126 trillion barrels of oil equivalent biomass in Bazhenov Oil shale in Russia

The Bazhenov Formation (Tithonian to Berriasian) occupies about 1 million km 2 in the central part of the West Siberian plate and is buried by 2,000 to 3,000 meters of younger sediments. The aggregate mass of organic matter in the Bazhenov Formation is as high as 18 trillion tons (126 trillion barrels of oil equivalent). It is known as one of the largest oil sources in the world. About 500 samples from 39 oil wells throughout the formation were analyzed; it was shown that Bazhenov rocks contain more U, Mo, V, Cu, Zn, and Ni than average black shales; moreover, the concentrations of these elements increase toward the center of the paleobasin.

There can be 6 to 8 barrels of oil in a ton, depending on density.

This is a follow up on a prior article that detailed the Bazhenov is similar to the Bakken Oil formation in North Dakota but covers 80 times the land

The formation feeds conventional oil fields. Those conventional oilfields have over 144 billion barrels of oil. There have been some wells drilled into the Bazhenov tight oil area and those are producing 400 barrels of oil per day, which is similar to the productivity of Bakken oil wells.

Geopolitical implication

Russia has the potential to develop the Bazhenov Formation to remain and energy superpower for another 100 years.

Russia turns to shale oil | Petroleum Economist

Russian Estimates put the figure at 300 billion barrels of oil that alone is equal to the Saudi entire reserves of oil.

This is pretty huge even if one takes the lower estimate value , discounting the present known reserves and the Arctic reserves on Russian side of arctic.

Funny the Russian were always opposing Fracking on grounds of environmental concerns which is true to some extent but now they are in to Shale taking help from US giant Exon.

So all the dooms and prediction of Oil reserves coming to an end by few decades are not really true , mother earth does have lot of oil in there if some one finds it though it gets more expensive to recover but technology has made even that possible.

It may not be good for Russian economy though they might just choose the easy way out and put dependencies on oil.

The problem with Shale is it would certainly contaminate ground water so countries that depend on ground water for drinking/farming will have hard times getting shale.

They use propietary chemical for Shale extraction and they do not share its composition as its company's secret.

Countries like US and Russia may not face much issue as they do not depend on ground water but in India its a big things.

Russia has no new technology that can get shale out they have expertise more in offshore drilling but not in shale , US leads in it and Exonn has been contracted by Russian to do that for them.

But even in US Shale is banned in government land only private land is being explored and countries like french have banned it all together.

In inhabited areas like Rajasthan or Kutch Region of Gujarat if Shale reserves are found then it is worth exploring.

Need to do a scientific study to get the exact status of Shale Oil and Gas reserves which can be explored.

It seems the prospects for Shale Gas is quite good for india

India to Allow Foreign Bids in Shale Gas Licensing - WSJ.com

Estimates of shale reserves in India vary. The United States Geological Survey has estimated technically recoverable shale reserves of 6.1 trillion cubic feet in three out of 26 sedimentary basins in India. This is around a tenth of the U.S. Energy Information Administration's estimate of 63 trillion cubic feet in four basins. By way of comparison, the EIA has estimated that China has an estimated 1,275 trillion cubic feet of recoverable shale gas reserves, making it the largest repository of shale gas in the world.
