An 11-year-old Christian girl has been arrested in Pakistani capital on a charge of blasphemy after she was accused of burning pages of the Quran, police said today.

Officials of Ramna police station said an FIR had been registered against Rimsha Masih, a resident of Umara Jaffar in Sector G-12 in Islamabad.

The girl was arrested on Friday by personnel from a women's police station after a man named Syed Muhammad Ummad filed a complaint against her.

However, an NGO named 'Christians in Pakistan' reported on its website that the girl has 'Down Syndrome' and had been falsely accused of burning 10 pages of the Quran.

The NGO said other Christians living in Sector G-12 had been "threatened by extremists" who wanted to burn down their village on Friday.

It said some 300 people had left their homes and were in hiding due to the threats.

The All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) is providing assistance to people who have left their homes.

National Harmony Minister Paul Bhatti, who is also chairman of the APMA, has contacted Islamic clerics and police to bring the situation under control.

Rights activists have urged the government to reform or repeal the controversial blasphemy law, which they say is often misused to persecute minorities like Christians.

Federal Minister Paul Bhatti's brother Shahbaz Bhatti, who was the Minister for Minority Affairs, was gunned down by extremists in Islamabad in March last year after he called for the repeal of the blasphemy law.

It also states that the girl suffers from Downs Syndrome.Soon after the incident, residents of the area had gathered to lodge their protest. ISLAMABAD: An 11-eleven-year old Christian girl was accused of blasphemy and arrested for allegedly burning pages of a Noorani Qaida, a booklet used to learn the basics of the Holy Quran.
Officials of the Ramna Police Station told The Express Tribune that the girl, named Rifta Masih, had burned a Noorani Qaida on August 16 and threw it in garbage after putting it in a plastic bag. Masih belonged to the rural area of Mehrabadi, which is next to the G-11 sector in Islamabad.
Soon after the incident, residents of the area had gathered to lodge their protest. The protesters also allegedly beat up the girl and her mother, while the rest of the girl's family managed to escape.
The Kashmir Highway was also blocked by the protesters, but they dispersed after the police lodged an FIR of the case and took Rifta into custody.
The girl has been sent to a juvenile jail on judicial remand.
The news emerged when a website called "Christians in Pakistan" reported the incident. The report alleges that Rifta has Down syndrome and was falsely accused of burning 10 pages of the Holy Quran.

ISLAMABAD: Muslim anger over the alleged incident of a Christian girl with Down's Syndrome burning pages inscribed with verses from the Quran has forced Christians to flee the Mehrabad slum, home to hundreds of Christians and 20 minutes' drive from Western embassies.

Pakistan's president Asif Ali zardari on Monday called on officials to explain the arrest of the girl on blasphemy charges.

There is a growing debate about religious intolerance in Pakistan, where strict anti-blasphemy laws make defaming Islam or desecrating the Quran punishable by death.

Police said the girl, Rimsha, was arrested in a low-income neighbourhood of the capital on last Thursday and remanded in custody for 14 days after furious Muslims demanded she be punished. Police said the girl was in her teens. Activists say she is 11 years old.

Zardari took "serious note" of the arrest and called on the interior ministry to submit a report on the case, state media said. His government has been heavily criticized in the West for refusing to reform the anti-blasphemy law, despite the assassinations of a leading politician and a Christian cabinet minister who spoke out against the law in 2011.

Some reports suggested the girl had been burning papers collected from the rubbish for cooking when someone entered her house and accused the family of burning pages inscribed with verses from Quran.

ISLAMABAD: A cleric who handed over a young Christian girl to police on blasphemy charges after she burned papers containing Quranic verses said Friday what she did was a "conspiracy" to insult Muslims.

Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, the imam of the mosque in the Islamabad suburb of Mehrabad, insisted he had saved the girl, Rimsha, from mob violence by handing her to police but said the incident arose because Muslims had not stopped local Christians' "anti-Islam activities" earlier.

Rimsha was arrested and remanded in custody for a fortnight last Thursday after being accused of burning pages from a children's religious instruction book, which were inscribed with verses from the Muslim holy text.

The youngster reportedly has Down's Syndrome and her treatment has prompted outrage from rights groups and concern from Western governments, but Chishti insisted she was fully aware of what she was doing.

"The girl who burnt the Holy Quran has no mental illness and is a normal girl," Chishti told AFP.

"She did it knowingly, this is a conspiracy and not a mistake. She confessed what she did."

Chishti claimed the local Christian community had previously caused antagonism by playing music in services at their makeshift church during Muslim prayer time and said burning the pages was deliberate.

"They committed this crime to insult us further. This happened because we did not stop their anti-Islam activities before," he said.

"Last Christmas, they played musical instruments and there was vulgarity in the streets during our prayers time. I warned them but they did not stop."


During his sermon at Friday prayers Chishti told worshippers it was "time for Muslims to wake up" and protect the Holy Quran.

Mehrabad is home to around 500 Christian families but many fled after the page-burning, fearing a repeat of a 2009 incident in Gojra, in which young Muslim radicals burned Christian houses, killing seven, after a rumour that a page from the Holy Quran had been desecrated during a wedding.

Chishti said that on the day of the incident he went to Rimsha's home after people showed him the papers she had burned, and he found an angry crowd outside and three or four Muslim women attacking her.

"Some women were beating her and other people were trying to break her arms when I rescued her," he said.

Chishti said the girl confessed to burning the pages and insisted he had averted major violence by handing her over to police.

"People were demanding to burn their house, but I went to police and called them to avoid a major incident," he said.

"I had the Gojra incident in my mind, when Muslims burnt the whole Christians' colony. I did not want to repeat that."

Police have registered a case against more than 150 people for damaging property during the protest after the incident but Chishti insisted nobody from the area was involved.

"I did not invite people to protest against the Christians. The people who protested against the incident were from some other area," he said.

"The cleric who announced on loud speaker was also from another mosque and he did it outside this village. We have no link to that."

Rimsha had been due to appear in court to answer charges on Saturday, but investigating police officer Zabihullah and Rimsha's lawyer Tahir Naveed Chaudhry said the hearing was now expected on August 31.

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani medical board that examined the Christian girl jailed last week under the country's controversial blasphemy law has concluded that she is a minor, her lawyer said on Tuesday.

Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, the lawyer, said the board that investigated Rimsha Mashi's age and mental state determined that she is aged between 13 and 14. The lawyer said he would apply for her bail on Thursday. "I am hopeful she will be released. I also appealed to have the case heard under the juvenile law.''

Rimsha, who reportedly suffers from Down's syndrome , was arrested after a mob accused her of desecrating the Quran near Islamabad . She is being held in a jail amid growing international pressure for her release.

Rimsha's parents had been taken into protective custody following death threats from fanatics and many other Christian families have fled the neighbourhood fearing the wrath of extremists.

Paul Bhatti, Pakistan's minister for national harmony , said more than 600 people have fled from the Christian neighbourhood. There are fears that even if she is released, Rimsha's family will not be safe in Pakistan.

Earlier, leading Muslim clerics from various religious groups had slammed the arrest , saying her case should be a test case for Pakistan and no injustice should be done.
