed in Karachi Violence

At least 16 people have been killed and dozens others wounded, as ethnic violence rocked Pakistan's financial hub in the last few days and mobs burning some 50 vehicles in the city, which today observed a shut down over the killing of a political worker.

Many parts of Karachi remained closed with transport also thin on the roads after the Pashtun dominated Awami National Party called for a day of mourning after one of their worker's Zainul Abidin was shot dead last evening.

Initially television channels described Zainul Abidins killing as a target killing leading to a lot of tension and fear in the city with incidents of firing and vehicles being torched being reported from many parts of the city.

Channels reported that six people had been killed since the news of Zain's killing broke out.

But on Thursday channels reported a senior police official as saying that the person who was with Zain and wounded had given a statement saying that the ANP worker was killed as a result of personal enmity and shot at a hotel while he sat with friends to sort out the dispute.

But the damage had already been done as most areas of the city remained closed with very thin traffic on the roads while shops remained shut.

The funeral prayers of the slain ANP worker were offered in Lasbela Football Ground amid tightened security which were attended by ANP's provincial minister Amir Nawab, MPA Amanullah Mehsood and ANP leader Bari Kakar and other party members.

Transport remained partially suspended throughout the city as Transport Ittehad had announced not to ply the buses on the roads.
